Colin McRae Rally

I had a go on Colin McRae Rally this week (it's an old disk so some of the stages don't load any more so I can't do a championship) and I've found that my favourite car is the Toyota. I'm sure the Subaru is quicker but the Corolla just feels more consistent and easier to drive which is important with how twitchy driving with the D-Pad is. I doubt I ever drove it when I first played 17 years ago because I was such a massive Tommi Makinen and Mitsubishi fan.

I was the same with McRae when I was younger but since growing up I have an undying love for Classic Fords so I couldn't pick anything other than the Escort! :)

i was 11 when playing this, it was hard as hell but i have such good memories with it. As i still have my original copy for ps1, i played it few years ago on ps3 and finally finish it. When i was young i couldn't make it through Corsica.

Back then i have to say games were really rewarding. Now it's all easy and unlocked from the start.

Can anyone help me with Colin Mcrae Rally 04 for Xbox? I am having a very difficult time with the Australia Rally with the Subaru. I want to finish at least 2nd in the championship to unlock the Ford RS200.

As fun as this was...my heart still belongs to Mobil 1 British Rally Championship. I'd love to see the Indonesian Rally put back into a quality game sometime though.

Very underrated game IMO. CMR has better physics, but Mobil 1 Rally nailed the narrowness and challenge of actual rally stages.

It also has heaps of interesting and less known kit cars. Seat Ibiza FTW! :D

I adored pounding around in one of the small starter Skodas...and the biggest thing for me was the length of the stages. Some stages took 10-20 minutes to complete and back then your computer would have to reload halfway through so you'd get a hiccup mid-run and crash. :D

Also very unforgiving with damage etc. I do wish Dirt Rally would bring more of that back.

Exactly. It captures the magic and actual feel of being in a rally, instead of just being another racing game that happens to be offroad.

Unfortunately with new graphics it becomes exponentially harder to create long 10 minute stages with lots of variety. So sadly I don't think we'll see anything quite like Mobil 1 again, at least not an AAA title.

That's why I got a little excited about Dirt Rally...with decidedly last gen graphics, I was hoping for more 9+ minute stages. Sadly the number and types of stages are a huge disappointment for me in that game. I'd have vastly preferred two rallies with a dozen unique stages to the five+ rallies with 4 stages...reversed...and added together.

In fact I would have supported (rare for me to say this) a Dirt Rally game where you pay DLC ($10-15 a pop) for each large rally if it included 3-4 cars and a genuine 12-14 stage rally. I think Dirt Rally is going to be "the good game that could have been great". Sounds like they're impressed with the response...so I do hope Dirt Rally 2 is a possibility.

In my opinion, the best way is to dial back graphics a bit (maybe between PS2-PS3 level, better than RBR, but slightly worse than DR) to make modelling easier and quicker. Get the base physics engine perfect as number 1 priority. Then make the game openly moddable and just let the community grow the game by itself.

RBR is very difficult to mod, but people have added hundreds of new cars and stages over the years of every rally imaginable. Similarly rFactor even though it's not specifically a rally game, people have added lots of rally and touge content. There's more content created than you can ever hope to play, so you will never get bored.
