Are there even enough cars to justify it? Or will this be like those huge extravagant malls they built without seeing if any stores would move in?

Actually, if you look in the distance, you see the same thing coming the other way, ginormously wide set of lanes into the toll gates and then funneling down to four.

It's not a 50-lane highway, it's a wide spot for people to get to the toll gates. Thing is, everybody in China was travelling that day, some kind of holiday or something. Americans, think of your local turnpike on the Sunday of 4th of July weekend, before the EZ Pass stuff existed and you actually had to handle money at the gate, and get change.

I wonder how many people stuck in that traffic jam ran out of fuel. Also, from watching that video there's a lot of smog.

Proves to me that commonsense isn't a prerequisite to car ownership or the issuing of a driver's licence

Never has been, that's proven every day in most countries I'd assume. Especially in the U.S. where I could go outside my home any given day and the nearby freeway is guaranteed to have a stupid accident that could have been avoided if common sense and patience were used.

As a professional Truck Driver that spends in excess of 60 hours a week on the road, my comment was said with the utmost restraint.
If I was to exercise free speech and really voice my opinion, I have no doubt that would violate the AUP.
I will add this though, here in Australia the driving standards have rocketed to the bottom of the barrel & something really needs to be done about it. If it wasn't for my reaction times or having somewhere to swerve, I know of times in the past where I would've sent stupid drivers to the morgue.

Yeah my dad is a truck driver as well, so I learned how to drive in a pretty strict manner. And thus I also have the same mentality as you just to a lesser degree since I'm not always on the road like you or my father. However, when a stupid move is pulled I do get very upset and I feel this situation seen here would just drive me up the wall so easily.

Well I'm really glad you've had the benefit of sitting up high beside a professional so you can see what goes on. I have no doubt that's made you a more educated driver. If it was my call, I'd make it compulsory for a Learner Driver to have to travel with a Truckie for a minimum of a week before they sit their Driver's Licence.
I'd been driving cars for 10 years when I upgraded to Trucks. I thought I knew it all as I used to drive vans for work. That first week in a truck was a reality check & really opened my eyes.

Thank you for pointing out what the brain-dead media failed to inform (by extensive clicking and dragging on Google Maps for thirty seconds).

Still a masterstroke of piss-poor highway design.
