When the race starts in the Viper and you don't have traction control, how do you avoid wheel-spin? I usually have the rpm's at redline so when it's time to go I just spin until the tires hook up.
I'm a big fan of this type of start. I race with no TC and everyone of my starts is a tire smoking event until it hooks up. Spinning the tires does not seem that much of a disadvantage to me. I don't seem to lose any time or position by a red-line, tire smoking start. In fact, on every Quick Match race I've done, this type of start proves to be the quickest. On many occasion, I've gone from as far back as 6th to 1st on the start. It is so completely satisfying to just drop the brake and smoke'em, I wouldn't switch even if it was quicker to do so.
Do any of you Top 3 guys have a replay of your run? I'd like to see it when this TT is over. I'm 2.5 seconds slower than the #1 spot right now and not understanding where I'm losing that much time.
I was coached this past Saturday to turn on aids as I was five seconds back from the leaders. All my settings have been on the hardest setting since I got the game, from no aids to Professional & Simulation settings along with 900 degrees of steering. I ended up leaving everything as it was, but switching on SRF. Just this one aid gained me three seconds. I think this will be as far as I stray from my purist settings.
Got to give a short review fragment for the Dodge Viper, i have a soft spot for this one. It was featured in one of my earliest GT6 online races, way back in the GTP Community Club Racing Series -- @Baron Blitz Red might remember these too. The last race was a 10 lap constant battle around Indy Road Course, the car felt so good and predictable even with no ABS it was an absolute blast and got me hooked!
The looks are gorgeous and unique, and you can see what this car is up to from first looks. And if you have seen the movie 'The Ninth Gate' you know the Devil drives Viper too, so better have some sympathy...

I have a replay of my fastest lap - I'll try and upload it as soon as I can, but it might be a day or so, sorry. Oh and I'm no longer top 3 I don't think, not since the Alien visitation in the desert

Oh, most definitely I remember those races... along with my running out of gas in the last 400 or so metres in the TS030 race we ran! That one I'll NEVER forget!
I think it's safe to say right now that I do not like the Dodge Viper.
I always thought the old ones looked a little bland, the SRT-10s were only worse. I think their no-nonsense, straight outta 1965 ways regarding safety and technology takes away from the experience. Even in the new Viper with its (mostly) up-to-date technology, I find myself swarming to the Corvette and the Ford GT (and I don't even like the new GT). They're really just not my cup of tea. So, when I heard the news that I'd be stuck with a 2002 Viper for this week, you can imagine my disappointment.
At least the new Viper looks good.
For those who are unfamiliar with the Viper, here is a small rundown on its history. It was introduced in 1992 as a brainchild of then-Chrysler president Bob Lutz (aka the guy most blamed for killing the station wagon in America) and Carroll Shelby. It was pitched as a modern Shelby Cobra: a small, powerful roadster with very little in the way of modernization. The Viper was a hit with most gearheads, but with its Lamborghini-designed V10 producing upwards of 450 horsepower and monstrous amounts of torque, many feared that it was too much to handle.
Now, I was born in the midst of the Viper boom of the mid-90s. I remember having 1/24 scale models of the old RT/10 and GTS-R models. It wasn't until around 10 years ago when the Viper charm started to wane on me. I don't know why, but the idea of it just became cold to me. There was even a time where I despised the Vipers, and that was during the time when Dodge said it would be killed. Then 2013 came and the Viper was rebooted, and the new one still left me cold, even though I will admit it looks really good and I do appreciate its slight modernization. But enough about that.
They're not really that different, you know.
