I think the death you're thinking of is Alberto Ascari, who was Lancia's GP driver in 1955. But he actually died while testing a Ferrari at Monza. Lancia was losing money (in large part because of the enormous costs of the F1 team), so the Lancia family sold off controlling interest in the company. That led the new owners to transfer the assets of Scuderia Lancia to Scuderia Ferrari near the end of the 1955 season. So it was known as the Lancia D50 from 1954 through most of 1955, Lancia-Ferrari D50 at the end of the 1955 season, Ferrari D50 in 1956, and Ferrari 801 in 1957.*note: lancia ferrari, after a terrible accident, lancia donated several of his racers to the ferrari team(i didnt check on this, i hope memory serves me well)... thanks Populuxe Cowboy for the nice image you posted ;D
