"Can We Get This Thread Locked" the new "Reported"?

I thought about posting it in this thread, but this seems to be a different issue (feel free to merge if you disagree, as they do seem to be the same root cause).

Lately, I've been noticing that some threads have been being posted in by people who seem to be trying to whip up a mob mentality to force mods to close them purely because they don't like the discussion. There was that infamous flameout by ReincarnationB last week, but more frequently I've been seeing more benign but still obnoxious stuff along these lines:

It should be locked, all other GT vs FM threads get locked and re-directed to the GT vs FM thread, I don't see why this one should be any different..
Who agrees that this thread should be locked up?
Why this thread it's still not locked ????????

That tend to be posted soon after a moderator enters a thread, like they are trying to cause a scene when they think the staff are still around to force the issue and were just waiting for mods to post in them to do it.

It seems to me that this is basically backseat modding at its worst, because the people doing it aren't even doing it over AUP violations; but I was curious what others thought about it.

Indeed, they seem to be the new "In Before the Lock" type of post.

Technically though, they aren't violating the AUP.

Anyone who posts in that manner who believes that it will sway a staff action is seriously miss-guided.

I can also assure you that anyone who makes it a common occurrence will draw the attention of the staff in a negative way.

Scaff

Seriously? I think It might just be a coincidence, I see you quoted my post, it was never my intention to do anything you mentioned.. I just noticed every Forza vs GT thread being closed and redirected to the "official" Forza vs GT thread, and I was just curious as to why discussion in that thread was continuing. I feel like I've been falsely accused of a crime or something.

You could at least supply a link for the members to go to. You may be mentioning it, but knowing how people can be, they won't find it. Just saying.

What about the posts consisting of "Mods please close this"? They're not posted by the thread owner in the first place. Does this go under the same category?

I hope so because they are just as bad. It seems that they deem it on their authority that the decide whats what...

Which they don't

Threads are closed on a case-by-case basis, although most threads get closed for the same reasons. If there's sufficient grounds to keep it open, we do so.

I can think if at least one occasion where the original question was valid, most of the conversation was going in the right directions, but one or two members were derailing the thread. We delete the nonsense posts, and any fallout or miscellaneous drivel, and the thread marched on.

We don't need much in the way of suggestions. If you'd like to make it clear that staying in topic is preferable, then do so nicely, if at all. Baiting members with a lock is rarely the answer, especially if you hold no power to do so, and it's generally quite rude...just report the thread and give reasons why.

So pupik, if a thread had a few off topic posts but was generally on topic as a whole does that deem a lock/report or not? :)

Well look at the Grinds My Gears thread. We had a 1 or 2 page conversation about a certain thing a guy said that grinded his gears and apparently it was "off topic" though i dont believe it was and they locked it

Some threads are just beyond saving, and/or too stupid to keep.

Crushed

I honestly believe that the grinds my gears thread would do just fine if it were unlocked. People have learned their lesson and have shown it by staying on topic in the oil my gears thread, which is basically the same type of thread. I'm sure the grinds my gears thread would stay on topic. But I'm not a mod so I don't really deserve to have a say in what goes on around here.

If this thread is going to turn into a "please bring back the grinds my gears thread", forget it.

I have a new term for this: Gear Whine. Don't make us replace the transmission, we don't do overhauls.

OMG this thread needs to be locked.

Damn forgot the text speak to add to the effect of the average person who does it on a regular basis.

That's why we have tolerance and balance; maybe one in fifty threads gets locked, other than those that tread the same ground over and over again.

Example: Is PSN down?

I think its annoying when people post "someone lock this" because why post if your not going to help the creator or add to a conversation. If you want to report fine but no use posting a useless post...

Lets get our facts straight; it was more like 50-60 pages of slow chat, not 1 or 2.

I have noticed this sort of thing of late!!

I chalked it up to springtime arriving... though that's not the case all over the world. :boggled:

I like some good people watching, I will admit. :guilty: I would never want a thread locked up just because it was stupid, because sometimes the ridiculous can be entertaining. :mischievous:
If it's harmless, :dopey:, what's the harm, right? :D

That said, if I think something's just pointless, irrelevant, and rude for the sake of rudeness, I just hit the report button.
And let the mods do what they may...
just report the thread and give reasons why.
👍
if that's to lock or not lock a thread, warn someone, or whatever...
I have no clue what happens afterward, and it's not my concern. 👍
