British Touring Car Championship Game and Esport Series Confirmed, Scheduled for 2022

Actually, i play a lot of retro games lately. But these are mostly shooters and action games like Doom 93. Racing games and sports game are a different kind of beast IMO, i prefer the added realism of new titles over the retro appeal. Stuff like Outrun might be an exception.

You’d probably like the Virtua Racing remaster on Switch.

Very interesting information - thanks for sharing. It does beg the question, would a BTCC game be a new IP for Codies, given their past history of BTCC games. There must be a huge temptation to call it TOCA 3, or at least use the TOCA element.

If Codemasters is going to call it BTCC The Game, it probably counts as new IP. I'm not too sure does bringing back the TOCA name matters much, I don't think the average joe will recognise it these days.

I guess it depends on the meaning of new. It would certainly be new to the current lineup, even if they called it TOCA. But yeah, BTCC 2021 would be a much fresher sound as a new IP.

Or its leaning towards being Milestone. Disnt they do the Superstars V8 game? Italian focussed V8 touring car series. Theyre certainly not a stranger to national racing series. Wikipedia even lists Codemasters as one of the publishers for this game?

I played the original game on SEGA Mega Drive. That was one of my first racing games. I got this game for passing elementry school, quite the story, eh? I think the remastered version looks nice.

Codemasters has an unannounced project of a new IP that will be used by Unreal Engine 4- https://codemasters.csod.com/ux/ats/careersite/2/home/requisition/157?c=codemasters

Milestone plans to release a new IP in Summer 2021 based on the information revealed after its acquisition by THQ Nordic.

That list is insanely packed. My original sentiment still remains - if Milestone is making this I'm not going to expect good quality. I'd say you need at least 2 years these days to make a decent game from scratch. Granted most of the bike games are yearly copy-paste so the workload is less, but to also work on another new game alongside them... I don't think Milestone has the capacity for that.

We'll see what happens 👍

Someone asked Alan Gow about having a new BTCC game on the V8 Sleuth podcast - he said that they were in the final stages of negotiations for a new game that would be released in 18-24 months but didn't provide any other info. I think it was recorded at the start of May.

Indeed, that was Milestone. A great game with solid sim-lite physics. Challenging to be fast yet accessible, similar to Assetto Corsa Competizione today but without the deep sim elements. A small but unique track list. Small but unique car roster. Unique unknown racing series. I had a blast playing online. I even won a copy of GT5 from an online SSV8 competition based on lap times pulled from live races. The first ever eSports competition one might say.

It would be cool to see a BTCC game from Milestone, although I think a dark horse (and something I would be very happy to see) is an official ERC game. SLRE was a diamond in the rough; a superb rally sim-lite with incredible stages and an awesome car list overshadowed by lack of polish, crappy graphics and horrible sound. It's time Milestone moves back to four wheels and an ERC game would be a welcome and unique title in the rally genre.

What a nice thought @Pfei

It has to be simple, not the typical introduction scenes we are used to with Codemasters.
  • Gorgeous to look at
  • original to the BTCC series
  • Hardcore sim
  • A modern TOCA

something like assetto corsa competizione but with BTCC would be awesome.

Disagree.

Couple reasons, firstly it needs to sell. Hardcore sims don't sell in good enough numbers to justify making a hardcore sim of a national series that has limited appeal outside of the UK. The original TOCAS got a really good balance of difficulty and fun and thats what they need to aim for again. If itngoes hardcore sim and sells like crap, it probably won't see a sequel.

A good compromise would be a fundamentally accessible game with added hardcore features, perhaps a hit like the F1 series or even Dirt Rally.

Good graphics should be a given, depends on the developer. Quite simply it needs to appeal to a wide range of players, have enough modes and variable details (weather etc) to keep it replayable, good online and ideally feature all the support series to beef out the content.

Making a game "accessible" doesn't guarantee good sales as well. Just look at the last 3 GRID games. IMO racing games are always niche, and a game based off only a single series is even more niche. Might as well make as best game as possible, and take whatever sales it brings. It'll probably flop either way, but at least those who appreciate it will have a good game and possibly a cult classic for years to come.

Besides, modern racing cars on slicks really aren't difficult to drive. With a difficulty slider, driver aids and some extra assistance like auto brake/steer it should be possible for even a complete novice to complete a lap without spinning. I've said this before in another thread but I played rFactor for a year with keyboard arrow keys, TCS and ABS, and it's no harder than playing GRID with a controller. In fact it's easier because the physics and car movements make sense.

Last Grid sold poorly through heavily publicised lack of content and average reviews, Grid Autosport launched on the previous gen consoles at a time where the Xbox One and PS4 had already established and Grid 1 and 2 sold and reviewed well.

A game that can be accessible will sell better than an outright hard sim. Grid will still sell better than ACC, because ACC has extremely limited appeal regardless of the views of Grid.

It has to strike a balance in the same way the F1 games do. Look at thenlikes of Gran Turismo, Forza Motorsport, F1, clearly the best selling racing games across the genre because they strike that perfect balance people crave. I'm not saying it shouldn't be a sim, but it has to balance all of the elements so that it appeals to the whole core BTCC fanbase, not just 10% of it, first and foremost.

Its been too long since the last official BTCC game for someone to completely miss the opportunity now to establish a really solid platform. Get good sales, get a good reputation, get some cash in and start building deeper foundations from there.

I agree it shouldn't go full hardcore route like ACC, but my point is if you pitch this game too far in the arcade spectrum it will be detrimental to sales as well. A good balance as you said is key. Putting aside F1 games (they will sell anyway because they're the only official licensed F1 game) and GT/FM (the only mass market sim with huge car list/sandbox experience) for a second, I believe PCARS1/2 sold more than the last few GRID games, and that was aiming at a more realistic market. Pitching this somewhere between those 2 games would be perfect IMO.

You can sell a hardcore sim nowadays. To make it accessible they can add a lot of driving aids and the possibility to choose amateur or expert.

BTCC as a hardcore sim will sell better than an arcade game or even a simcade. People are already complaining that pCars 3 is not going to be sim enough.

I think that a hardcore sim with accessibility for people that are less interested in the hardcore part will sell very good nowadays.
