I often watch street race videos on the net. You know the ones where we se Supra's Mustangs etc, doing highway rolling drag races.

When I am bored, sometimes with a friend we will do roll-on tests, (sad I know) comparing different cars, some standard, some tuned etc, just like you see on the net. Tests are done at different speeds and using differant gears gears etc. It is a great test of engine flexibilty and gearing. Some cars have the perfect balance, while others are not. As an example, a standard Viper, although a huge engine, with huge torque, it is geared way too high, and using a high gear for a slow speed rol on is pointless.

What standard/modded cars do you guys feel are the best for these kind of antics?

Also, along with dyno curves, I would love to see thrust curves in the new GT5, this would allow gearing optimisation to be almost perfect.

apparently the SAAB 93 was the best between two speeds in 5th gear at some point in the semi-recent past (and yes that is a technical term :D)
well, i shall now hang around for someone to tell me i'm wrong ;)

EDIT: wooops, i'm talking real life here :ouch:

Are you guys using TCS or not and are you using nitrous or not??

If not, then the best cars are the ones that don't overpower their tyres, but with that said, even with heaps of power, some of those cars can be made to accelerate very quickly. A lot of it is to do with technique. Cars like the Speed 12 can still accelerate like monsters from 4th gear at take off without NOS so a 5th gear roll would be easy for it. Same with most of the cars in the 400m/1000m ladders.

A good all round car, stock & tuned is the RX7. ;)

I haven't a clue. I do lots of testing, too, although not the kind of testing you're into.

Me too!!!! PD better get at least proper dyno charts back again :grumpy:

Those are not the only test I do! lol I do the usual, compare cars of all kinds on different tracks. I also compare cars on GT with bikes in TT.

As for dyno curves...a far better interpratation of the accelerative capabilities of a vehicle are seen in thrust curves. If you already don't know, thrust curves show thrust measured in pounds (much like a thrust of a jet engine) at any speed range in any gear, giving a far better indication of a veicles performance in a straighline over any dyno curve.

I love it when individuls on forums post dyno curves comparing 2 vehicles, and becuase A happens to have more power then B, the individuals are convinced it must make it faster, tho this is not always the case.

I love doing that myself, and I wished there was a 1/4 mile on TT for that reason, more comparo's between cars & bikes. ;)

Well it's easy to get big #'s and that's why we have dyno competitions all over the world with Supra's showing 1400hp@wheels, but it's a lot harder and more rewarding to have your car correctly setup to put down the power that it's got.

I remember a guy who had an S14 w/190Kw@wheels, and was doing mid 12's. He changed the turbo not realising the effects it would have on his power/torque curves. After the change he was getting 220Kw@wheels on a lower boost, but the turbo wouldn't kick in until 4500rpm, making it useless for quick acceleration off the line, it would either bog or fry the tyres.

THe best kind of power/torque curve is a linear one as I am sure you are aware. Allot of guys that want huge numbers from Supra's and Skylines often actually make there cars slower in most situations. A 1400bhp Skyline with a legal/road/street set up would be beaten in most situations, especially if from slower speeds against a less powerfull car - of course tho once on boost, and where traction is not a problem, then good buy baby!! When Supra's get to silly numbers, there power deliveries are like cliffs, nothing, then everything in the space of 2000rpm. The solution if often hard, as we can gear them higher, but in the lag zone the car will not move, untill it takes off on that monumental wave of boost. I think there is a vid, of a very powerful Supra smoking a Mucielago, it lags, then the boost comes in, it spins in a few gears then goes past the lambo. Very cool.

Turbos are great, but a 600bhp 6 litre engine will always have an advantage over a 600bhp 3.6 litre engine turbo.

I once had a play with a 600bhp Supra, it was a suprise, he came from nowhere, but I shot off in 2nd gear, it was quick, but I edged ahead (not by much) then flew through some S bends. After we stopped to talk. He was just running the car after doing some work, and had a few motor probs, as the car was not reving cleanley at the top - I could tell by the flames out the exhaust!! Was fun.

To answear the initial question of this thread, "what's the best roll-on car?"

Fully built Speed 12 @ 1000+HP with some throttle modulation can't be touched in this 'test' of sorts by any other "street" car

The only thing I think that came close was the Formula PD car, can't remember, it's been a while since I tested the two :scared:

I like a fully built subaru WRX STI wagon. looks very sleeper, and from a 30 roll, it'll break all 4 tires loose in 2nd gear.

its is a lot of fun when you get the awd cars with around 500 hp in GT4
