Chevrolet Captiva - hot or not?

Is the Captiva related to Daewoo or Opel technology?

Both! It was originally a concept from Daewoo, and will be sold as a Daewoo in those three countries where Daewoo still, more or less, sells cars. In Europe, this will be sold under the Chevy and Opel, the latter as an Antara, replacing the Frontera.

Well, at least I think it looks nice (not great though). But I think that, if you go for a more S3X look, it can be a nice car to look at. With wider, low profile tires, maybe even better to drive!

Let's cut to the chase, guys: this is not bound to be a true off-roader, just a light one. Thank god you're not supposed to be driving this:

The dreadful Volkswagen CrossFox... Europeans will know it...

...Hey a Fox! I had one of those! Although mine was a 93, and it was a sedan, and it wassent as nice as the new model...

Wouldnt it be easier to thow Chevy badges on the Holden Adventra and send it to the US? V8 options are nice...

It reminds me of Bimmer and Audi. Rear looks like Toyota Matrix to me for some reason. It is kinda bland looking, but I think it's pretty nice looking SUV.

A6m5, I've described the Captiva as a "sexier Pontiac Vibe." Personally, I'm more into cars than trucks and SUVs, but this looks pretty nice and pretty civilized. The premise some people make is that SUVs were made for the off-road. My thing is, I don't really see SUVs in off-road use except for maybe Jeeps and Land Rovers. If I was going to do some off-roading, I'd kick some ass with a truck. I think the best truck that can be good off road and on road is probably the Toyota Tacoma, especially the X-Runner variant. Another such machine not really known for off-road prowess was likely the Infiniti FX45.

To me, if this makes it into America, its challengers would likely be stuff like the Nissan Murano. It just has the nice lines and curves to it. It doesn't look supremely radical or just big. If this makes it to the States, this machine may be embraced more than people thought about the Honda Ridgeline. It is a very nice vehicle whether it makes it to America or not.

As a just for fun deal, if they make an Xtreme out of it, I wonder what GTP member will call himself/herself "CaptivaXtreme." ;)

They did here. And you see a lot of them on the streets, surprisingly. :ouch:

Sorry to get a little off-topic, but I believe this is of interest...

Yes... FatAss is a "homie", so he knows, just like me, that people are easily cheated on by such things. They take the normal Fox (note to americans: the Fox you know is a version of the brazilian VW Voyage of the 80's... This new model is bound to replace the VW Lupo in europe), put big fat tires, some "macho" gear on it and off you go! That's just plain stupid! But, at least here, people are buying it like nothing else! And it costs from 20 to 35% more than a standard Fox, depending on optional equipment. And this car just can't do anything off-road! It's just for the looks! And most people buy cars... for the looks!

I believe that's what gonna happen to the Captiva. It's not that it needs to be a true off-roader, but will certainly be more capable than the piece of **** shown below. And there are some new examples by Fiat, Ford and Chevrolet itself! Look:

The CrossFox: take a Fox and give him a "fat" look...

Now tell me guys: aren't they hideous? And, to make you more scared(:scared:), with exception of the Fiesta and Celta, which are kits that can be installed on older cars (although these kits were developed by the manufacturers), all other cars sell MORE than its on-road counterparts...

If the CrossFox and Fiesta trail are selling well... I guess that means Brazilian roads are as bad as ours. Sometimes, I want to take off my low-profiles (actually, semi-low... unlike the US version of my car, which wears 17's, mine has 16's), stick on some truck tires and raise the car a few inches... third world roads suck.

The thing with "soft roaders" is that there is no conceit of being able to off-road them. Know why they sell ****-loads of CRVs in Asia? Because they better ground clearance, stronger suspensions and more crash structure than sedans without being as costly as real off-roaders. They're for people who want to be prepared for anything, but don't make a career of looking for trouble. In other words... moms.

Like I said. The ultimate appliance. Drive and forget about. None of this pussyfooting around potholes or avoiding kerbs and standing water.

Oh, what the hell... the fakey "I'm an off-roading bastitch" feeling owners get is also a big factor.

I never saw the Celta and Fiesta "off-road" versions before, they're terrible. I like the Strada though. :)

And yes, niky, we've got some awful roads over here.

The thing is: both Fiesta Trail and Celta Off-Road are just normal versions with bumper kits... They didn't even change the ride height. The CrossFox has higher ground clearance, but its suspension is just like the normal Fox. The only cars in this segment that have more off-road capabilities (a little more than the others) are the Fiat Adventure models (Palio, Strada and Doblò), because they have forged suspensions arms and bearings and all-terrain tires, instead of the road-only tires of the others. The Fiats are bound to last longer on rough roads compared to the compacts.

Back to the Captiva: the market here in Brazil for such a car would be great, thanks to the Chevrolet name (it's still very respected). And definately, it's much more of a looker than our Blazer. It's the kind of product that's still fresh to our market. We still need mid-size SUVs in our country (obviously, if the price tag isn't too high, a very common thing here, thanks to the humongous taxes we have to pay).

The cheapest SUV you can find in our shores is the Ford EcoSport. It's based on the Ford Fiesta, but it's very strong and on-road and off-road dynamics is great (it's what the european Fusion should have been in the first place). Check it out:

...As a VW fan, I'd buy the Fox in any form if it came 'Stateside. Small VWs are great, and thats why VW fans (and I am not kidding here) fight over Foxes when they go for sale here. A friend of mine who owns a VW/Audi specialty dealer sold a '91 VW Fox Coupe/Wagon for nearly $4000 after he bought it for $1000 at an auction.

What about the Fiat Panda 4X4? I hear its a pretty good car (didnt it win European car of the year last year?), and I have to say it is rather attractive... Just over $20K USD fully loaded is pretty good compared to, well, there really isnt any competition in the US.

The fronts not bad. It reminds me of the Mazda Concept Crossover from GT4. The back is meh.

VIPERGTSR01
The front end has got the next model Holden Commodore (VE) look to it and its a new platform. I have a strong feeling this will be very similar to our Holden SUV we will get.

Yep I was right

I like Holden's headlights better. Also the low profile tyres are a nice touch. Not very off-road though.

Because you're not in a country where the company think you can't handle anything outside of a cookie cutter shape.
