'Infomercial King' Billy Mays Found Dead in Home
Sunday, June 28, 2009

Print ShareThisDEVELOPING: Television "pitchman" Billy Mays — who built his fame by appearing on commercials and infomercials promoting household products and gadgets — died Sunday.

Mays was found unresponsive by his wife inside his Tampa, Fla., home at 7:45 a.m. on Sunday, according to the Tampa Police Department.

Police said there were no signs of forced entry to Mays' residence and foul play is not suspected. Authorities said an autopsy should be complete by Monday afternoon.

Mays, 50, was well known for his numerous television promotions of such products as Orange Glo and OxiClean. He was also featured on the reality TV show "Pitchmen" on the Discovery Channel, which followed Mays and Anthony Sullivan in their marketing jobs.

Mays was on board a US Airways flight that blew out its front tires as it landed at a Tampa airport on Saturday, MyFOXTampa.com reported.

US Airways spokesman Jim Olson said that none of the 138 passengers and five crew members were injured in the incident, but several passengers reported having bumps and bruises, according to the station.

Authorities have not said whether Mays' death was related to the incident.

"Although Billy lived a public life, we don't anticipate making any public statements over the next couple of days. Our family asks that you respect our privacy during these difficult times," Mays wife, Deborah, said in a statement on Sunday.

Discovery Channel spokeswoman Elizabeth Hillman released a statement Sunday extending sympathy to the Mays family.

"Everyone that knows him was aware of his larger-than-life personality, generosity and warmth," Hillman's statement said. "Billy was a pioneer in his field and helped many people fulfill their dreams. He will be greatly missed as a loyal and compassionate friend."

It was the ShamWow guy in the parlor with the OxiClean.

RIP, Mr. Mays.
Clue reference, if you didn't get it...

This is messed up man. All of my grandma's favorite people are going.

I have a friend that swears he has celebrities die near his birthday (7/1) due to some curse. In the past he has taken blame for Marlon Brando and other notables (he gave me a list, but I can't find it - think it might be in my work email) and this year he is taking blame for four now.

Holy crap, this is even worse than michael jackson dying. Now who will yell at me to buy something.

This is just getting ridiculous now, heard about this earlier today and it's just...stupid. Three people passed in the span of a week, not even, four days.

All of which were 50/50-something.

Three? Try four. Ed McMahon died 2 days before Michael & Farrah.

Not to mention Ed McMahon a week before.:(

Don't forget Davide Carradine. That makes five.

Maybe hair dye is toxic? Can't say I'm going to miss him. I hated every single commercial of his. His show is probably going to be taken off the air which means I don't have to put up with any of his commercials for his show, too.

Am I supposed to feel bad, here?

Just read about this online. They say death comes in 3's, but its becoming mutlitples of 3 lately. RIP Billie, thanks for helping me get those stains out!

I'm gonna miss being yelled at on TV every 2 minutes with him selling a different product.

June 28th should become the official "type in all caps" day, in honor of Billy...

That's true, but David's death was around a week & half before even Ed's, though that doesn't make it any less of a loss.

If it does hopefully the cure will be sold to us by a screaming guy on TV, that is how Billie would want it.

According to the medical report they are saying the death is due to complications from heart disease. It's sad that he had to go, from what I've seen on the show "Pitchmen" Billy seems like a pretty awesome guy to hang around with.

I was thinking the same thing, Joe. Pitchmen really made Billy much more like a nice guy, which makes his death all the more surprising. The weird thing has been seeing his commercials disappear entirely. I guess that means we'll be seeing more of Anthony Sullivan?

Lulz ensue when I imagine him "up there" showing the kids how to "KABOOM IT," or clean things "WITH THE AWESOME POWER OF OXYCLEAN!"

I saw an Oxyclean ad today and thought of this thread, though you can't expect a company to remove or create new advertisements just because the person in the current one is no longer living.
