College Football 2006 - Week 7: Judge, Jury, and Execution

This is Week 7 of college football. Teams that will play their seventh game and lost only once have a chance to be Bowl Eligible. In addition, conference play is heating up. The toughest part of the season is when you play in conference. It means that you will play football against tougher teams than playing against 1-A cupcakes and 1-AA to 3 competitors.

* I went into "Rapid Fire" when I seen an interesting score I didn't pick up. It was a Sun Belt game as the University of North Texas did something that hasn't been done in a few years- go into SEVEN Overtimes! The Mean Green won that home game against lowly Florida International. The last 7OT game involved Mississippi and some other school maybe two or three years ago. I'm actually going to research what game has had the most overtimes in history. I have a feeling a game may have went well over 7.

* The state of Kentucky has a Top 10 team that was bumped up to 7th Overall. The Louisville Cardinals are now 7th ranked. You can damn well bet that Louisville wants in on a BCS Bowl. Their only real competition is if West Virginia knocks off Louisville on November 2nd. Anything can happen through the course of a season in ANY sport. Who would have thought that Winthrop would beat Tennessee in March Madness? Or that George Mason went to their first tournament and made a Final Four? Or that Iowa would lose to Northwestern State? And in football, who would have thought that New Hampshire would beat Northwestern? Portland State beating New Mexico? Montana State beating Colorado? And just this past weekend- Arkansas beating Auburn or Louisiana-Lafayette beating Houston? So ANYTHING can happen between now and that judgmental game against West Virginia.





WEEK 7 - SUNDAY SYNOPSIS
A 1-A match took place in the Buckeye State as two MAC conference foes took each other on.





DIVISION 1-A GAMES
"Is it Sunday Yet?" Northern Illinois at Miami University
We have Sunday Night Football for you. This is a treat for you if you don't care about Sunday Night Football on NBC. More people want to see the Pittsburgh Steelers take go southwest to meet the San Diego Chargers than Northern Illinois meet Miami University. True football fans will check into both games and alternate between watching them. So let's meet Northern Illinois first. I once came across a student that was from Northern Illinois. I don't know too much on Northern Illinois. I don't even know their fight song since EA Sports' NCAA Football series can't pick up their fight song. The Huskies of DeKalb, IL (around the greater Chicago area) are heading into Oxford, OH to meet Miami University. This weekend was a good start tht ended badly. Miami University opened up their beautiful new hockey arena. This arena was the home field of the Ice Breaker Tournament in NCAA Hockey. Miami University won their game against the (non-football) Denver Pioneers to advance to the Championship Game against (non-football) Vermont. And if Vermont's male basketball team is any indication, anything is possible. And in so, the Vermont Catamounts upset Miami University's #8 hockey team to win the tournament. Now the Miami University Redhawks are hoping their football team doesn't lose like their hockey team did on Saturday. Put away the stick and puck and get some shoulder pads and a pigskin. We're footballin', baby! And so was Northern Illinois as they led 7-3 over Miami University after one quarter. Miami went for a fake field goal after cashing in an 80-something yard touchdown pass to the bank. Miami trailed 10-9 to NIU after the failed pass for two. Northern Illinois continued to lead 17-12 even after Miami University connected a late field goal after some horrid red zone offense late in the first half. With a chance to win in the proverbial Two Minute Warning, Miami failed to execute a long pass on 4th and 9. So this has been sort of a bad weekend for Miami University athletics. (28-25; Northern Illinois)

--- SOMETHING I NOTICED IN THE NFL ---
At times, I've noticed that when some teams score touchdowns, a band plays. It's especially true with the Washington Redskins. I think the song is called "All Hail Maryland" or something like that. I still like the collegiate atmosphere better. I think it's a little out of place in the pro game since I'm so used to college. I think I even heard a band play when I seen last Sunday night's game with the Chicago Bears at home.



--- MORE ANTI-HOUSTON BIAS ---
Mario Willams of the Houston Texans picked up his first sack against the Miami Dolphins. It wasn't as much publicity as Reggie Bush getting his first rushing touchdown against Tampa Bay. Nit-pickers would say that Mario Williams got his first big stat before Reggie Bush. Still, not many celebrated. I know Houston isn't the greatest team in the NFL, but at least show him some love if Reggie Bush is going to get this kind of love. Come the f:censored: on.


--- GEORGE MASON: 1-AA SCHOOL? ---
Last night, I reported a game involving Clark Atlanta and George Mason. The reason why I listed that as a 1-AA game was because the site I use to cover Division 2 games ( http://www.d2football.com ) labeled George Mason as a 1-AA school. If an NCAA team plays AT a non-NCAA school, I usually don't cover them. My focus has been on home teams. It's what I use to show what Division game it actually is. But no, George Mason does not have a full-on, NCAA team. Not even their athletics website mentions them having a football team. So George Mason is one of only a few non-football schools that doesn't have an NCAA football team. The other one I know well of is Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI. George Mason is looking to perhaps get a 1-AA team set up. Old Dominion is looking to return to football two or three years from now as a member of the CAA.

