Got to say im surprised myself at the rate of votes,

And the mild controversy over the shot...

Im very happy with it,

and happy with it being critiqued too ...

some of these shots i find rather questionable as to their entrance. The rm 1969 camaro shot, for example, has half the car completely cut off in a very unappealing way.

+1

I'd go even further to say that some of the ones left out could be rounded up, a vote put on them and the best of those would probably beat the best of these.

Thus is the nature of opening the voting up to the general public. It will never be about which shot is best composed or meets all the proper artistic criteria. As long as everyone is still enamored with the insane level of detail, I would imagine that those shots that look most realistic will continue to have an advantage until a photomode comp is setup to be judged strictly by people with formal photography training.

Post up your best pics, vote for the one you like, and enjoy the pics you enjoy. It's not like this competition means anything.

Why don't a few of you formally trained art types give a weekly informal 'best composed' top pick? And maybe a short explanation why. (After the poll closes of course)

Why is this still going? It's already obvious which one is going to win.

Should have kept this just amongst ourselves. :grumpy:

LOL, I get what you mean but as long as we're having fun doing photomode does it really matter? Also, realism does not always mean a sure victory. Depends on the theme as well... ;)

Blame Slip for posting it up on the main page. :P
I kid, I kid.

Yep, it's the line we chose to walk with the basic setup of the competition. We wanted the community involved in as many of the steps as possible, while still giving the "winner" something each week (Theme, chance to pick the poll entries). You'd still run into complaints by having a lineup of judges, anyways; if they were picking the poll entries, there'd be people upset at being passed over, and if they skipped the poll thing altogether to just crown a winner amongst themselves, much like the Picture Of The Week competition that started up last month (and seems to have disappeared), then there's even more potential for disagreements. And in both that setup and our current one, there's a degree of favourtism that can rear it's head, too.

The best images nail both sides; look at Moglet's Lambo shot this week, it's realism, but it appeals on the artistic front too.

Yep, and we don't want them to be taken too seriously, as that tends to lead to bitterness. I introduced the prizes just to draw a bit more entries, but really, any in-game prizes will be almost of no value in a few months. It's all about having fun and learning about those artistic criteria from other members. At least, that's how it's always been for me.

While we don't have that (and it might be neat to incorporate in the future), one thing we've always actively encouraged is for people to discuss each other's works. We used to do it more back in GT4 and it was a fantastic way to get an idea of what others were really seeing in your own images that you might've missed. I always tried to do it with 2.0 Polls, but there were only 10 entries a week back then, and I had a lot less on my plate...

First there's rumblings we need more people joining in. Now we have too many!

That never came from me. :P

I'd rather lose because the most-voted on is a better piece than my own (not I'm implying such either way) and not because everyone goes "OMG, look at how realistic dat looks!"

Don't mind me right now, I'm grumpy. :grumpy:

I used to do full reviews (from a guy who has no formal photographic or artistic education training, an average joe kinda deal) on shots that were entered into comps.

but I can't justify posting a review post with 30 shots included. it's way too nuts.

I'm sorry for all this. It took me 3 hours to choose the best 30. For noob like me, it was not easy as plucking apple off the tree.
I try to be fair to all & the best i can do :guilty: but not enough.
I already discuss with SlipZtrEm, if i win the 2.0 advance, i will let the runner-up to host the following week. As i told Slip, I dont think I qualify as a good judge. Lack of experience, still so much to learn.

Again, i'm sorry for the disappointment & i am failed to host it well as all expected.

No, don't say that. It was a pretty tough week, you set up one hell of a challenge for us all.

I'm not entirely sure why you're apologizing.

My issue lies with all the (seemingly) blind voting, nothing you did.

Yeah, you shouldn't apologize Poli; the perk of winning is you should always pick the Top images that you yourself enjoy. It's your theme, these images should be your favourites. We vote based off that :)

Yeah I know what you guys mean, for some reason I felt unfair. Very tough week. Well I'm glad 2.0 Week 7 wouldnt be my favourites shots :)

My picture was awesome, but due to race modification, lighting, and the "miniature" effect, they thought my car was yellow and not white. I'm bummed :(

I made the Advanced Entry...
but not this one. What ?

What was wrong with this ?

Personally, the sun / moon is too intense - instead of looking at this and saying "hey, this is a great nocture - the way the sun or moon reveals the car," I say "Oh, some landscape shot...and then this car comes by" - the difference being, the car feels accidental - like someone snapped the image too late incapturing a serene landscape or too soon capture get the image of the car and the feeling of night driving on a dirt road in some good ol' classic muscle.

Let it come around another 3/4 of a second and lightly over expose it to get a range of hues. At first glance it sort of looks like you went for the cool filter with hopes that the headlights would set the car off and that the silhouette would be enough to carry the idea. Try getting the car without the headlights, from a 3/4 angle and let the sun / moon provide the texture and definition you're looking for.

That's my 20 bucks.

Ok guys - talk to me about the shot - rather than just some sly digs...

