I initially thought the whole hero thing was slightly exaggerated.
You're not the only one, although I do believe my friend Malcolm took it a bit far the other day by suggesting that if the pilot were a real hero, he would have gone down with the plane as it sank, Titanic-style.

I always figured, if everyone else survived, then there's no reason to be in shame for the maneuver. Otherwise, that's like saying every driver that crashes their car ought to die nobly behind the wheel.

You could always be honest and up-front about it, and save face with a dash of (language warning) humor.
