Sainz declared Star Of The Rally
Argentina - Citroën - Carlos Sainz - 19/07/2004 10:12:29

Double world champion Carlos Sainz had been awarded the Inmarsat Star of the Rally prize for scoring his record-breaking 26th career World Rally Championship victory for Citroen in Argentina last weekend.

The Spaniard has now surpassed the record of 25 wins that he jointly held with 1995 world champion Colin McRae – a fact that McRae’s former co-driver, Nicky Grist, who heads the judging panel, clearly recognized as being impressive.

Sainz was also praised for his spirit in chasing and pressuring the Peugeot of Marcus Gronholm for the majority of the rally and then benefiting from his retirement – an indication that the 42-year-old has lost none of his consistency or speed.

“From the start of the rally, Carlos has driven absolutely brilliantly putting Marcus under pressure all the way until he made a mistake and then was handed a very comfortable lead. What has made it so special is the fact that this victory, which is his 26th, makes him the most successful rally driver of all time.”

Sainz was delighted to receive the award after a victory in front of a passionate Latin-speaking Argentinian crowd that clearly meant a lot to him. “For today, I didn’t want to think of anything other than getting through the stages, especially the penultimate one – anything was possible in there. Winning a rally is always a great feeling, but this one even more so as the 26 wins means so much to me.”

And before WRC show the race. I heard him say this:

There is no Micheal Shumacher in a Ferrari always winning.

That was when WRC went on the topic on "contenders."
