Bah, I'm surprised I didn't make it

Though you did a nice job with contrast, I didn't care for the composition of the photograph. There was a bright object of some sort to the left of the frame that really distracted me; the cropping of the car was a little odd... I felt like it should either be cropped wider and get all of the car, or cropped tighter for half of it.

Wow, I'm surprised mine's doing so well. I didn't think I'd even make it!

Really? That was one of the five or six I knew would make the poll on my first run through the entries... I'm not shocked that it's in contention at all. 👍

Any reason(s) mine didn't make the final cut?

Two reasons, primarily. First, the focus seemed off as there was a lot of softness/blurring on the car. Second, the subject (i.e., the car) was a bit too dark for my taste. I'd have exposed the photo for the car and let the sky go white.

That's fine. But a lot of entries the composition is pretty far off as well as the cars are cut off in the wrong places. Thanks for the input though.

Rossticles: It's always good to seek constructive criticism - you're right, we don't get better if all we get is praise. As for your shot, it wasn't a bad shot, but it just didn't pop like the ones that made the poll. Part of it is a lack of contrast in the car, as you suggest - but mostly it's just that the lighting is sort of :indiff: meh. Composition's a little too tight for my taste, too. Like I said, not bad - but with 70+ shots to compete with, it just didn't quite get there. Better luck next time! :)
What's with the eye roll? I genuinely like hearing the honest opinions of people. I probably completely misunderstood what you were rolling eyes at.

Sorry about the confusion - I was rolling my eyes as a response to all the 'praise' people and photos receive instead of useful criticism. BobForumReader says "nice shot". That's when I roll my eyes - because, really, how useful is that?

So, just to be really clear, I definitely was not rolling my eyes toward you, or towards your statement/question. :)

So my explanation was "fine"... but then it seems you insinuate I made poor choices on images that made the cut by selecting photos where the composition was "pretty far off". I assume you mean they were further "off" than yours was?

As a reminder, it wasn't just that the front of the car was cut off in a way that didn't make visual sense - it was the highly-distracting bright object to the left of the car. The eye is always drawn to the brightest area of a photograph - and when that isn't the subject, there needs to be a good compositional reason for it. I found that my eyes were led out of the frame too easily - your shot did not manage to keep my attention. Also (and I should have mentioned this in my initial response), the highly-noticeable banding in your car (esp. above the headlamp) took away from the image quality. Gotta take a blur brush or some other smoothing tool to those.

If it helps, there are a couple of shots that made the poll where I wasn't nuts about the composition, but they made up for it by having better lighting, good perspective, excellent use of contrast or some other redeeming feature.

You're welcome for the input, though. :)

Dramatic environmental lighting and surroundings (Aleman)

Consider the result so far, seem that environmental lighting and surroundings are not the only things dramatic! :sly:

I'm not surprised though!!

👍

I was wondering WTF.

This isn't so bad in the contest threads as it saves having too much clutter but when people do it in galleries it really bugs me. If you've taken the time to view the thread and enjoy looking at the photos, don't just say 'they're nice', tell people why you like them so they can improve and take more shots to please people!

It makes me think that some people are only doing it so they can get feedback on their own work. I can guarantee them that they won't get feedback from me by doing that

A nice close race! Congrats to CCXRacer! I realize you have no net connection until some time today, but that's alright, check your PM box and get me a Classic Poll style theme whenever you get the chance!

Congrats to CCXRacer and to all who made the poll - I had a great (albeit difficult) time judging the entries, and I'm glad to see a unique and quality entry take the win!

Wow thanks everyone for voting for me!

I think your pic was the best from the beginning of the contest. For me it captures a moment of tranquility on a racetrack. Could be in the morning and the fog just cleared because of the sun. In the distance you can hear roaring engines. Any moment a car can come by at high speed and touch those kerbstones and make an end to that serene moment.