Of course, the CAA will sponsor football as this will be the last year of Atlantic 10 football. The Atlantic 10 will no longer sponsor football after this season. History was made as one of its own A-10 schools, New Hampshire, had David Ball break Jerry Rice's record for most touchdown receptions in a college career. Most Atlantic-10 schools don't play in the Atlantic-10 for basketball. Current football and basketball A-10 schools include Massachusetts, Richmond, and Rhode Island. Other A-10 schools with football are The College of William and Mary, Hofstra, James Madison, Northeastern, Towson, Delaware, Maine, and Villanova. The A-10 participants in football in basketball include these CAA members in basketball: Towson, William and Mary, Delaware, James Madison, and Hofstra. The remainder of the A-10 football squads play in the following conferences in basketball: Villanova (Big East), Maine (America East), and Northeastern (America East(?)).

COLLEGE FOOTBALL STUDENT LOUNGE

* UCLA's QB will be out 4-6 weeks because of a torn MCL.

* Kentucky will not have Rafael Little when they play this Saturday at LSU (more on this game later in this post). Little has a knee injury.


I personally feel much more comfortable talking college football than college basketball. Sure, I'll do both of them, but I feel more comfortable with talking college football for one big reason- the ability to talk about the games. I want to establish a small community. I don't think I actually get a chance to discuss college basketball as I can with college football. But let me move on to other issues.

* I don't know about Kentucky this Saturday. This Saturday is a double whammy for the Wildcats. First off, they got Louisiana State this Saturday. Second off, it's AT LSU. Kentucky's going to go right into the SEC's Death Valley to take on THEIR cats- the Bayou Bengals- the LSU Tigers. Bring on the boudain and gumbo because we're going to have some Louisiana football in the SEC! As I said, the South Carolina game could have gone either way for the Kentucky Wildcats. But this is one of the games I don't see Kentucky winning. But if Arkansas can beat Auburn on the road, can Kentucky beat LSU on the road?I'm giving Kentucky a 30% chance of winning in Baton Rouge. It's going to be tough even for a team that isn't the flagship of SEC football.





JOHN'S EXTRAS

--- BEEN THINKING ABOUT HOW FOX WOULD DO WITH BCS BOWL COVERAGE ---
FOX signed a deal long ago to have live broadcasts of BCS Bowl Action including the National Championship game. When I think of seeing most championships on TV, I'm normally thinking about the ESPN and ABC networks. But if you notice, there's basically no more ABC Sports. They have to rely on the ESPN networks. It concerns me with FOX because some of college sports' most wonderful voices won't be there to call games on the FOX networks. Who are some of my favorite announcers in college football? You got Brad Nessler, Brent Musburger, and the great (now retired) Keith Jackson. Other personalities I've liked include Kirk Herbstreit, Lee Corso, and maybe even Rod Gillmore. Don't know what kinds of talent we'll get in the announcer booth when the BCS games take place. Maybe one I've heard of before was Joel Osment(?) who does college football coverage on FSN with the Big XII. He also did Houston Texans preseason football coverage. Pretty nice voice.

--- "COCKY" FEATURED ON MONDAY NIGHT RAW'S FAMILY REUNION ---
The University of South Carolina (the team that beat Kentucky on Saturday night) hosted the Monday Night RAW Family Reunion. Mentioned earlier in the show was USCar's mascot, Cocky. Unfortunately, he didn't show up. But it was a joke for Vince McMahon from D-Generation X. Couldn't stop laughing! Cocky didn't actually come out to greet the Gamecock fans. I guess Cocky didn't want to taste a steel chair or get a Tombstone Piledriver. And if you notice, Johnathan Coachman is part of the Raw brand, but be also does commentary for College Sports TV. But DX all the way, baby! And Candice Michelle is freaking hot! Also nice to see Rowdy Roddy Piper, I.R.S. (Irwin R. Schyster), the "Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase, and Arn Anderson with Ric Flair.



