The Toyota Prius (early style) surprised me the most around the 'ring.' It would be perfect for noobs among the other low powered cars.
The Lotus however is a lightweight animal and requires familiarity with cornering precision. You might start off rather slow in this car, but guaranteed, once you've found the Elan's limits, you'll be astonished!

I am learning the ring as well. In preparation for Mission 34. So to learn the track, I just set out to do s-16. At the moment I got to below silver time. Down to 7.23 ish. The MB 190 seems well balanced. Not too much power, enough to get the job done, and nice enough for a sunday drive. Just my 2 kroner worth.
The Mercedes 190E Touring Car or something like a MR2 or a S2000. Decent handling, enough power etc.
I don't particularly care for production cars, as S3 tires are too slippery. Took out the Supra RZ for a couple of laps. I found myself focusing too much on keeping the car under control than allowing the track to be ingrained into my cerebral cortexR3 tires are a must!
I'd use a Daihatsu Copen. It's low horsepower, and easy to handle, giving to time to learn the track. If it's too slow, use one of the tunes in the Tuning and Setting forum.