I have entered this shoot once before - didnt rate a list on the poll - or on this weeks Adv 2.0 head to head

Im not just a one shot, hit and run, plus you may yet see more of this Subaru...

I have no real photography background, but what little I do know if did apply in some ways...

Rule of 3rds - well I did try and place the grill plate on what would be the bottom right third lines...
(as in having moved through the frame...)

Yes I did push the zoom to fill the shot - kind of deliberately close to the edge almost as to 'leaving' the frame...

Depth of field was meantioned by someone - yes this one is kind of flat, but it's not maxed if i recall..
(Shame the PS3 doesnt write the settings to the pic file like a camera would - or if it can please let me know)

The fiat 500 shot is far flatter and 2/3rds of the shot is just flat colour;
not very interesting to me, the RS6 also suffers similarly in my mind.

I feel somewhat the same about most stationary (or so shot to look still) car shots, just my preferance...

@polifonic - you pick the best of the shots you like - and that's just it - 'best' is subjective....

PLUS - This might give you some clues to what I might like to see - IF i do win this week...
{Got to come up with a good theme... hmm...}

Anyways... would any more experiances photograhers like to comment - please do :)

Thanks Roninhyde :)

Ok so it was a f/45.0 shot... and though the Exif doesn't show it i'm sure it would have been panning mode 2.

Not sure I like this line in the data...

Guess we might have to be careful what we use the images for?

Malc01, like I said before I voted for your shot so maybe I'm not the best person to give you critique but here is my 0,02 Cr:

I spot three errors in the photo (these are mentioned before by others): 1) the mountain that is almost on the level of car roof but not quite (sort of accidental element in composition) 2) orange fence that is visible before the car but not behind it (big no-no in artistic shot) and 3) no frame on low right corner of photo. Also many seem to think you could have used any/many artistic trick available such as more blur, soft focus, some bold tilt etc but I don't share that opinion. Also IMO 1) and 2) are not problem in this shot but insread give the photo more real life credibility (try taking artistic photo if real moving rally car - I have with zero success). But you could have given the car just a bit more clearance on the right side.

I'm just glad I made the cut and got four votes. lol. I'm trying to learn what other people want to see in a photo, and not what I may like. When you start working on photos and editing things you see them in a different way than someone that doesnt. You look for little things and may miss the big picture. These contest are pretty kewl though, I've learned a lot from just looking at other peoples work.

I'm no artist, but I liked it. The moon might be distractingly bright, but my eye always went back to the car and not off the page.

As for the current leader, my eye tends to move to the left headlight (pass side) and then out of frame. (same thing with my entry - last one)

I voted 500 because my eye always zeroed in on the car - and I liked the overall pic. I really liked the first Delta pic, but the tail of the car seems a bit off focus.

About 5 photos I would have chose different - if'n they were all legal.

Just thrilled I slipped in the top 30.

don't apologize.
we don't all agree with your taste in the photos.
that isn't your fault. it's what makes competitions enjoyable. if we all knew exactly how to interpret a theme or subject, and knew exactly what would please you as the host or judge, then every photo would be the same.
how boring.

the fact that we don't know exactly what you want to see, only a theme that you want the photos to generally follow, makes this exciting. we can choose to interpret the theme literally, as many of the entrants did, or we can choose a specific situation show the extreme of the theme, as, for example, I wanted to do with my lancia shot. a basic white car on snow may have gotten me into the poll, but I go for "different" in what I photograph in-game. I hadn't yet seen an entrant which resembled the situation I wanted to showcase, so I entered it. no different than if I had been the judge, this poll would be vastly different. my taste in photos is different than yours. I possibly shoot different situations, and I prefer different angles. But the point of my shot was still to fit my own interpretation of your theme. that's what it's about. fitting our style, which is different for every person who takes many photos in GT5, to what you think would be interesting to see.

the entire point is for us to enter what we think fits, and YOU to judge whether we hit the mark you were looking for, or whether we missed. it is not your job to cater to our style and say "well this one is different, it's gotta be good".

this week, there was a hefty response of "well that's odd that X shot didn't make it". but guess what? that's what happens when you try to appeal to a single person.

the Poll is here to even that out. once we appeal to the single person, who may, as you do, have a taste slightly different than the rest of us, we then need to appeal to the general public. that general public had a very different taste in photo quality than the so called "regulars" or "vets" of the competitions. and that happens. as has been stated, the general playing public is still wowed by the realism possible in GT5's photomode.

so naturally a shot showcasing that quality of the application will attract attention. people with photographing experience, or artistic talent, or both (as often happens) will see things differently than the general public.

you picked what you liked. it's what you are supposed to do. you did your job, and put what sounds like a very adequate amount of work into choosing who made it to the poll.
if you had tossed a coin or just chosen randomly, we'd have reason to complain.

but that didn't happen. so we can't complain about our judge.

tupacrulez has hit the nail on the head. People will always complain about not being chosen; it's in their nature. But your decision is final and you should always stand by it! 👍