--- GOOGLE BUYS YOUTUBE? ---
YouTube has been bought by Google. This buying deal makes Google one hell of a deal. In its eight-year history, this is the largest purchase Google has pulled off. So you can enjoy searching websites without a lot of bullcrap in searching. No ads saying something like "Strike Oil and get a $500 Gas Card" or anything like that. Then YouTube has all the "fanboys" that think they are invincible and above God in doing stupid ass stunts that people seem to find entertaining and cool. _



--- LOVE OF NIGHT TIME ---
I don't know about you, but I love nighttime. You could say that I'm easily fascinated by the celestial theater (the stars at night) when it's clear. I think there's a certain magic to the night air. What I seem to love most about nighttime is a city all lit up beautifully and the stars shining. Some night games show pictures of the moon in the sky when it's clear or visible. You probably won't be able to see many stars in the sky if you're on campus or around city lights. I usually have great interest in Astronomy. I even took an Astronomy class before. If you're going to college or in college and need a science to be involved in, try Astronomy. You begin to really appreciate what deep space is like as well as learn facts about our planets (I didn't say "nine planets" because of the "controversial" decision about Pluto). There aren't too many points in Houston where you can enjoy the full beauty of the night. My first encounter with a load of stars in the sky was back in 1994 when I was a Fifth Grader. I was on this field trip to a camp for a four-day stay. The first night, I saw so many stars in the sky. It was so beautiful. Then unfortunately that night and almost all of the second day, rain soaked up the experience. Nighttime is beautiful. I'm sometimes enticed to find websites with pictures of all sorts of phenomena. One of those I found is { http://www.skychasers.net }. Lord knows I may ever see auroras and stuff here down south. You people up north and even in Alaska (if we have any GTPlanet people from Alaska) should be enjoying this kind of stuff. One last thing I heard about Alaska- an AOL friend of mine in Anchorage, Alaska talked about what it's like when it's the Winter Solstice. She told me that there are over five hours of daylight up there! Can you imagine five hours of daylight? If that was the hours of daylight at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the majority of the race would be at night! But of course, the race is run in June where you encounter the Summer Solstice. Anyhow, I have a great love of nighttime.



--- EVER IMAGINE MORE COLLEGE FOOTBALL IN HAWAII? ---
America's 50th State is Hawaii. But of any NCAA football affiliation, only the University of Hawaii has football. They play at Aloha Stadium, which serves as the home of the NFL Pro Bowl game. It's also home of the Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl. ESPN always has some fun with any NCAA action in Hawaii. The Maui Invitational is next month in college basketball as teams play at Chaminade University's court. Only NCAA school with football is the University of Hawaii. But there are about three other Hawaii schools in Division 2 basketball. In Division 2, you have the Pacific West Conference. The PWC is where Chaminade plays its basketball in. There are three other Hawaii schools in the NCAA and they are: BYU-Hawaii (home of the Seasiders), Hawaii Pacific (home of the Sea Warriors), and the University of Hawaii-Hilo (home of the Vulcans). The only PWC school not in Hawaii is Notre Dame de Namur. Notre Dame de Namur (NDNU) can be found in Belmont, CA, and home of the Argonauts.

I doubt we will see a Kentucky win this weekend. Kentucky had a winning record just a week ago and now they are at .500. This will take them back to a losing record, but 3 of the next 4 games should be wins. I think that after we are 6-5 and we should forfeit to Tennessee and save ourselves for the Liberty Bowl. Honestly, no one wants to see that pummeling, aside from Tennessee fans. Maybe I just don't want to hear that friggin song.

My hope is that Little will get well quicker than predicted (a month).

I want to talk about another player right now, Dicky Lyons, Jr. He is a Sophmore and already has 7 TDs this season, more than any other player, and equal to the total rushing TDs for the season. He is a key player when it comes to the red zone. Keenan Burton makes big yardage plays, but Dicky can always find his way to the end zone.

He is still young as a sophmore and it makes me wonder what he will be like two seasons from now. Keenan Burton will have graduated and so it looks like Dicky will be the number one WR for the team. If Coach Brooks can build a better offense in another two years what will this kid be able to do?

One thing I wonder: Dicky has severe ADD. He is in the center of anything going on with the team and is always acting goofy off the field. Adult ADD has another symptom called hyperfocus. Once the patient gets a focus on something that excites them (raising dopamine, which is low in ADD patients) they can't stop focusing on it. Is this why whenever he gets the ball and a chance to run with it he turns it into a touchdown or something close? Has his ADD allowed him to just see the way to the end zone in a way other players don't? I just thought it was a curious thing to ponder.

One interesting side note: He didn't even show an interest in football until high school, nor was he even aware of his father's history as one of Kentucky's best receivers. Once he did get into football he always went by Richard Lyons, so as to avoid being in his father's shadow. UK Offensive Coordinator Joker Phillips told him that if he plays for Kentucky he is Dicky Lyons, Jr. Good or bad he now is in his father's spotlight, but it has gotten him recognition that would otherwise have been missed. It is now believed that they are the only father-son duo to both have 80+ yard receiving touchdowns (Lyons, Jr - 80 yards; Lyons, Sr - 92 yards).


As the season progresses I am just finding this kid more and more amazing.

