Another debate is if this small amount of alcohol passes the "Halal" Tests then this might happen as well in all sort of drinks .I really wish I hadn't read this I love my Pepsi/Coke But if you know that Alcohol is present then Sadly I'll Stick to Sprite and Fanta only :indiff:

They are natural occurances though. I found this in the internet:

There isn't alcohol in OJ. But all food has some bacteria in it, and even in the refrigerator these bacteria will start acting on the sugar in the OJ and using it for food. Most bacteria are fermenters. The process of fermentation takes glucose (sugar) and through a multi-step process turns itinto carbon dioxide and alcohol.
The OJ will taste "bubbly" or "carbonated"and there will be alcohol present as well. There probably wouldn't be enough alcohol to make one feel its effects though. Refrigeration doesn't kill bacteria, it just slows its metabolism. If you were to leave the OJ out on the counter for a day, this process would happen a lot faster.

OJ is Orange Juice by the way.

The thing is, we or I don't know whether there's really any alcohol present in the Coke sold here. As long as it doesn't get you drunk, should be fine. There are so many other good and obviously Halal drinks out there... I like Sprite anyway :)

EDIT: I'll try to get you a much clearer answer by tomorrow...

Alcohol is not an intoxicant at certain low levels no matter how much you drink of it.
The reason I think, correct me if i'm wrong, that alcohol is wrong because it intoxicates?
I forget the words now but was it something like the prophet said something like if it takes even 6 litres (translated) to be intoxicated from a drink, then you should not take one sip of it. Or something to that effect. The philosophy being no matter how big the big size is, if it's possible to be intoxicated by it, then you should not have any whatsoever.
Trace alcohol, no matter how much you drink does not count as an intoxicant however much you have.
The expert reasoners said that even if there is something "bad" in something you consume, if it is so small it is in effect no longer existing because it is destroyed by the other good elements surrounding it.

Yes of course you have a very valid point but why the risk over a coke This is a gray area I mean Alcohol is forbidden full stop doesn't say anything about small amounts Except maybe in extreme situations like Medecine of course.

Edit: @ M5 that is indeed very valid as well that is why more research must be done in this but I like my Coke :D

I don't think it is written that alcohol is forbidden, only something that can intoxicate is forbidden. Coke can not intoxicate you, no matter how much you can drink.

It's upto you to decide on, but if you were to avoid all alcohol then you should stop breathing as there are likely trace amounts in the atmosphere. I wouldn't recommend that though. If you understand the logic of being entitled to breath, as it won't intoxicate you, then the logic must follow that any drink is suitable as long as it can not intoxicate you in any quantity even if you tried.

No, it's just because in Mexico they use sugar, whereas everywhere else they use high fructose corn syrup because it's cheap.

Viva la mexico... :sly:

Sounds like an advert for yakkult(sp?).

I never realised the potential implications this may have for certain faith groups. Even if the amounts of alcohol are so minute that you can't become intoxicated from them, it may still cause a dilemna for people of a certain faith group. This, in my opinion is intolerable as it means that people of certain faiths may become disillusioned and believe that they have personally done wrong. I really hope this isn't the case.

Personally, the trace elements of alcohol don't make any difference to my lifestyle or any element of my psyche. But I feel bad for those who may have been inadvertently affected by this. I think those people deserve immediate clarification regardless of the fact that it is impossible to become intoxicated in this manner.

Well it is already guaranteed you can't become intoxicated because it is on sale and not classified as an alcoholic drink. Already covered by existing laws.

I know that. I was more concerned about members of certain faith groups who might see it differently. Personally I'm an agnostic and have always been aware of the natural alcohol fruit juices contain. An issue like this will have no impact on my life, but despite the fact that it is not classified as an alcoholic drink and it is impossible to become intoxicated with the minute quantity of alcohol contained in these drinks, some people will be upset over this. It would be better if some sort of statement was made by the corporation's involved imo.

Of course, this is all just speculation based on the claims of a photograph from 1979 of what someone said is the list of the core special ingredients.

Besides, didn't the recipe spring up a few years ago anyhow I recall? Or some claim to it?

Honestly, Wikileaks would be the most likely to reveal this, as rumor has it they apparently got the KFC secret recipe :P

The thing is many people over the years have claimed to have had the recipe and all Coke has to do, even if its exactly correct, is say that its totally wrong and a load of nonsense. Who you gonna believe?

I really want the Big Mac special sauce recipe!

Yes there is did you read the ingredients list?

Sorry man, I'm coming off a 3 day Coca-Cola binge and had just railed a hollywood before reading the list. I always call the guy for a can, but always end up picking up a 2 L.

The sad part is, it only makes me feel normal. :indiff:

This is true. I've heard Mexico has the best tasting coca-cola due to a different sugar used in the drink which can't be used in other countries due to health regulations.

This is false. Coca-cola is unlike pepsi in that they only sell their chemicals and don't actually make the drinks. Coke is bottled by independent bottlers that just mix sugar, water and coke flavor. The Coca Cola bottlers association in America uses corn syrup because the corn farmers influence is so powerful. Corn syrup is huge money here.

Pepsi does that pepsi throwback with sugar because they completely control all bottling operations. Independent coke bottlers don't have the luxury of making that choice if they're American.

Also the cocaine part is not crack rock but coca extract. It wouldn't be allowed to be sold unless it came from leaves that have had most of the cocaine already extracted. Think of decaf coffee... same thing.

