Breaking In New Cars

My own testing has shown a power increase only when I haven't oil changed a new car, if I oil changed it bumps to it's max power and stays there for roughly 200km's then the power degrades unless I change oil again.

Myth false you never need to break in cars no every one just change oil or even better overhaul motor i noticed some different running properties from a fresh motor

FINAL CONCLUSION: The old system from GT5 of "breaking-in" cars with zero miles is dead. In GT6 you only need to do an Oil Change as soon as you get the car in order to max out it's total engine power.

I have not been able to get a car's power to go up after I do an Oil Change.

Just spent 35 minutes testing more on the c7 stingray. Had 935 to start because I oil changed first. Did 200 miles oil changed went back to 935. Did again went back to 935

I think the break-in feature is broken, not absent. I have had some cars that gained power and others that haven't. I change the oil directly after I buy any car, so that is no factor for me. I don't mind the break in as it was a little surprise when I went back in the garage and my car has more power:)

I'm assuming you all have tire wear on correct? In GT5 tire wear needed to be on when racing online to break a car in. In GT5 in practice mode it didn't matter if you had tire wear on or not. I guess practice mode is gone in GT6. The car still got broken in. It was also slightly more than 186 miles to fully break in a car.

Side note: Why do we need to figure this crap out for ourselves? Shouldn't this all be in a manual somewhere since it is the same for all cars?

I bought a NASCAR and changed the oil, it has 892hp. That is the same hp a broken in Nascar has in GT5, so I would conclude engine break in no longer exists.

Well, obviously more testing is needed, and under some sort of controlled conditions. I did a lot of testing like this in GT5 Version 1.00 - but it helped to have the B-Spec AI to do the drudge work of running the cars. In GT5 they would break in my cars, and make money for me, too.

I've not checked the Online Manual yet, but I doubt they would talk about an increase in HP via break in, or oil-change. These things are usually in the form of 'easter eggs' that we would have to discover ourselves hit or miss. Part of the interest factor, I guess.

I would love to help out with the testing . . . but for now, without B-Spec . . . I can't spend time running in cars . . . I'm trying to figure out how to get NASA to part with the Rover.

You don't even have to do the oil change right away. I drove 7 or 8 races with the honda fit and tried to change oil. Hey presto, HP went up by about 10 or 12

I had added a new ECU as well earlier.

This is good news! I'm hoping I don't need to mess with a 2nd account to dupe cars.

Yea it's going to go up with an oil change regardless. Now go by a fit & do a oil change with no races. I'll bet it's the ssme hp. Guys I'm telling you I've tested & done both methods....

yes done this method. Been playing this game since the first series I know all the tricks of previous titles

Could breaking-in have been recently patched out? Because I swear my '04 ITR had to be broken in, but like everyone is saying, I haven't seen any other changes in horsepower since I've purchased other cars. @_@

I bought the R8 LMS ultra last night and tried running it in the Schwarzwald league races. Due to the PP being over the 640 required, I dropped the power limiter down to suit.

Ran 1 race (3 laps at Cape Ring) and it increased to 641pp due to horsepower increase.

I am, however, still playing on version 1.0 as my broadband has been down for 2 weeks. This could be the reason why people are getting different results

You didn't say anything about an oil change. If that wasn't done first, the increase from that isn't put in yet, so the power will increase from simply driving it anyway.

That's where your seeing your increase from. Do your oil change & then go buy same car & do oil change right away & I bet it's same HP

Right, bought another R8 ultra, oil change and taken it into the same race for 3 laps (6 miles) and got the same thing! Increased by 1pp.

As mentioned before, I am on version 1.0 of the game so maybe the update takes this away or could it be the fact that I'm limiting the horsepower to make the car suitable for the lower spec events cause it?

I will add some interesting info that I have found that may clear things up-

1) SOME (not all) cars hp/PP are different between v1.0 and v1.01 of the game- maybe these cars that had lower pp/hp in V1.0 would experience a break-in, haven't tested it yet although Tallulah Belle's post seems to point to these cars having a break-in increase which would make sense. I've seen several examples of different PP/Hp between the 2 versions of GT6, as an example check out the Acura integra Type R- starts at 190hp in v1.0 vs. 197hp in v1.01 (coincidentally that difference is the normal 3% break-in increase that GT5 had.

2) I think some of you are confused about how the oil works, everything I've experienced in GT6 shows it to be the same as GT5. To summarize, when you change the oil the oil state stars out in a "bonus phase" a 5% increase from normal power, that phase is finished by 189 miles (300km), then it is in a "nuetral phase" for 5000km (no power increase in this phase), then after 500km the oil light comes on and power starts to degrade as you drive more. The oil "state" is completely independent of the mileage the car has when you change it (however the engine overhaul state may be altering hp at the same time depending on car mileage, but that doesn't start till after 5000km)

I would say you may want to read this thread that fully explains it for GT5, it also talks about engine overhaul (which does an automatic oil change in addition to the overhaul): https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/threads/engine-break-in-wear-overhaul-and-oil-change.182613/

3) As some mention there could be differences in running online vs offline for engine wear. In GT5, if you ran online with tire wear off, the car mileage would increase but no engine wear would happen (they get out of sync which was really annoying). All offline driving in GT5 caused engine wear and mileage increase.

4)As most probably know, you can not go by the hp figures listed for a car in the dealership, they will generally not match what the car starts at if you buy it. However, the PP numbers listed for a car in the dealership seem to match what you get after you purchase a car.

So when talking about whether you are seeing a change with break-in it would be good to list if its online with or without tire wear, or offline, and what version of the game you bought the car in, maybe also what version you ran during your break-in test.
