Today i passed burj dubai and it grows and grows. every 4th day another level

Have you heard anything about that other building that's supposed to out-do it in Dubai? Any broken ground on that project?
Edit* The other tower is called the Al Burj.

Really? We talk about Dubai all the time at school, which is odd, given our location and general student body statistics.

A family friend is living in Dubai right now (I believe she just got back from China), doing some work with the folks who are building the islands that look like a palm tree.

Most of the workers are citizens over there. And the citizens actually get large amounts of money, so much, some don't even have to work, but someone has to get the job done.
So, how exactly is it slavery? I don't think I'd mind building a tower for them for the paychecks they being citizens.

EDIT* My apologies Sureshot. Most of their workers ARE immigrants who get $4.00 an hour and skilled carpenters $7.50. So, ignore my comment.

It surprised me too actually, I read it in the Guardian a few weeks ago. They often have some good sections on things like that, ie people in China who fight against the state, etc.

Do you mean the islands being shaped like the world? Because I think the Palm Tree Island has been completed for a while now.

Well, there’s more than one palm tree island (three, IIRC), and I don’t think they’re completely finished.

I just noticed, with comical oversight, that this is sort of a repost.
Yes, I remembered making a thread about it, but didn’t bother bringing it up. ;)

well there was supposed to be another project on the highest building in the world but that got cancelled for now. it was supposed to be on the palm (which my dad is constructing on)

you shoud have seen what the US police has done when i showed them my U.A.E driving license. They checked it for 45 mins and whenever the office approached my car he had his pistol out of his holster and facing the ground...:nervous:

Cool. 👍

Chris, you should show us some pictures of the Palm Islands (if you wish). Almost every picture I've seen of them is from the air. I'd like to see what they look like from ground level.

Dubai City

Dubai plans first rotating skyscraper (USA Today)
Posted 11/29/2006

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The Arab city with the palm-shaped islands and the sail-shaped hotel is adding to its eclectic skyline by building the world's first rotating skyscraper, a 30-story apartment tower that revolves on its base.

The tower, announced Wednesday, will use the Persian Gulf's abundant sunshine to power the building's slow rotation that brings it full circle once a week, said Nick Cooper, a British engineer designing the rotation mechanism.

"This will be a fair building," said Cooper, of M.G. Bennett and Associates Ltd. of Rotherham, England. "Everybody will have the same views for the same amount of time, so you won't have certain rooms with the best view."

The 80,000-ton building with 200 apartments will sit on a giant bearing 30 yards in diameter, coated with a nearly frictionless polymer, Cooper said. Twenty small electric engines will turn the building a few degrees each hour, Cooper said.

"It will be indexing around on the hour," Cooper said. "It moves very slowly. It's not a theme park ride."

But a theme park's manmade lakes, malls and simulated dinosaur park will be the primary view from the so-called Time Residences. The developer plans to complete the structure by 2009 as a centerpiece in the giant Dubailand amusement park now under construction.

Good god, that'd be an amazing sight. DubaiLand is just insane on its own. Last I saw, 1 rollercoaster and a T-Rex were behind a wall with DubaiLand on it, so I wonder how much has been accomplished since 6-7 months ago.

Now even another incentive to visit Dubai; besides purchasing 'Australia' in the World Islands.

My only worry is that the building seems to be being built too quickly.

Like, i feel if they took a little more time it might end up stronger/safer/with less chance of things going wrong one day.

But then again it could be perfectly safe at the rate they are constructing it?

Well, it is the Middle East. And imo, tall buildings and the Middle-East just don't sound like a good combination...

I'm kind of sad that Dubai is slowly making it's way into the popculture.

Soon, everybody is going to know where it is, why it's so famous, and they'll all be making references to it thinking they're being clever and insightful (as we are now ;) ).

You don't think "What happens in Dubai stays in Dubai" has that same ring to it? :dopey:

That's actually pretty good. I wouldn't mind if it became known as the Las Vegas of the middle east.

It did used to be known as The Pearl Of The Persian Gulf . . . and Eden . . . hehehe.

(srsly it did)

They have to be getting close to the top of the thing, right? It really is surprising how quickly that thing went up.

That's what happens with an infinite budget and warm sunny weather almost all year around.

By looking at this picture I would say yes. It looks like they are done with the floors and are beginning to ad the steel spire to the top. Unless the top few floors would be framed with steel...then who knows? :scared:

They are going to have to air condition that whole thing! :scared:

That would alone pump out enough climate changing heat as a small country!
