Congrats Atlop, I'm happy to have 20% of the vote, when it was 9-0 I was fearing humiliation, thanks to the people who voted me :)

I liked the neck and neck more than the current gap. It's hard to keep up with you:tup:

I was genuinely worried when you picked up something like 10 votes in a row. You have a great shot and you definitely made it interesting. Great match, better luck in Season 2. Thanks to all who voted for me.

Thanks GOTMAXPOWER! 👍 I like your idea to use a green Ferrari, not taking the easy route. And thanks to all who voted my entry.

BIG Thanks to everyone who voted for me ^^ and good luck to everyone in the quarterfinals, hoping to see some good themes and entries ;)

congratz with your victory. Not only did you take a beautiful picture, you also chose the perfect car for it:sly:

... speechless with amazement what you guys pulled out of your hats in this comp.... simply great!

OK. The polls closed, now I can vent.

Firstly, congratulations to the winners, good luck in the next round, particularly GT_Johan, who beat me.

Commiserations to the rest of the losers, particularly tronde79 who produced in my opinion the best pic of the round, and especially in particular JohnnyBravo whose atmospheric shot of the lovely Maserati Granturismo was beaten by what appears to be a shop's mannequin left out on the street next to a Ford Fiesta. Can anyone who voted for this please explain why?

I don't want to hate on Jason_B as he's produced a number of excellent shots including this, this and this, but Polyphony Digital spent millions modelling the premium cars, a little less doing the scenery but I heard that the human figures were done by Kaz's 12 year old nephew on 'Go To Work With Your Uncle' day.

In all seriousness there is a concept know as the 'Uncanny Valley'. If you've never heard of it, check out this Extra Credits video that explains it very well. In my opinion the human figures in GT5 live firmly at the bottom of the Uncanny Valley, some have probably never seen the sun. Any photo that focuses too much on the people in GT5 automatically loses credibility in my eyes and can never beat a well taken photo of a car or scenery simply because of the deficiencies in the modelling.

Anyway, that's just my opinion, and I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who doesn't feel the same.

Cheers, Stephen

Well, since you asked for another point of view of Jason_B picture and as someone who voted for it, I'll give my opinion and judgement I had about it, comparing as well with JohnnyBravo's.

Now, first of all, I have to say, I respect your opinion but can't help to say that it's unfortunate that you think this way about pictures. In your stand point, in a battle between a Standard and a Premium, the Premium should win unconditionally and despite composition, since it's better modeled than the Standard. Now, I know this is not real life photography, but as every picture, I think that the overall composition plays a bigger role in all forms of art, being, not only on photography, but in painting, digital art, etc.

Now, about this two pictures, since the theme asked for a picture to be taken on Phototravel, both, to me respect the theme. It's funny to me, to see how each one interpreted the theme, and in this one, both had very distinct routs and to me Jason_B won major points for being so different and original. Rather than take focus on the car, he choose a random modeled person (and I have to say, it's not that bad modeled either), something, we don't see often.
But, being different, or shooting something most wouldn't dare, doesn't make an instant winner in my book. The overall composition must be good too, and it's here that I analyse things like, angle, tones, the use or not of depth of field, etc. I have to say, both were very good in composition, but Jason_B just took the lead in this field as well. He managed to capture a perfect moment, with a perfect angle and focus position. Also, the depth of field really helps this picture. Had the focus subject been centered on frame, I wouldn't have though this way at all, and I wouldn't doubt votes would be different.
I also, have to say, JohnnyBravo had a great and powerful picture, but I'm not feeling the position of the car/wheels that much. Also, the fact that most of the front is unlit, doesn't help.

Of course, this is my opinion, take it as you want.

And again, congrats to all who got through next round. To the ones who didn't, better luck next time. ;)

Thanks for your response, I agree that the people in not modelled badly, but that is sort of my point. They are just slightly wrong, and that wrongness jars.

In your stand point, in a battle between a Standard and a Premium, the Premium should win unconditionally and despite composition, since it's better modeled than the Standard.

No, because the uncanny valley doesn't exist for cars (not for me anyway). If you did the same plot of realism against familiarity for cars it would most likely be pretty much linear. It's the position on the y-axis of the graph that counts more here. Premium cars usually have an advantage over standards but the difference is not so great that it can't be overcome.

Ah well, I just wanted to get it off my chest. It's been bugging me all week.

All the best,

S

It's all good. Don't get me wrong, I also have my share of whats uncanny and what is, but if the so called uncanny is (i.e.) well photographed, or well portrait like in this case, why not?