--- MY VIEW OF WASHINGTON ---
I think the University of Washington is doing better after having some down time. The Huskies consistently made Bowl Games in addition to getting a share of the National Championship with Miami in 1990 (or 1991?). Washington went 1-10 two years ago, then 2-9(?) last year. Now they are about 4-2. I got respect for the U. of Washington. I like their fight song as well. Bow Down to Washington! Unfortunately in Los Angeles, Washington bowed down to the USCal Trojans. I'll be happy for Washington if they make a Bowl Game. Washington has had some bad down time after being nicely ranked. They play in a very beautiful setting at Husky Stadium. Little known fact- in "NCAA March Madness 2005," you can't make your own basketball team like in March Madness 2004. So I had to pick a team to call my favorite team. Guess which team that was? Washington. I do hope that Washington's men's team can return to March Madness and maybe make a Sweet 16 appearance or higher. And if they somehow explode in this nation of basketball, they may be like Washington's women's volleyball team- National Champions.



--- MICHIGAN AND MICHIGAN STATE INJURY REPORT ---
Wide Receiver Mario Manningham of #4 Michigan will miss Michigan's Saturday game at Penn State. He has arthoscopic knee surgery to undergo. He's out indefinitely (SOURCE: ESPNEWS).

As for Michigan State, Michigan State will miss their WR, Matt Trannon. He's out with an ankle injury. Michigan State has Ohio State. Any hope Michigan State has of beating Ohio State and stopping their losing skid has been diminished a bit. These aren't happy times for the Spartans. They lost against Notre Dame and Michigan in two straight weeks. Now, they may go with three-straight losses as they are EASILY underdogs against the big boys from Columbus.



--- EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT THE "M" IN UDM? ---
I'm talking about the non-football school known as the University of Detroit. The official name of the U. of Detroit is the University of Detroit-Mercy. It's been said that the University of Detroit (home to the Titans) purchased and merged with Mercy College in Detroit. Mercy College was established in 1941 So since 1990, it's officially known as the University of Detroit Mercy. But it's still acceptable to call it the University of Detroit.



--- WILL FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL AND/OR FLORIDA ATLANTIC EVER MAKE A BOWL OR WIN THE SUN BELT? ---
Florida what? Same question many of you would ask. These two schools bursted onto the scene back around 2004 or 2005. They are members of the Sun Belt conference. Florida Atlantic unleashed a wicked winning season despite not making a Bowl Game. Florida International has yet to have a winning season. And it looks like neither team will pick up much winning especially taking on conference teams like North Texas, Middle Tennessee State, Troy, and teams like that. Florida Atlantic's biggest win was in their 1-A debut when they upset the University of Hawaii.



--- FORD RECALL INFORMATION ---
The latest round of Ford recalls range from 2005-2006 Montegos and Five-Hundred models. The problem with them is that they have door hatches that may allow water to seep into the cabin. Also on Ford's recall list are 2005-2006 Ford Escape Hybrids. They have some driveshaft problems. Ford talks about you should send them to a Ford dealer for either replacements or whatever.



--- GREAT NORTHWEST ATHLETIC CONFERENCE DROPS FOOTBALL ---
The Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) dropped football. Only four schools sponsor football in the GNAC. Those include Central Washington, Humboldt State, Western Oregon, and Western Washington. Non-football members include the Alaska-Anchorage Seawolves (imagine NCAA football in Alaska!), the Nanooks of Alaska-Fairbanks, the Crusaders of Northwest Nazarene, the Saints of St. Martin's, the Redhawks of Seattle, and the Falcons of Seattle Pacific.

Chances are that Louisiana (I mistakenly typed "Louisville" instead of "Louisiana") State has the bigger advantage on paper. Kentucky knows they are playing in a tough conference against top flight football teams. LSU is one of those powerhouse SEC teams. They are one of four in the conference. The others include Tennessee, Florida, and Georgia.

I think that without Dicky Lyons the wildcats would have a tough time as the defenses could focus on Keenan Burton. Burton has speed and can break free in one-to-one coverage and get some huge yards, but Lyons manages to get the scores and some how slip around defenders for scores. I think he allows the Kentucky offense to keep the defenses spread out as they realize that he is a playmaker. Too many teams underestimate him as a sophmore and they pay. After that first time though they stay on him and then Burton can break free.

If Kentucky didn't have Lyons Burton would rarely get open and we would be struggling. A great example is the Ole Miss game. After Lyons got his first TD he walked off the field telling Burton he was going to get two more. Whether he meant it or not didn't matter, Ole Miss's defense wasn't going to give him the chance and Burton got some good yards and the run was opened up. Lyons did score a second TD by out maneuvering his defenders in the end zone, but the defense was working hard to stop his cocky attitude and they had to pay for it elsewhere.

While Ole Miss isn't a good team, their lack of ability makes Lyons' effect easy to see. When he isn't making a play his presence opens up other opportunities for the offense. At this point he helps the offense by just being on the field. Something I noticed going through the individual game stats: When Dicky Lyons scores Kentucky wins. When he doesn't score Kentucky loses. Judging by that I would say that he is necessary to get Kentucky to a bowl game. Future defenses should pay attention, shutting down Lyons seems to be the key to shutting down Kentucky.