This maybe a myth open for disapproval, BUT, I heard that America grants an exceptional permit for Coca-cola company to import Coca leaves, which would normally be illegal, and then process them in America which removes the cocaine aspect of the product leaving a coca extract flavour.

LA Times
Coca-Cola says 'This American Life' failed to reveal its secret formula

Relax, everyone. The radio program "This American Life" came close with its attempts to reveal Coca-Cola's top-secret formula. But the formula is still very much safe, and still very much top-secret.

So says Atlanta-based Coca-Cola. The soft-drink giant has been bombarded with queries, e-mails and phone calls from around the globe ever since this weekend's edition of "This American Life" that suggested that the top-secret Coca-Cola formula was not-so-secret at all and added that "...we think we may have located the recipe."
Referenced was a 1979 article that ran in the Atlanta Journal Constitution about the discovery of a pharmacist's formula for a cola drink. That article has long led to widespread speculation that the recipe was the basis -- if not the actual formula -- for Coca-Cola.

Kerry Tressler, a Coca-Cola spokeswoman, said the media relations department came to work Monday morning to the flood of media requests. "It has been quite a day," she said. She added with amusement that many of the media requests seemed to assume that the formula had been revealed and were waiting for a capitulation from the company or a confirmation of the "real" formula.

"Our formulation is our company’s most valued trade secret, and we will not be coming forward with that formula," Tressler said with a laugh. She said that there is always media interest in Coca-Cola -- "It’s one of the world's most valuable trademarks. People are very interested in that" -- but that this latest flare-up was completely unexpected. (We haven't been able to get through to "This American Life" for a comment, and there were problems with the website throughout the day Tuesday, leading to further speculation that it crashed because of all the interest.)

As the radio program tried to recreate Coca-Cola for audiences, a historian for the soft-drink giant put it to a taste test and confirmed that it was not, in fact, "the real thing," Tressler said. That didn't seem to stop the media from going into overdrive about whether the secret was out. There was such a flurry of interest that it all led to a second wave -- stories about all the stories. Yes, I plead guilty.

Tressler said that from her point of view, the interest couldn't have come at a better time: "This is our 125th anniversary. So it’s an exciting time for our company."

She did confirm the legend of the formula -- that it actually exists on paper, secure in a bank vault. As to rumors that only two people at the company know the formula at any given time? Well, that might be exaggerated. "We cannot confirm the number of people who are familiar with the formulation, but it is only a small handful," she said.

Well that's that then...

As for the different tastes all over the world its true because in the UK for example higher sugar levels are permitted than in mainland Europe so Coke will taste different, its also why Cadbury's chocolate in the EU tastes different.

People say it tastes different in a can to a bottle for example, but I guess it's the same stuff.

I personally really like the taste of coke from the tap at pubs.

I agree, it tastes great from a keg at pubs and I've never had a glass of it taste like that at home. Maybe its flatter or had more time to settle which makes the difference compared to a litre bottle.

A little bit ot, but red bull cola is a nice alternative. I have a friend who's 39 (i'm 23) and he say's that's the way cola used to taste in the uk. He's positive that it used to be alot nicer and tasted just like red bull cola does now. Any truth to that?

It doesn't come out of a keg

The pub buys it in boxes of syrup

These boxes get connected to a post mix machine where the syrup gets mixed with water & gas in a specific ratio.

This machine is maintained by Coca Cola people & if there is anything wrong with the machine or your drinks not tasting right they will come out - usually within a few hours & put it right. Thats why it usually tastes so good in pubs

:)

I like Coca Cola quite a lot here in Australia, but when we travel to the US and Canada it is different and I don't really like it there and drink something else. This puzzled my father years ago so he contacted Coca Cola about this and they told him the recipe is the same but local waters are different which cause taste changes through different regions.

I have noticed Coca Cola tastes different to me within even Australia, I always check the bottling plant on the label when I notice taste variation and it is always a non local plant (usually promotional special bottles our local plant didn't make). We do have slightly different water (chemical levels) in different states.

I've got to ask. Why are you drinking coke at a pub? As a mixer, driving maybe?

Yes. In terms of taste, Coca Cola imported from Mexico tastes way better than the stuff here in Canada. Maybe because it's in a glass bottle instead of a plastic aswell?

Dr. pepper you will see in the article, refused to even comment. At least Coke said it only had trace amounts of the compound...

I've got another month and a bit till I'm 18 ;)

Although I have to say alot of bars and fast food restaurants serve Pepsi, and that tastes really nice there, but if I ever buy a bottle I find it revolting. It's very odd.

Well I need to read better :dunce:. So does every pop have some thing that will cause cancer or other disease?

You should avoid any drink that contains both citric acid and sodium benzoate , as they react and create a carcinogen.

That's pretty cool, I never knew it came as a syrup, no wonder it tastes so good in pubs because its literally freshly made there and then!

Both reasons but sometimes I just want a Coke!, if I'm driving I don't drink a drop of alcohol.

Robin.

That rules out a lot of drinks. So my relative who died of cancer, a very healthy but did drink a lot of pop... the cancer could have been caused by it? Is cancer in some way a hereditary disease? Because if so, I'm rather unlucky and...

Too many things can cause cancer. Best not to worry about it too much. I avoid some chemicals like the ones I mentioned.

It does, a co-worker of mine has a brother working for a coke bottler and he said that the bottles are washed by a composite of substances which slightly alter the taste, just before the envasement.

And I do find differences when comparing canned coke to bottled coke, the latter always tastes better.
