Best way to break?

Coming from GT5, I used to just slam the brakes with ABS on, without getting any brake locking.

I'm wondering is slamming the brakes in FM4 the most efficient way to break or is it different?

If you want to be faster than average you have to turn off ABS in FM4. And no, slamming on the brakes is not a good idea then. Smoothly brake, while keeping your foot/finger somewhat on the throttle to maintain RPM in the power zone (toe/heel braking), then release throttle, shifting down as needed, turn in and step on it on exit works in most cases for me.

GT5 ABS off is not realistic which is why most people have it set at one, Forzas ABS is very realistic and if you break nice and gently in a straight line you will be fine.

I sort of cheat online... since I play with damage on cosmetic(you sort of have to..), I'll downshift really fast for hard corners while braking, which allows me to quickly slow down without any lockups. I'll go from 6th to 1st in less than a second lol

^ Surely if that was the fastest way then you would see all the people topping the leaderboards using that method?

I use no ABS and keep my finger slightly on the throttle and when I shift down using manual + clutch I give a little more throttle which helps keep the car from spinning out when entering a corner. I also came from GT5 where I was used to slamming the brakes on although I could still drive well with no ABS but the two games are very different.

My method to proper braking:
1) Pick a car and a flat track (Benchmark, for example)
2) Bring up the telemetry screen, go to the tyre grip section
3) Accelerate
4) Brake and keep an eye on the grip indicators. Once the circles around the tyres turn red, you're applying too much brake pressure.
5) Keep practicing until you've got a feel for when the tyres will reach their maximum grip (just before the circle turns red).

This is also quite useful for tuning brake bias. If both the front and the rear tyres' circles are turning red at the very same time, the brake bias is properly set.

Whoever said that was THE fastest way? I for one have no idea how the "top leaderboard" guys do their thing... it just happens to work for me. I'm nowhere near the top, but I've managed to be in the top 1% for every track, and the braking method mentioned above has helped me improve just a bit more since I started doing it.

Well I guess he did ask for the best way to brake which could be taken a few different ways, fastest, most consistent. If that works for you then that's great, I don't think I could do that because I don't usually know what gear I'm in so I'd probably end up shifting into reverse. I didn't mean to say that what you're doing is wrong or anything but I think I just took the question differently.

I read the question and it was really simple. What is the most EFFICIENT way to break?
I have the answer to what is most efficient.
1. Take your controller, scrap that stupid wheel..you don't need brake pedals, shifter, etc
2. Come into the corner at a high rate of speed:
a) then just before the corner(if you want to make it) slam on the brakes, then accelerate out of the corner.
b) wait until you are in the corner then brake hard, hoping all the while you'll make it(of course you won't) then continue turning and enter the corner from the grass or wall.
c) deep in the corner, apply brakes, then it's all in god's hands.
Disclaimer: This is the method I use, as you can see it varies from corner to corner, but it works for me!!! haha

You must not be going very fast! Or you use STM because doing that in any car will make the back end swing round!

If I am really pushing and downshift even 1 gear too much I get massive oversteer!

Nah I dont use any aids... I have all my cars set with 55% brake bias towards the front(not much of a tuner overall). In cars like the mazda furai oversteer is minimal; cars like the f50gt on the other hand, you gotta put some work into it. It works very nicely if you can manage to steer into the corner just in time ;)

Thats what I do when I play GT5 since there is no damage. But in Forza I always race with damage on so I cant do that. You do that in Forza with damage on and you will blow your engine or transmission instantly.

You dont play with damage online do you? You'd be screwed after the first corner, every race.

I use the old skool 360 steering wheel. Sponge under the brake pedal, left foot braking (very gentle), slow in, fast out on corners depending on the car.

d) Plow into outside wall at full speed, letting the curve of the wall turn you. :P

You know, that's what I love about this site. Just when you think you have the perfect driving style, someone will give you a tip that will help you improve.
If I hit the wall at the right angle, I'll not cause too much damage to my car....
And not a lot of time either.....

Gran Turismo taught me that the traction used for braking can't be used for turning and visa versa. That means you want to use slow, steady braking BEFORE the corner, unless you're trying to late brake someone. You then ease into the corner and at the apex, power through the rest of the corner.

^ Which is often reffered to as "slow in, fast out". Generally the best way to approach a corner.

Trail brakign works well when entering corners with a decreasing radius, though.