So, I've got an original Viper for the week. This is an idea that mulled in my head as I drove the snake down to the track. I tried to make the best of it. I attempted to look for things that I liked about it. I suppose the twin-bubble top is a pretty nice styling cue. The snake-eye lights are sharp as all hell. The color was nice. Then I got onto the track and all of that faded away...
As soon as you travel anywhere above 100, you start to realize just how old fashioned the Viper is. It's squirrelly around the simplest of corners. It'll slide far enough to make any TVR pack up and go home. It's a menace. No wonder so many people were afraid of this thing.
Any ideal drift fanatic should adore this thing.
I was struggling left and right, one part of my mind on trying to keep the car on the track, the other was to keep my pants from going brown. I was halfway around the track and everything was going okay until tragedy struck.
I don't know how this thing didn't suffer major damage.
Yes, the Viper stuck and the venom got me. It wasn't really anything terribly major, just a light scuff on the wall, and luckily the Viper retained no damage, but still, something needed to be done. I was going to tame this beast if it killed me. So, a few hours of tuning and preparation later, I finally got a modest lap in.
Yes there were still some minor handling glitches. I found it to be a bit understeery at certain times, but my driving style might just have been the cause of that. It was good on the straights, but honestly, what American car isn't? And even though I really wasn't a fan of it all, the good news is that I did get a lap in, with a time of around 3:36. Similar to the Corvette of two weeks ago (you don't know how much I would have rather been driving that Vette).
So, the natural thing for me to do next is to take it into a race and see how it gets on with some idea competition. What better race to put it into than the Tour of America race at Laguna Seca. A competition of various American sports cars from three generations: 80s, 90s, and now. The Viper fit right in.
The Viper gets along with its brothers quite well.
It's successors...not so much.
Even with the understeer and the constant squirrelling, I have to say that all of my arguments against the Viper kind of melted away during this race. As it soared past all these opponents (even the Corvettes, sadly), I couldn't help but smile. It was built for this type of stuff, and visions of me driving an Oreca Viper on the tracks of the late 90s came up everywhere. It was an honest to god blast.
Those CTS-Vs are monsters in the corners. Why don't I ever get to review those?
The Viper managed to pass the pack with no trouble at all, even the CTS-V and 2006 Viper with 100-200 more horsepower. And even with the minor battle damage it picked up along the way, it glided into victory lane with pride. You did well, little Viper, you did well. Okay, maybe little is an overestimation, but still.
The Verdict
Even with the fun I had with the track, the Viper still hasn't won me over. The fact that I had to slave over the thing in order for me to drive it nicely enough to get a proper time is enough to warrant my beater rating for this car. Maybe I'm not skilled enough to charm the snake? Say whatever you want to say, it's just not my thing.
But in all seriousness, it's good to see that ACR tearing up the tracks of America because that lap is one of 13 lap records it holds.
Most notably at @McClarenDesign favorite track Laguna Seca, it outran the times set by both the McLaren P1 and the 918 Spyder.
All 3 cars were driven by the same driver (Randy Pobst) and the P1 and 918 had factory assistance to help set the cars up.
All the laps were verified by the SCCA to show it wasn't a factory special, but a car that customers can buy for themselves with the exact same equipment, most notably the aptly named "Extreme Aero Package" which can give up to 2,000 pounds of downforce.
If we had chosen the older ACR for this week... That would be greatly fitting after this event.
Now that is what I call "going out with a bang and showing the middle finger at the same time", when your car can thrash a lap record without resorting to any "hidden gimmicks" such as custom versions of tire compounds and/or weight reductions you can be proud of your lap time. The greatness of the ACR is that it made the Viper a true track weapon without losing too much of the car's bold character...