Of course if Kentucky's defense was better then Lyons wouldn't be necessary, but you can't have everything I guess. A Kentucky complaint since the Hal Mumme days has always been on defense; It doesn't matter how many points you score if your opponent is scoring just as much.


As for Kentucky's chances at beating LSU in Baton Rouge (spoken with a heavy Cajun accent, even in my head) I would say it is about 20%. I'm being generous, because I figure it is more like 15%, but I always throw in 5% for an upset factor. It's my way of never underestimating an underdog.

WEEK 7 - THURSDAY SYNOPSIS
Three 1-A blowouts occured including an upset loss. The closest game was a rivalry matchup in the Mountain West. Even though no Division 1-AA home games were reported, the biggest shock in Division 2 was with a Top 5 team losing on the road in a heartbreaker. Every home team won this Thursday with the exception of one neutral turf game.





DIVISION 1-A GAMES
"Fly Zone" #22 Virginia Tech at Boston College
The biggest match tonight will pit two top-flight ACC teams. Are you ready to take in this bad boy? Get ready for some throat-grabbing football, folks! Virginia Tech is far removed from Michael and Marcus Vick under center. They came off a saddening defeat to Georgia Tech on the road. Now, the Hokies must fly their way into Chestnut Hill, MA... home to Boston College. I've always called Boston College as the nation's largest college. I mostly think of very small schools when I think of a school with "college" designation like Lafayette, Providence, William and Mary, and stuff like that. But this college is Boston College. You call it Boston College instead of Boston because there are two schools in the greater Boston area- one that's had football for a while, and the other who hasn't had football in a long while (Boston University). The BC Eagles are ready for football in an AD world. But are they ready for VT? Let's see! Herbstreit mentioned that Michael Vick was perhaps one of the best for the Hokies when he was in college. But since then, there's been a lot of frustration and such since his arrival. You want an example of complete discombobulation? Two VT players had some arguments as this game was getting out of hand. At 4:50 left in the game, a controversial call was made as a BC player bobbled a pass, had the ball dropped as a VT player called it. But, the ref called it a fumble as Virginia Tech tried to quickly get back on the board. Desperation, per chance? Afterwards as Boston College was trailing 20-3, they had a punt near the end zone as the punter couldn't get the ball leading to a safety. Kirk Herbstreit was pretty vocal on what F. Beamer was going through. I'm going to be honest. I expected to see a closer game than what just happened. This result was worse Illinois beating Michigan State. There are going to be LOTS of tape studying at Virginia Tech before their next game. Pitiful. I wonder how my buddy JFM92_GTRacer feels about his Hokies. (22-3; BOSTON COLLEGE) *most disappointing loss nominee* *upset!*

We have two teams going at it tonight on ESPNU. It's Temple coming down to Clemson for a MAC vs. ACC battle. Let's meet Temple first. I profiled Temple University last week. Any real celebrity for Temple is John Carney(?). Ask for a celebrity playing for Temple, many would say that there is no talent with Temple. Temple lacks talent. They are the Savannah State of 1-A football. They are a horrible team that gets their asses pounded every day, every game. These are also Owls that can't stand losing all the time. Only Owls better than Temple is another crappy school, Houston's own Rice. Wins over Temple are almost automatic. They may be the next Central Florida in an effort to play in the MAC conference and lose every game. UCF had NO wins when they had their season in the MAC. Now they are in Conference USA and are money in every game. Will Temple follow suit? However, Clemson knows that NOTHING is automatic. And nothing is. What if a team scores a touchdown and shanks the kick for the P.A.T.? What if a field goal on the 1-yard line was shanked? So hardly ANYTHING is automatic even though it's a shame if you don't do the easy things. Or look in basketball- are free throws automatic? Are dunks? What about fast break points? No one is more knowledge than Clemson. The 1981 National Champion Tigers are ready to chomp up Temple and send them back to Philadelphia. Temple has now lost their 19th straight game. All Temple got was a touchdown and a field goal (2-point conversion failed on TD). Okay, Math majors. Divide Clemson's score from Temple's score and what do you get (hint, Clemson picked up SEVERAL of these tonight)? (63-9; Clemson) *ownage nominee*

