Bigger car grids in GT6/more cars in a race

Do you think there should be a bigger car grid in GT6?

I had an interesting conversation with Dan G last year about car count and he stated that more than 16-20 was just a zoo in a game and made it even harder for people to drive clean... Not like real racing, everyone in a game is rabidly aggressive about getting up front and treads the AI like moving apexes... Not sure I agree as a gamer but it did and still does have me wondering.

Only major exception being Nurburgring. Since its a streaming track, technically you could have more cars... But if by chance they are all on screen at once things could fall appart. This is where standard model cars, used as LOD placeholders, could be very useful!

It might actually be easier online since the cars are spread across systems.

If they do bump the limit, I don't want to see it change with tracks unless absolutely necessary. More options for players are better. Console devs need to loosen up, a lot.

That doesn't make sense, every player still has to load the models of all the other cars.

If they could increase the grid, I think they would of done.

Happy with the game quality as-is. NFS games, Burnout, etc have only managed 8 usually. I have hopes for at least a 20-24 cap for Ps4. :)

PS4 should easily be able to take 24 cars indeed, as it's supposed to be 10 times more powerful than the PS3.

Technically, PS2, PSone and all hardwares of history were able to make a 24 cars grid. It's more a choice about developpement strategy than a question of power.

Quite, There are already PS3 games with 24 cars on track but obviously they are weaker in other areas.

Sure, but now we've come to a point where the cars are about as detailed as they can be, which makes room for improvement in other areas, one area of which would be the amount of cars on track.

It's not really a reason. If they have decided to put this amount of details per car, this could mean they refuse to put additionnal cars on the grid in order to save polygones for these kind of details.

What do you mean? The details are already there, as you can see in those images. In order to have 24 cars on the PS1/PS2 as you said, they would've had to take away a lot of the car/track detail.

Ok I thought it was next gen screens !!

But we can imagine they decide to upgrade again the details in GT7 as the number of polygons on cars, details on scenery, more rich engine sound samples and more complex AI, making 24 cars impossible.

Especially if the other racing games on the same generation have excellent graphics, not giving the choice to Podi to take care of graphics rather the number of cars by race.

Again, looking at the screens I posted, you have to agree that the cars are good to go on the PS4. The new renderng engine and lighting in GT6 looks very much like next-gen as well. The tracks could use a few more details, sure. Other than that I just think it's the shadows, water, dirt and particle effects that needs major improvements. So, honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if GT7 will run at a native 1080p and 60fps with 32 cars on track, but 24 is more than enough if you ask me.

I mean, 10 times more powerful than the PS3 is quite impressive. We'll just have to wait and see though.

As long as they aren't displayed all at the same time, it should be possible. This trick would allow more than 16 cars on track and could be useful on big tracks to simulate traffic/ slow cars.

I understand but like I said, if the conccurence of GT made better graphics than Podi on next gen, Kaz must upgrade the graphics of his game and abandon the developpement of a better grid. It will depend of technology context like usual.

How do you prevent that from occurring though, and what happens if it does occur? Are the graphics suddenly becoming worse or does the game go sub 20fps?

This would obviously only be possible if cars were already spread out over the entire circuit. It would not work for most races.

I think it's storing the cars in memory that is the limiting factor, not rendering them - perhaps AI and physics, too. With the adaptive tessellation, it wouldn't matter how many cars there are (to a point) because it'd just dynamically downscale the whole scene if it bogs down. Maybe.

The car models are just the models. The physics for them could be a much bigger deal and that gets spread around to all the consoles