Two of the Tuesday COTW races - the first from Spa in the main lobby and the second at the Red Bull Ring when there were only four of us on the grid in the "overflow room" kindly hosted by @Baron Blitz Red. I will have videos up soon of the Daytona Road Course race - the restarted one - and a race at Mount Panorama.
I have to say that despite the restart at Daytona due to excessive contact right at the beginning of the race, the second one was no better as you will see in the race footage. I'll be kind and say that "optimistic" passing attempts (three or four wide on the Daytona infield is definitely that) and some "clumsy" driving saw me take around 9 or 10 hits before the final shunt that put me into the wall and ultimately off track and out of the race - not malicious I'm sure but certainly not what you come to expect from COTW. However, no names, no pack drill as they say.

Awww... sad news indeed. If there ever was a rolling TV icon from my youth, it was the Batmobile. I still have the Dinky toy version of it too. RIP Mr. Barris.
Well, we lost another great name, one which "wrote" several chapters in the "Hot Rod Legends" book with cars that had personality, presence and most important of all, are cultural pieces of history. We wouldn't know what a Batmobile is if Barris had never picked up the derelict Lincoln Futura concept and transformed it into the Batman's most famous ride. RIP, Mr. Barris, your legacy will still roam the wild roads of America, and they will still raise eyebrows wherever they may go...
I haven't done a Review since ages, i was planning to do that since WEEK 91 but i was busy doing other stuff instead. i was going to make a review video on the "Neesan Cell-80" but i was too late since a new car already started and i'm bad at talking on videos (especially since i get nervous a LOT and the fact that English isn't my native language). Also i recently bought NFS 2015 and "Dabelyo Dabelyo Eae Two Kay Sixteen"...sorry i meant that "horrible" WWE 2K16, also planning to buy COD Black Ops III and Fallout 4 and My FAT PS3 is just dying with all these beeps and 3 red light flashings... so why the hell would i go back to Gran Turismo or even to my 2009 old PS3? I just wouldn't...
But Nope, even with Masterpieces like Fallout 4, Metal Gear Soild V...etc.... i didn't leave GT6 yet...So i thought i would do a review in the usual COTW way for the Iconic Dodge Viper or as most people say... DOAGEE VAYIPER...
Now excuse me for a moment so i try to be a bit more...
Sorry but i had to do it
*Ahhehem* alright let's get started...
Ohhh the Dodge (SRT) Viper...when i first think of the word "Dodge Viper" i think of that Famous. Super aggressive. classic 90's. American 2 door Sport (muscle) car. That could tear everything with that V10. When i hear the word Dodge Viper, i think of that 90's 3 spoke rims with tunes that could ether making you love it or literally gets an "Ear Rape"...
When i think of the Dodge Viper, i think of this...
Wait...what's with that Blue w/ white strip and yellow-orange wheels Tuned Viper? Well...i guess you should be already knowing this after seeing the image but for those who didn't...
What... you don't remember that Original Gran Turismo? The one that introduce me to Gran Turismo Series? Man I LOVED THAT CAR back in the day...
okay i know...i know...i was born in 1999 but my first ever GT was GT1 so uhh..just deal with it...
And No... don't tell me why i didn't paint my Stock Viper in Blue because i kept it for the other one...
Alright since i ran out of stuff to really say about, why don't i try the COTW Ti....wait...
Did i just got YLOD for the 3rd time all in one single hour!? Well... 🤬...i'm almost screwed over with my PS3 keeps shutting down with "beep beep beep" then flashing red light...
I guess i couldn't complete this review... my PS3 is almost Dead and i think i might not repair or replace it... so i guess it's time to say good bye to you
i'm gonna miss you PS3 for all the years of fun i had since 2009, it's amazing that you didn't have much of problems apart from my HDD almost running out of space and some fan problems happened back in 2012 ( i guess?)...
Never Thought about your death...i just...just...wish if you could last much longer...
and i guess it's time to say goodbye to you guys for all the fun i had in online races/time trials and just reading this thread in general... i never thought i would say that but i guess since my ps3 is near it's death, i won't be staying that much long here...
Thanks you...
Ah...i guess it's time to just play on his younger brother...

--------------------------------------------------------------
Oddly..i noticed that the PS3 YLOD easily when i go to the Photo Travel... but during online races, which i spent much more time on after i got YLOD 3-4 times, i noticed that it didn't got YLOD. i got more disconnection than YLOD...
So i think i could leave without completing the Review...
Been away for a while so just a quickie. I've always liked the Vipers in Gran Turismo, I'll take one any day over any Vette. Much prefer the Viper's handling and looks.
There's no possible way I can give it a sleeper vote though, it looks like it's designed to go fast, has massive tyres and a huge engine, there's nothing sleeper about that. HP per liter is nothing to shout about, but then you've got enough displacement to make up for it.
Jumped into the TTs for a couple of runs and got 1:20.183 while trying to keep things smooth, binned too many 1:19's to count when pushing it.
Dodge....SRT.....no, wait, Dodge again Viper: The official car of the overly manly man. "Things like traction control, airbags, and build quality are for sissies!" "Corvettes are for girly girls that don't want to die in a fiery crash" "Those burns on my legs from the exhaust pipe running through the door well are true battle scars!"
Overly crude and overly crass, this is what the Viper prided itself on. It was the apex of the Chrysler muscle car philosophy; big engine, go fast in a straight line, job done. This car really ought to have an on/off light switch rather than a foot pedal for it's throttle, the way it handles corners. Keep the foot off the gas and the car will pretty much go in a straight line no matter how hard you turn the steering wheel where you actually want to go. Touch the throttle at all and the rear tires almost immediately break away and try to send you crashing into the inside barrier rather than the outside. The car really does feel like it needs the huge rear wing and front splitter that Dodge straps on to its ACR models whenever they want to set a "street legal" lap record.
Going into this review I began to think about why the Viper has seemingly lost its appeal among the car buying public. For one thing, I think this car didn't evolve enough, trying so stubbornly to stick with the look and formula of the original car while Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and yes, Corvettes were willing to change their lines and features to adjust to what appealed to sports car customers. Chrysler had the chance to make a very new and fresh statement with the relaunch of the Viper a few years ago, but instead, they basically made the same car that had already died off once before. The lesson of that story is that you can't make essentially the same sports car over and over again for several decades...unless you're making the Porsche 911, of course.
Problem two is also something Chrysler can only blame itself for. Put yourself at a red light in your new $120,000 640 horsepower Viper. You will live your life in complete, abject fear. Because one day, ol' Bubba who lives in the double wide three doors down who NEVER mows his grass will pull up next to you in his $50,000 700 horsepower Challenger Hellcat, turn and look you in the eye, and give you the smuggest grin the world has ever seen.
Right, you Beaters settle this amongst yourselves, I'm outta here.