"Top Guns" Colorado State at Air Force (RG: Battle for the Ram-Falcon Trophy)
Make ready for a Mountain West rivalry here. We have Colorado State playing at the second-best military academy football school- the United States Air Force Academy. This all takes place between two crosstown rivals in the city of Colorado Springs, CO. Or for you WWE fans, where SmackDown! star Bobby Lashley calls home. Let's meet the new king of football in Colorado- Colorado State. That's right. I said that Colorado is the new king of Colorado football this year. That's because this team can actually win games unlike their Big XII in-state rival. The Rams are looking to lock horns against a bunch of foes they hope to bring down to Earth- Air Force. We need people from the Air Force Academy to patrol our American skies in the face of airborne terror. We also need them to pilot state-of-the-art military aircraft like Harrier jets and the wicked Stealth Bombers. The Air Force recently retired the F14-Tomcat, but the Air Force Academy have players that will soar on the football field, in life, and as part of the United States Air Force if they decide to join the service. The Falcons have their afterburners on and look to land plenty of homing missles against their hated foes from Colorado State (as long as all the work is on the football field). This was the closest of the 1-A games. And in the end, the Ram-Falcon Trophy went to Air Force... at least until the next time they play. (24-21; AIR FORCE)

"Static Cling" Southern Utah at Florida Atlantic
Southern Utah of the Great West met Florida Atlantic of the Sun Belt. I say that the Sun Belt is a 1-AA gateway into 1-A football. I usually say that they are the lowest talents in 1-A. I don't mean that in any disrespect. The Sun Belt is a quality conference, but it's that there isn't as much depth. It's sort of a little-known, little-cared conference. But I'll give them some love becaues they need some. Florida Atlantic University is one of the youngest 1-A schools. They operate out of Boca Raton, FL. I think Boca Raton is about 25 miles northeast of Fort Lauderdale. The Owls ripped a wicked feat in their debut season- about 9 or 10 wins including an upset win against Hawaii. Since then, they've had losing seasons. Maybe a win against Southern Utah will change things. Southern Utah University (SUU) is part of the football-only Great West Conference. It is one of a few football conferences you won't hear about in basketball. Other examples include the Gateway Football Conference and the Pioneer Football Conference. There are even a few more in other NCAA Divisions. The Southern Utah Thunderbirds share no affinity for the wonderful Ford from the 1950s that saw VERY LITTLE sales progress since 2002 or 2003. But they do have a passion for playing football and winning games. Sadly, they didn't win against a much more powerful Florida Atlantic. FAU goes to 2-4 as SUU tanks to 3-4. (32-7; FLORIDA ATLANTIC)

Two F2 Tornadoes were reported north of Columbus, OH. College sports fans know Columbus as the home of THE Ohio State University. Homes were damaged in Columbus, Ohio as a result of the F2 Tornadoes. No damage to Ohio State University (that I know of) was reported. No injuries were reported as this was yet another wild weather experience in over a week in Columbus.



--- WHAT 1-AA SCHOOLS COULD PLAY ON A 1-A LEVEL? ---
The transistion through the divisions can be tough. The lowest division is Division 3. Division 3 normally consists of very small colleges and universities scattered throughout the nation. Here in Texas, we have Division 3 schools such as Trinity University in San Antonio. Teams that seem to win very much in one division kind of want to move up and try a newer division. That is what North Dakota State has done in its transition from Division 2 to Division 1-AA as they are undefeated (for what I know). Another D2 defectee is Central Arkansas, hoping to be part of the Southland Conference as they are hoping to be in for basketball and football. But who can play on a 1-A level? Not saying they'll beat Florida or Ohio State, but who can really compete on the 1-A level? For example, Western Kentucky is in the Sun Belt Conference in basketball. Any chance they could be good against Sun Belt FOOTBALL teams? Can they match up to North Texas, Troy, Middle Tennessee State, or any teams thereof? Or maybe look at New Hampshire (who beat Northwestern earlier this season). Can New Hampshire compete against some 1-A competition? To be honest, I don't know what conference they would fit in with if they played. They can't do the Big East because I don't think New Hampshire would be THAT talented on a Division 1-A scale. Maybe they'd fit in with the MAC conference. New Hampshire has a wonderful football program. The Wildcats could be a real surprise team in big-league college football. Georgia Southern has stumbled severely this season as of late. Between 1972 and 2002, guess how many championships in 1-AA Georgia Southern has won? They won over SIX national championships. They won 1-AA gold in 1985, 1986, 1989, 1990, 1999, and 2000 between 1972 and 2002. Now, they're under .500 in 1-AA after losing to North Dakota State last weekend. In this same range of years, they lost the championship game in 1988 and 1998. They lost to Furman in 1988 for the title, then lost in 1998 to Massachusetts. They can DEFINITELY play on a Division 1-A level if they can keep up the talent and step their game up. Do you think there are some 1-AA teams that COULD compete on a 1-A level even if they fall to teams from power conferences?

As someone who is one beer away from completing Old Chicago's World Beer Tour (110 different beers) I must comment on this. Chocolate beer is nothing new. In fact, this isn't the first beer to be called a chocolate lager. I have no clue why this beer, of all the others out there, has made the news. There are new and inventive beers coming out almost monthly, yet THIS is what we hear about? Miller paid someone in the press or released one of those paid news stories that appear like news but are actually just advertisements, a very questionable media practice.

