Best place to put food in the car

I drive a FF and I hate it when someone brake hard right in front of me causing the food in "distortion", or when there's time constraints in which I have to drive fast to get to the destination on time, turning fast becomes a big problem. Are there any ways to minimize the force that causes the food to move? What is the best place to put them also?

I used to be a taxi driver, and part of that involved doing deliveries from the local takeout restaurants.

What you need to do is this:
Put all the food into a carrier bag. Then tie the handles of the carrier together. This will ensure that the food does not move within the bag.
Then put this bag into another carrier bag. Place the food into the front footwell, and you should be set for most driving. However, if you're going to be really energetic, put the bag in the nearside rear footwell, then run the front nearside front seatbelt through the handles of the outer carrier bag and into the buckle. This will lock it in place.

Are you serious? Well since driving a FF seems to make a difference, try a MR or a FR. I bet a 4X4 would do the trick.

Eating while you drive is risky. You will sometimes make a mess. There is no way around it. Just be careful.

Thanks Giles, but it seems that I have a more complex scenario -

Even if I put the food (they're in those chinese take-out containers) in a bag within another bag, the inertia from braking/turning will make the food slide or even collapse within the footwell. I found out that food container placements play an major role to minimize this problem. First of all, putting the food in an open box with no space is the best way to go, although huge inertia will make the food 'sqeeze' together which ends in distortion. I haven't tried the seatbelt method yet, so I might try that with the box next week.

Also, how do you guys define 'carefully'? When I drive within time constraints I tend to use 'the line' whenever possible to limit the traction usage. On a 35mph turn I can go 60mph without causing the food to move. I stay at least 3-4 car lengths while driving. Is that careful enough?

How the hell do you follow the correct line while you're driving?? Wouldn't you end up in the wrong side of the traffic when you make a turn? Not to mention you would have to be on the wrong side of the traffic before you even make the turn. :odd:

Oh, try bucket seats for your food. If it works for us, hell, why won't it work for chinese take out? ;)

....................this is the most ridiculous thread I've ever read.

This is the most ridiculous post I've ever read. Hell, I could even go as far as to say you're the most ridiculous member we've ever had.

What we do is put the food on the passenger side floor, under the dash. You can also move the seat all the way up to keep it in place. On our many runs to Popeye's, since we get the 10 wing boxes they are easier to take care of. The only major problem we have is with drinks, which we rarely get out. The 323, MX-6, and RX-7 don't have cup holders. For that we usually stick em next to the seat and the door or find some way to do it.

The best food getter is the MPV...since the shifter is on the steering columb and the parking brake is right next to the seat, there's a perfect area between the front seats where food can go.

Ohh, you can also get some of that rubberized anti-skid stuff used under rugs. Just take a piece of that, take up your passenger floor mat, and put that on there and put the edges under the floor mat into the spikes. We use a small piece between the seats of the MPV for the tissue box so that it doesn't go flying when we drive hard. :)

Get a girlfriend.

Girlfriends are very useful in the car - not only can they hold your food, but they can take the blame when you get lost and balance the car up nicely.

Hah, wieght balance. I don't quite think it would work like that...also if you really needed balancing for cornering and stuff, chances are the girlfriend wouldn't be too happy about going around corners at twice the recommended speed. ;)

They can be used for... other in-car activities too... See, it's win-win... :D

She already left me partly for 'reckless driving'. I can't blame her, she wants to talk while riding and I got distracted easily.

I'm praticing this kind of skill so for my next gf (in far future) I can probably go for a much slower rate, and won't get carsick firsthand.

See its not ridiculous at all, just the main concepts are hidden in some ancient Chinese philosophies

hahaha, true on that... or simply change the foods place and put it in some basket or something like that.

build a custom box, that will fit your plate, and have a lead weight at the bottom, and put it on the passenger seat, should hold it there.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Some still didn't get the purpose of this topic - it is the use of the shortest time to get to the destination without the food spilled out or squeezed. This is my 8th month of food delivery. The first three months cost me a lot of customers because of the driving. Hell, the trunk is the WORST place to put food in. So far I'm improving and the food is in good condition when I reach the destination. There is still something I don't understand about weight shift on a FF car, that's all. Anyway, let's recap:

Giles: Use the seatbelt to lock the food in place.
Mazkid: Best location is to put it under the dash of the passanger's seat.
Driftster: Build a custom box and put it on the passanger seat.
Famine: A new girlfriend...

All of them involve the front passanger seat. Currently I use Mazkid's method. I have no problem driving with one hand as the car is FF, so I can use my hand to hold the soup (it is VERY fragile...). With large orders I use Driftster's method, but under the glove box. I haven't use Giles' method on the passanger's seat yet. Famine's method will only work at night deliveries.

I was thinking of removing the middle box because that's where the center of gravity is. But this concept is getting crazy so I'll stop.

Actually, if there's no-one else in the car, I use the footwell in front of the REAR passenger seats, and push the front passenger seat back a little to provide better grip and anti-topple mechanism. Which I think Giles suggested.

I used to deliver pizzas, so really there was no problem - slap 'em on the passenger seat. :D

Pizza? You wuss, there's no challenge in delivering pizza! :P

There is a little challenge - trying to get orders there on-time without actually driving like a pizza delivery boy. Tricky stuff.

I never exceeded the speed limit, yet regularly beat the tosser with the "Taz" mudflaps on his Nova. Mmmm. Free pizza....
