If you want a more expensive but better computer I would by a Hewlett Packard. (HP) They are a little more expensive than most computers but the are really good. They are fast and run games smoothly. Games like SimCity3000 Unlimited that take up LOADS of room run smooth and games like Quake and Driving games run with smooth framerates. I would buy a HP. :)

I would avoid Compaq. I have been an avid Compaq customer for about eight years for my company, and with recent events, avoid compaq at all costs.

I am assuming that since your asking "which" computer, your probably not into building them.., so with that I would say that Dell is a very safe way to go.

You might also check out Alienware which has some pretty main-stream gaming configurations that are pretty good, and they look cool to.

As far as internet connection.... Any new computer will deliver close to same performance to the web, what really counts now is your Internet Service Provider, and what service they can provide to you.

My only advise is: Buy what you can afford.

Good Luck!

Go with Dell. We got a new Dell last month, and it's great. You can order it off of the internet, and get it setup with all the stuff you want, and without the stuff you don't want. They ship the pc out when they're done setting it up, and it takes 3-5 days for shipping. And there's no long registration like you find on boxed pcs(our '96 Presario had the longest damn registration, took us an hr to get though it), becuase Dell takes care of it.

Dell has the best service, and a lot of options. We got a pentium 4, 1.7Ghz, 17" monitor, 3 piece speaker set with sub, upgraded mouse, and more for only $1500 bucks(we paid $2100 for our presario, and that was only 166mhz, 15" monitor...but I got it in my room now so I'm happy).

Hope that helps you make your decision.

Dude, get a Dell. There is no question to it.

Ok the facts and reasoning:

Basically every one of the computer 'manufacturers' use off-the-shelf parts and assemble very similar computers. They all use Creative SoundBlaster Live sounds cards, ATI or NVidia video cards, Maxtor hard drives, Soyo or Abit motherboards, and 3Com network and modem cards. They all use different speakers (who cares, they're all the same), and different cases (you're a consumer, this does not matter to you), crummy keyboards and mice (unless you go namebrand instead of 'packaged'), and generally cheapo monitors.

Gateway - Gateway .... is for your grandmother. I don't know how to explain that, but it's true. I've never been a fan of Gateway, and every one that I've been asked to "JUST FIX IT!!!", I couldn't ... and that's sort of what I do for a living.

Compaq - Ok, Compaq doesn't really use off-the-shelf parts in their desktops like everyone else does. Their cases are bass-ackwards, and their stuff is hard to work on. Probably why they're having trouble keeping techs around.

Dell - They really do use namebrand off-the-shelf parts just like you can get at Best Buy or CompUSA. Personally I think that's a good thing. You can look up these parts on any hardware reviewer's site to see what they think. It's rather hard to find someone that has reviewed a distributer's modified video card... because no one cares. Also, Dell's support has to be the best I have ever dealt with. I support 40 Dell workstations and 3 servers. I own 4 Dells of my own. The one time I called Dell about my own computer (two and a half years into a three year warrenty) they sent me $150 worth of parts, no questions asked (I didn't have 3 years onsite service ... because I do that myself (: ). The two times I called for support on computers at work, a guy showed up at my office with parts in four hours.

On, and they've got funny comercials now - "Dude, you're gettin` a Dell!"

HEWLETT PACKARD!!!! WHAT?! They are 🤬 computers. That company needs to stick with printing products. They are the best in printing, not in computing!

I would say Gateway, but Dell is just as good. The only thing is I heard some pretty bad customer service. I have had two Gateways, and their support is excellent, probably the most enjoyable tech support I have expereinced. Plus Gateway and AOL have a good relationship going. So if your an AOL user, might be something to consider. My :2cents:

Definitely go with the Dell, I have zero positive experiences with compaq over the past few years, but Dell seems to be becoming the shining example of what a PC company should be about. They use excellent equipment, have reasonable prices, and hands down the best support of any company out there. (Excluding say... Alienware, and Falcon Northwest, but those are special cases)

Here's a few options you should look into...
Optical mouse.
Sound Blaster Live Audigy

That is what I said. Hewlett Packard all the way. Yes ther are PRIME in the printing products and all but there computers totally kick a**! I actually like them better than dell. I used to have a dell and it was a 1.2 Ghz. I now have a Hewlett Packard and it has 1.2 Ghz and it seems better. The dell had 20 MB. The HP I have has 40. The HP has a CD/RW and Burner on it and the dell didnt. All of this was ONLY about $200 more than our Dell. I think that is a good price. Im sticking with HP. :)

I have a buddy that's a tech support guy, trained on the HP Pavillion... He suggestion is to avoid HP at all costs, to not even think about, or come close to entertaining the thought of going with a HP computer. This is his experience, not mine. And that's all I have to say about HP's...

I second that motion. HP is evil. Their inkjet and laserjet products rock the house, but their home computers are pretty crappy. They do mainframes quite well though (:

hmm, Dell the company that likes to make sure your thinking of the word "hell" in its advertisments...

Or HP, who doesn't have to make you think of the word, cause they know at some point your gonna think you bought the stupid thing from there anyway.

Tough choice... I can see the problems.

DONT EVER buy a prebuilt computer, those stupid companies charge like $2000 for a computer i built for $600

Sure thing, bub. Did you include a 3 year warrenty, support, and software? How about a monitor? Or what about assembly time and know-how? Companies like IBM, HP, Dell, and Gateway do all the research to make sure all the parts will work well together. I have had ZERO hardware conflicts in the past four years with my computers. And besides, it was only about $150 more to buy from Dell than it would have been to buy all the parts. And the Dell price included the OS/Software and warrenty, where-as the one I would have built myself did not include any of that. And that was going from the cheapest I could find on Pricewatch.com. Their prices really are competetive. It's just that some companies don't offer as my options as you obviously have when you build one yourself.
