Car Crashes!

I'm kind of curious what the view looks like from the other direction to see why the hell these people can't keep control of their cars. Especially a 60ft bus... :dopey:

That's a certain fatal crash at around 7'15 in Serge's first link up there

As is the one at 4'10.

The cyclist - spectator punch up on the bridge was marginally amusing though.

Lefortovo tunnel (Russian: Лефортово тоннель) is a road tunnel in the Lefortovo District in Moscow, Russia. It is a part of the Third Ring road. At 2.2 km (1.4 miles) long, it is the fourth longest in-city tunnel of Europe (after the Dublin Port Tunnel at 4.5 km, the Södra länken in Stockholm at 4.5 km, and the Giovanni XXIII Tunnel in Rome at 2.9 km).

The tunnel runs under the Yauza River, and water leaks in at some points. When the temperature reaches −38 degrees Celsius as during the winter of 2005, the road surface can freeze.

It has been nicknamed "The Tunnel of Death" due to its high accident rate and a video circulating around the Internet apparently compiling footage of vehicle accidents recorded by monitoring cameras.

Search Google Video for "tunnel crashes" and you'll get about 2700 results for that video. I saw one that said the reason:

"This 3150 m long tunnel in Russia is the longest in-city tunnel of Europe. There is a river running over it and water leaks at some points. When the temperature reaches -38 degrees like it did this winter, the road freezes and the result is the attached video taken during a single day with the tunnel camera. PS: I wouldn't like to be on that bus."

I've seen those before, but they're still funny to watch.:sly: I especially like how in the last one the motorcycle driver just walks off after the accident, not checking on his bike or anything.

:-)

On the first two what do people/insurance companies do for these situations? Who's the big loser in all this? Does it happen frequently? :scared:

Not really funny but shows how stupid Merc. was to miscalculate the needed downforce on the front wing :dunce:

They had plenty of downforce, but the road peaked sharply enough on that hill (which they've since levelled) that air got under the nose of the car. The car actually got light enough over the crest to raise the nose. A similar accident happend at Road Atlanta with a Porsche GT1 on the back straight.

Th third video sort of reminds me of Grand Theft Auto- Car hits bike, biker throws gesture and walks away, nobody cares and nothing changes until you exit the area.

That, and 2 other things: a) in all three cases - the Mercs, Porsche and BMW - the car that flipped was very close to the car in front. The turbulant air causes a loss of frontal downforce (which is why F1 cars can't overtake easily) and b) the floors of the cars were completely smooth, so the air just pushed the car up like a kite. A BMW LM car did the same in 2000.

So hay Roo... if it's the case that it's caused by drafting and a rise in the road then why didn't other cars with similar forms flip? I mean in that situation it could happen to a lot of other cars no? Like your GT-one.

Man, in the slow-mo, some of those drops almost look gentle... until you see them at full speed, or the bike rolls over him, or something.

My favorite was the one were the two guys got together on the front straight, and the one rider took a header and slid down the track. You could watch the stripe his butt was leaving change color from white to blue as it went through successive layers of leather.

I knew it! Was expecting something more... spectacular though. :grumpy:

Here's a technical analasys of the events at Le Mans with the CLRs from an aerodynamicist.

I ment to reply to this to let you know that I haven't the foggiest idea but forgot. I was thinking of the site that exigeracer posted, but couldn't remember the addy.

I can't even comprehend how idiotic some people where there. One guy looked as if he was genuinly trying to be run over, its downright foolish driving.

Stupefiying. I can't comprehend how bad/idiotic/utterly clueless you'd have to be to have some of these accidents.

I have absolutely no sympathy for the jay walking idiot pedestrians. As for the red light runners hopefully they got what's coming to them.
