Also, for gaming, Dual Core isn't much use. It's really only good for running multiple applications at the same time (i.e: Firefox, Photoshop, CAD, etc. all at the same time).

He's going to have this for a while, so might as well make it as futureproof as possible. Since dual core processors are more available now(basically a standard), game makers will probably take advantage of that.

Even AMD's FX62 is dual core.

That 6200 graphics card is a waste of money. If you don't play games then just go with the on board graphics processor. If you do play games, then you could get a 256 Mb 7600GT (that's what I'm using) for about $100 more and it's several times more powerful. I can play Quake 4, FEAR, Oblivion and other new games and they look great on it.

And if possible, I'd go for a lot bigger than a 80Gb hard drive.

edit: also, is that motherboard dual channel RAM compatible? If it is then you should be getting 2 sticks of 512Mb, not a single stick of 1Gb. If it's not dual channel compatible then ditch it and get one that is.

Or you could just finish reading the rest of my post before you start recommending parts.

And is a great chip sans the $800 pricetag :D.

To bad it blows compared to the new Core 2 Duo. The 200 dollar one blows it out of the water.

Ebiggs, if you're doing to dish out 175 bucks for a p4, you might as well just get an intel Core 2.

Huh? You specifically asked for "Any suggestions of different parts".

What's wrong with the changes I recommended?

But if you plan to watch HD-DVD's and Blu-Ray movies on it in the future, then upgrade the following:

*Graphics Card, something like 512MB DX10 when they come out and come down in price.

*CPU would be better upgraded to a Core 2 Duo.

*2GB of DDR2 Ram, because 2GB can help out in a lot of modem games.

And if you're willing to go for a bigger Hard Drive, and want good speed then get 2 of the same Hard Drives, and put them in Raid 0.

Alright, time for another update, I'll also add these to the first post.

Apevia X-Cruiser case - $69.00

Intel Pentium D Dual-Core (3.2Ghz and very overclockable) - $208.99

Leadtek Geforce 7900GT (out of stock right now, but will be in by the 14th, not that I'll have the money by then  ) - $289.99

ASUS P5LD2 Deluxe Socket T (LGA 775) Intel 945P ATX Intel Motherboard - $149.99

Please recommend fan(s), power supply, and maybe some better RAM (about $100 for the RAM please). My current RAM option was this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820231036

Intel Pent D dual core??? Garbage. You'll be running a furnace. Get the Intel Core 2 Duo E6400. 2.13GHz and a lot better and runs cooler than the ghetto Pent D. You'd need a new motherboard also, but you should be able to find a Core2 Duo compatible mobo with Intel. Everything else looks ok to me.

Indeed

Here you go (also very overclockable):

I'm not really sure about the motherboards, but if I think the Intel here might work if you don't have much money left.

Otherwise if it's too much, go back to AMD.

This is the fan I used for my case:
Not exactly quiet, but if you aren't concerned about silence, it does the job.

How much do you want to spend on the power supply?

Did you drop the floppy drive? Cause for 20 dollars you can get a 512 meg thumb drive that'll be faster and better all around :P

And AMD has been dropping prices more and more, so I'd say go with them for a budget system. Overclocking, while fun, usually doesn't yield much in the FPS department and increases the likely chances of a freeze up and other crap.