Now, of the few chocolate beers I have tried only one has been good to me, but I am looking for beer. The sound of this new beer from Miller seems like my wife would like it. Of course, she likes Woodchuck Cider too, something which I only drink when I want to drink alcohol but don't feel like beer. Anyway, some of have been very watery and others have been thick to the point that you feel you must chew. There has only ever been one beer that includes chocolate that I have enjoyed Samuel Adams Black Lager. This beer has chocolate and caramel both and a low amount of hops but a good malt. I strongly recommend this if you want a chocolate (and caramel) flavor but still feel and taste like you are drinking beer. http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/35/21300/

The fact that I like this is funny as I am not a big Sam Adams fan because they use a lot of hops and I don't like a hoppy beer. When will Americans learn? The Germans use low amounts of hops and get more alcohol in their beer. This could also play into why my favorite Sam Adams beer is their Oktoberfest beer.

Anyway, if you are interested in trying the Black Lager it comes in the Sam Adams holiday pack that is only available at christmas. The Old Fezziwig and Holiday Porter are great as well (Mmmm, nutmeg beer).

While I'm here, I have a chance to talk about some of Thursday's games. I may have some non-Saturday scores that may make my Winners and Losers before Saturday ever gets here.

* How about the resurgence of Boston College? And as Boston College is getting better, Virginia Tech is heading down the tubes. From what I've seen, here is a great football team just plauged with some penalties as well as teammates having some hateful words for each other. Can you imagine discombobulation like this? It almost seems like a disappointing loss rather than an upset (it's still an upset).

* ESPNU viewers had a chance to see how bad Temple really is. Maybe Temple in football should do what Johns Hopkins does in men's lacrosse. Johns Hopkins is a Division 3 school, but they play Division 1 lacrosse. Perhaps Temple should stay in Division 1 for basketball, but go down to Division 2 or 3 in football. Temple is just a horrible team as they've lost 19 straight. How Temple was able to upset Virginia Tech years ago is beyond me.

* Speaking of ESPNU, this is officially Friday the 13th. ESPNU is showing a bunch of games that seem to be about stunning upsets. The one on at this time is a game in 2002 between Wisconsin at UNLV. Should make for some good television.

While the college basketball crew are having Midnight Madness, we got football on tap. Get ready for some more football before just about 70% or more colleges in America play football on Saturday. We're hooping things up on the football field with a matchup in the Sunshine State between a Big East school and a lame-duck-tuned-great-team. You may be watching Midnight Madness, your favorite primetime shows and movies, WWE Friday Night SmackDown!, or you can be watching great college football action. In which direction will you swinging?





WEEK 7 - FRIDAY SYNOPSIS
A once-prominent Big East school is slowly regaining their swagger as they headed down into Florida. The Ivy League wasn't short of talent either as two Ivy League teams clash in New Jersey. Last night's Virginia Tech loss shows that ANYTHING can happen.





DIVISION 1-A GAMES
"Come Get Your Heisman Love" #?? Pittsburgh at UCF
The Steel City Kitties are ready to bounce on some golden metal. So let's see who was game enough in this game. One GTPlanet member questioned why Pittsburgh QB Tyler Palko isn't getting any Heisman love. Maybe Pittsburh can get some Heisman respect with a career day in Orlando. The Pittsburgh Panthers excel in football and basketball. Surely their basketball team is back in Pittsburgh warming up the crowds when basketball season rolls around. The Pittsburgh footballers aren't thinking of basketball right now because they want their football team to go to a Bowl Game at least. Preventing their chances is Central Florida. The University of Central Florida welcomed this Big East power to Orlando. I start my day with two tablets of Vitamin C, then drinking orange juice to get my Vitamin C fix for the day. The Citrus Bowl is full of talent that takes their Vitamin C and enjoys their orange juice every day. After all, we are in Florida, right? The Golden Knights will feel like platinum if they upset the blue and gold of Pittsburgh. Will we see a big win, or a critical upset? Let's find out together. After one half of play, Pitt put up the most amount of points in the First Half as they put up basketball numbers on UCF. You think Louisville racks up points? Look at this Pittsburgh performance. They almost went up 41-0 until they didn't connect an easy field goal in the Red Zone. Afterwards, Pittsburgh probably could have made it 80-something to 0 or beat UCF down like Oklahoma beat Texas A&M 77-0 a few years ago. Only a consolation touchdown was what UCF got. Nobody goes away empty-handed, seems like. (52-7; Pittsburgh)





