Hey guys,

So I found out a week ago that they sell Peugeots in Mexico, with Left hand drive. As a child, I have always had a thing for Peugeots, as I always thought the 206 was a cool car. So now, since that Mexico is in NAFTA, a part of the North American Continent, and not too far from Canada, can we inport it here, or at least into the US fully, without it being a Grey import?

Do you really want to be a Peugeot owner living 1000 miles away from the nearest dealer/garage?

You must really like Peugeots!

Do you really want a Peugeot from Mexico? It will probably have 10 bodies in the trunk and stink like pot by the time it gets over the border.

You're way lost. Peugeots are bleh cars. If it was, I dunno, an Aston Martin from here, maybe. A Peugeot? Pppfff

Expensive comes to mind, insurance will probably be more, shipping it would cost lot, & not to mention I hear they're junk.

People tend to forget that Peugeots were actually legally imported into the US for a long time, until the early/mid 1990s. When I lived in Maine, my family owned several. Two 505s, and three 504s. They all died well before they should have. One of them burned to the ground. Cool cars, but dreadfully unreliable.

Yes, just like Renault, there's a reason they don't sell them in Can/US anymore. Everyone who I heard owned one (A Renault) had problems of some sort. They failed in our market.

These failures during the '80s/'90s have tainted their reputation(s) here.

Always liked the styling of the 505. Incredibly rare in the UK now, unfortunately.

Can certainly see the appeal of importing an RCZ - it'd stand out a mile in Canadia. However, if I recall correctly, you'll have to wait until it's 15 years old. On the plus side, 15 years is enough time to allow the car to fall to bits if needs be. If there are still RCZs around in 15 years, then you can assume it'll survive long after that.

On a related note, the RCZ is one of the best cars I've driven this year.

I used to want to get a 405 when I was younger, but I doubt theres many stil around (exept for Iran)

I mean... look at it.

But now, its the RCZ. There are very few Peugeots still left in Canada, saw one the other day.

Yes, you would need to wait 15 years... which isnt nice. But, I know people who have bought brand new cars in the states and brought them over because they were cheaper.

You've got Pininfarina to thank for the 405. Still a nice design and supposed to be good handlers too. Top-spec Mi16s are now incredibly rare unfortunately, but there are a few boggo models knocking about in the UK still.

Indeed, the 15 year rule is in effect as far as I know (On Canada's Registrat for Imported Vehicles, it says all Peugeots are inadmissible...). But if you really have thing for Peugeots - perhaps a trip to the islands of Saint Pierre and Miquelon off the coast of Newfoundland might be in order? They are still owned by France and thus have French cars. Also, there are people who buy U.S. cars to import back to Canada - both because it is cheaper for some, and especially if they are made in the U.S. because there is no duty on it when entering Canada.

I don't think Peugeots are very popular in Mexico. I tend to see quite a few Seats and odd VW's(with Mexican tags) but never any new Peugeots here in Texas.

UPDATE: Ladies and Gentlemen, I have found a way:

You can import any type of car into Canada after is is 15 years or older. So, when I went on Autotrader today, you can buy the legendary 106 GTi:

Or an awesome 206:

Would be a fun choice - the GTI is a great little car. To be honest though, if you're looking to import a Pug, I'd make it worthwhile and try and find something like a 205 GTI - if they ever sold them in Mexico.

awesome 206

Does not compute (WRC aside).

Also, I'm pretty sure I brought up the 15-year thing last year when you originally asked about buying a Peugeot ;) It shouldn't be new and exciting news to you by now...

The only cars I've had experience driving to date are a 206 and 2010 Kia Rio. Both diesel.

And the fact that I'd much rather be behind the wheel of the Rio says a lot about how "awesome" I think the 206 is.

Well, it's a French diesel. There's nothing more to say. XD

The 206 has quite the Recall history...

Honest John

September 2006 repeat recall of early 206s: "We note from our records that your 206 requires rectification under the X3K recall. It has been identified that it is necessary to exchange the two clevis pins on the break pedal system to avoid any rick of loss of braking. We have experienced a limited number of incidents where one of the pins has not been locked properly during fitting. This work will be completed free of charge.'

My mate had a 206 Quicksilver and had all sorts of problems. Including needing a whole new wiring loom installed. Horrible car all round.

There were 2 205s at a Quebec car show plus a old Renault pics of them are in the event thread but I don't know how hard it is to import them to the states. Page 100 in the event thread the pics of the 205s and a Renault.

I'm sure you're trying to be flippant here, but "French diesel" is actually quite a good thing - Peugeot and Citroen have long been two of the best carmakers when it comes to making diesels.

Just look at the LMP1 908... They obviously know how to diesel :)

Odd I see them all the time here in Albuquerque with Mexican Plates.
