Do you left-foot or right-foot brake?

It was over a year ago, but I even posted in it! :embarrassed: Well the mind starts to go at my age ... :dopey:

You're right, it was a year.

@ meagainstyou

I'm sure you used to left foot brake in GT5P when not using the clutch. Not even at Fuji?

Another thing is there's using your left foot to cut a small amount of time and then the technique to overlap much closer and press at the same time and ease off the brake.

GT5 demo doesn't seem to require left foot braking.

I was under the impression that most F1 drivers used left-foot braking.

Yep, but at the time MSC started his F1 career, only one or two other drivers where left foot braking( someone correct me please if that's wrong, but I'm sure I heard this often back then). I also remember seeing an interview with Rubens Barichello saying how hard it was to switch to LFB. I guess many young drivers adapted early in their career to this.
Anyways I just mentioned it, because when I heard about MSC left foot braking I realised I was doing the same in GT and other games. BTW I tried this once in real life and I almost crashed lol. So I'd strongly recommend not to try this in a public traffic area. 👍

When I got my DFP for GT4, I just naturally used my left foot for braking. I replaced the DFP with a G25 when GT5Prologue came out, and started using the clutch straight away, and I had to unlearn my LFB technique which took me a few hours to get right. Now I only RFB, regardless of clutch use or not.

LFB is the faster way, well, its easier to correct mistakes when you LFB and have ABS=1, and therefore you can be more consistant, which is still one of my biggest gripes with GT. ABS not only prevents brake lock up it also appears to stabilize the car in an unnatural way. Jabbing the brake in the middle of the corner with half throttle helps settle, balance and control the car, something you can't do if your a right foot braker and/or if you have ABS=0.

Well, it's fascinating how there is every combination of in-game/RL braking set-ups represented here! Makes me think that there's probably someone out there who could, with enough practice, steer with their feet & brake with their hands while standing on their head, & still get decent times! 👍

Those who left-foot brake, do you also do this IRL?

Yes but not always, depending on car (pedal layout) and how I am driving. When I am just driving normally I will just use my right.

Do some people left-foot brake even with a clutch (except when actually pressing the clutch pedal)

This, I switch from left to right a lot depending one the situation, when I was younger I trained (practiced) my left foot to get the sensitivity of my right.

ive tried yes but i dont use it to go faster... im not sure about the reasons to dont use it though... like i said its an habit... im used to drive like that in the game.. ill use left foot in the gtr if i got that chance... :sly: :dopey:

I used left foot braking when I got my DFP, used LFB in GT4, LFS and GTR2.. I haven't had a wheel in years as my DFP broke, I recently got my G27 about 2 weeks ago and now that I've had alot of time behind the wheel of real cars I naturally right foot brake.

I will try experimenting with LFB in the TT demo, hoping to shave a little time off of my laps.. but I am a right foot braker.

Left foot in game and right foot IRL.
I don't know why, but when i first tried with my wheel, i just used the left foot.
Sometimes i try to use the left foot in real life... but i have to say, it's very hard, most of time i break too much, while in the game i can break in the way i want. But sometimes i can do it right in real life too, but when i'm driving with someone in the car i don't do that... looks like i'm doing crazy things because i don't know how to drive ! xD

ive been wondering about this.

its confusing me. i drive a manual car in real life, vauxhall corsa 1.0 litre lol...its not amazing, but its still a manual.

so my left foot is so used to the clutch, and my legs get confused when im using the g25.

i heard left footed braking is better so i tried it, it was very confusing...so i normally do right footed braking, but i want to learn how to do left footed, i might be able to gain a few seconds...

Left foot braking when not using clutch otherwise heel and toe. That goes for sims as IRL. Got quite proficient at left foot braking in the military. We had old cars with manual transmission, but we learnt quickly to shift gears without using the clutch. Some wear on the synchrorings before you got the blipping right on downshifts, but after that it was good fun drifting on snowy forrest roads.

right foot. although, i've been contemplating running trials of my own to determine which is better for me.

Good luck! I didn't find it easy to switch to left foot (in fact, it was kind of irritating) & after a couple of hours, gave up & went back to right foot.

In the simulator, since I do not use gears at the moment, left foot breaking. (advantage of easy breaking and throttle at the same time avoiding weight transfer to the front)
Using gears, which I would like to move too, I want to exercise heel/toe.

I actually tried to move to some left food breaking in real live, fear kicks in though.
The pedals are not handy set up (Audi A3) and the control of strenght is missing, going to slip effects and in real life on public road this quickly was abandoned. So right foot breaking only. Moving to Mercedes C class soon, so will try again.

no problems at all ;) 👍 ah.. i use left foot on karts

what hand you use to shift!? :D right here

football: both foots; tennis left hand; launch balls: left hand; ping-pong: right; writing: right ... just an habit from the beginning nothing else :P

This is bizarre since tennis & ping pong are very similar games & techniques and you use different hands for those...
So you can play tennis & ping pong at the same time - hahaha

Very, very surprised that anyone would use their right foot to brake when in sequential mode. Very surprised.

It's slower. Fact.

So Bruno and Dan, you could be going quicker! Eek.

I cant be arsed to try, im happy as I am :D

In game, left. I find it to be faster, but I suspect the gains are marginal at best compared to the gains from driving correctly. Getting off the accelerator 0.2 of a second earlier makes little difference compared to getting the right lines and speeds through a corner.

In real life, I'll left foot brake in an auto because it means moving my feet less. I won't in a manual because there's really no reason to on the open road. What am I going to do, get to work 30 seconds faster?

Although the correct lines & braking points are the most important, 0.2 of a second, x several corners, can make a huge difference when you're looking at a competition as tight as this.

I use left foot braking mainly to control weight transfer both in SIM and IRL. Usually no big need for left foot braking IRL, but at the moment our roads are covered in ice and snow, and a dab with the left foot is an excellent way to cure understeer. In GT5:TT, in contrast to IRL, you get a "super realistic" stabilising effect when using brake and throttle at the same time.

In Ferrari Challenge the brake bias was a bit back heavy and by using left foot braking you could apply some throttle at the same time and get more braking at the front without locking up the back wheels. Thus dynamically shifting the brake bias forward. This is a much debated technique... The story goes that IRL you will burn your brakes, and that may be a relevant point in some cases but not in all... (A lot of rally drivers use this technique successfully, without burning...) However in a game that doesn't simulate brake wear; and especially in FC where you can't adjust brake bias, I say go for it!
