Further explanation of the theme, provided by tonilleshusband:

"I cannot take credit for this one - Gtuned gave me such a fun theme for my first tournament
round I have to pass it on. Not only that, I'm sure Gtuned would like to participate.
Backfires, the lovely pyrotechnics we all love to see shooting from a car's exhaust.
Make 'em big or make 'em pretty. Or both."

CARS: Any flamethrower
LOCATIONS: Any toasting location
PHOTOTRAVEL: ...Negative!
UNIQUE RESTRICTIONS: None

Please, ensure you read and understand all requirements for this competition. Failure to follow
the rules may result in disqualification. If you have any questions, please, send me a Private Message.
This Thread has everything you need to know.

  • No other editing, besides proportionally resize and rotate, is allowed outside GT5 Photomode.
  • Only one entry per user allowed. It must be that user own work and never used in another competition;
  • Do not ask other members to choose your entry.
  • Entry post must be marked with a FINAL ENTRY text and indicate which side during H2H weeks;
  • Entries may only be changed once and it must be indicated clearly;
  • Entries must be posted in either thumbnail or a preview. We recommend you to link either to it's full size;
  • Posts containing bigger previews than allowed, full sizes or links only will be ignored;
  • Previews should not exceed the limit of 500px in either direction and have any effect not present in the original image
  • It's recommend you to use a free image hosting service, such as ImageShack, Photobucket or Flickr;
  • Do not post "Honourable Mentions" or outtakes - just your Final Entry, that's all.
  • Only the best 25 entries will get through the Classic Poll Style; and best 12 for each poll in a H2H Poll Style.
  • In H2H weeks, entries must choose a "team", and the best from each poll faces off;
  • Keep in mind that the Host of this competition may ask for the original image and it must be submitted if so.
    It's recommended to store the original image (from the USB stick) until competition week ends.

Sorry for the delay, folks - had a surprise visit from family from out of town yesterday, couldn't really get away to do this.

One new rule: carried over from 2.0, I would like to remind people that the thread is for Final Entries only. It creates a lot of confusion when people fill the thread with other images. I'll be consolidating the rules between both comps tonight too - just to have them worded the same, to avoid any potential problems and ensure consistency 👍

The polls will be up in a few hours - I forgot to ask CCShaft to send the poll PM in the usual form, so it's taking a while to convert. I haven't heard from TW yet either, though. Perhaps he's having a harder time now that we're down to poll sizes of 25 and 15 (or, 12 and 8, when it comes to H2H) :D

Lastly - I realized just now that this week was meant to be a H2H week for PMC. That will be bumped to Week 29. Enjoy!

I'm probably gonna skip this one, I have never managed to take a shot of backfire that looks good.
Still, this theme is probably going to bring out some creative shots.

I remember someone here at GTP explaining the process of how to get the best flames in your shot. Just can't recall who that was, would be useful to have it I guess?

Same here ,never in all of my life had I actually Snapped a Back fire shot let alone a Good one

Haha, awesome. You can bet i'll be shooting for this one. be the first to say I won my own theme :lol:

If I can be any help I found a bit of a process to capturing backfire. First, the car has to warm up - no heat, no fire - usually a couple corners and 20 seconds of hard throttle is enough. A race car and/or max tuning especially the exhaust help with this immensely. Next, to create a backfire in a controlled way all you do is downshift - with my Tuscan RM approximately 100mph and between 4th and 3rd seem to work the best. You want the RPMs to be high but not bumping on the rev limiter when you downshift. For less frustration in capturing the flame, shift back and forth between gears many times in a row, that way if you miss the moment trying to pause the replay you have more opportunities before you have to start the replay over again. I hope this helps, feel free to ask for some help anytime, it took a bit for me to get it right and consistent.

PS. The flame moves around a lot - it doesn't stay where it should be all the time - a side exhaust makes it much easier to capture.

Looking forward to seeing what you have in store.

It's about time I got an entry in relatively early...
(OK, it's because I already had this shot sitting around, but I'll still take it for the "time management win" that it is.)

I'm not very good at getting backfire shots, and it seems completely random that I can get one that comes out OK. I think the combination of the camera angle and the car's exhaust location make this one pretty successful...

So, unless it ends up getting changed, I present for your consideration (and hopeful enjoyment) my...

FINAL ENTRY
Title: I Pulled The Viper's... Wait, Does A Viper Even Have Fingers?

It's OK to click to preview to get the full-sized entry, you won't get burned...

Good luck and happy shooting, everyone!

Peace...

Finally have an opportunity to use this! This was a close runner up to my choice for the "STOP!!!" theme in the first round of the tournament.

Final Entry

I haven't took any pictures on gt5 for months but I found this on my flickr so I may as well enter:
Final Entry

Okay, this is 100% not shopped, i swear to god. It exported this way. I about crapped my pants seeing it.
Final Entry
"Godzilla's Breath"

@Gtuned - love the faint glow of the headlights in the background, are you sure it's not shopped :sly:

It's still on my PS3, I'll put it on to share. I did it as a Super GT race at the 'Ring for pictures (Calsonic GT-R, Arcade mode), but i noticed at the first hill all the cars down shift, so i was lucky enough to capture this, except for the fact that it'd burst around the bolt on the wheel.