DIVISION 1-AA GAMES
"What Can Brown University do for you?" Brown at #24 Princeton
I'll be honest with you. I think this is my first-ever Ivy League game I've seen. This is between Brown University of Providence, RI, taking on Princeton University in New Jersey. The smarties of the Ivy League can play some sports. Let's see if football is the cup of tea for these boys. Let's meet Brown. What can Brown do for you? Brown can triple option on the football field and full court press you on the hardwood. The Brown Bears reside in Providence, RI. The only other Division 1 school in Providence is non-football school, Providence College of Big East basketball. The Rhode Islanders made a "short" trip to New Jersey to meet Princeton. Princeton is one of college football's oldest teams in having played against Rutgers about 136 years ago. Princeton still carries the competitive fire of football in the 19th Century as they do here in the 21st Century. But can the Tigers work magic at home against Brown? This game was on ESPNU for Friday night football. The teams traded field goals in the First Half. Afterwards, the Tigers shown WHY they are a Top 25 team in 1-AA as they took it to poor old Princeton, shutting them out in the Second Half. (17-3; #24 PRINCETON)

This is where I usually like to talk about college football or even just about anything.

--- FRIDAY THE 13TH ---
Do you believe in superstitions? What about walking underneath a ladder? Opening an umbrella inside a building? Breaking a mirror? A usual superstition I have is that beautifully clear days outside sort of results in a disappointing day. I'm not overly concerned with superstitions to be honest.



--- KANSAS' SELF-IMPOSED PROBATION ---
The following is old news. The University of Kansas has had its probation extended one extra season. In effect, Kansas will be pretty much banned from postseason play. They will lose up to three football scholarships and one basketball sponsorship. This probation period extends all the way into the 2008-2009 season. Ouch.



--- NCAA HOCKEY KICKS OFF ---
One of the marquee matches in the 2006-2007 season of collegiate hockey consisted of a match between Wisconsin hosting North Dakota. The Badgers are the defending hockey champions going up against a team trying to appeal their hostile nickname- the North Dakota Fighting Sioux. The game ended as the #5 Fighting Sioux shocked the #2 Wisconsin Badgers in a 3-2 Overtime win. Defending champs in trouble as Wisconsin's football team will meet Minnesota to play for Paul Bunyan's Axe.

Other winners include (but not limited to) Miami of Ohio, Michigan, Army, Massachusetts, Quinnipiac, Ferris State, and Bowling Green.

--- KIND WORDS FOR HOUSTON ---
I am a native of Houston, TX. I'm basically proud of the job the Houston Cougars are putting on right now. It's been wonderful to see Houston get some national attention for the first time in some time. I would love to see the day when the University of Houston gets back into a form of dominance (or at least nationwide respect) like back in the day. Maybe back to the days when Andre Ware picked up the Heisman in 1989 for the Coogs. I've always seen the University of Houston as the flagship team representing America's Space City. Well, except in baseball considering how well Rice has been playing in baseball. Now the only thing I hope for is for either or both Houston Cougar basketball teams (men and/or women) make the NCAA tournament. The women may have a pretty tough time considering their non-conference schedule for the upcoming season playing against teams like Duke, Texas Tech, Michigan State(?), Colorado and that sort of thing. The ladies are going to have it tough on the hardwood this season.



--- "FRIDAY" IS HINES WARD'S FAVORITE MOVIE? ---
Ever noticed the Friday commercials for Monday Night Football? It's said that Hines Ward's favorite movie is "Friday." It's one of my favorite movies as well. It is a classic movie for me. Even more of a classic series for me. Maybe Ward and I should see Friday together and enjoy it. Hah!



--- HONDA RIDGELINE: BEST TAILGATING TRUCK? ---
There aren't too many fans of the Honda Ridgeline. I've seen a few of them on the road. And granted that it isn't like any of the purely American full-size trucks or even their own Japanese counterparts, it still seems to be highly practical. I'm not seriously sold on the Ridgeline even though I deeply admire Honda (just not for the reasons most people like to associate Honda to "ricing"). I guess what I can respect about the Ridgeline is that locable in-bed trunk. To put it nicely, it's sort of a van that thinks it's a truck. I've seen the lockable in-bed trunk as storage for ice and sodas for tailgate parties. Sources who say that the Ridgeline is wonderful for tailgating includes these two websites:

Him and his boys are ready to take on my hometown Houston Texans in Irving, TX. It will be a showdown of Texas' only two NFL teams even if people like to think of Houston as a 1-AA NFL team. T.O. complained of not getting the ball much this time.

It's time for Saturday football. How can you be a football fan if you don't care much for college? The best news is that the stars you're watching in college will likely be the next Super Bowl MVPs and Pro Bowl selections. You want to see stars of the future? You want college. In addition to stars of the future, there's just great football action. Who says you have to be a pro player and have a wickedly-high salary to be a great footballer?

Now when I came home from being on the road, I HAD to update my RTF file (since I don't trust DOC for something like message boards. Plus, I use WordPad)! GTPlanet, dig my flow.





WEEK 7 - SATURDAY SYNOPSIS
Remember Week 2? The second week of college football season 2006 saw plenty of close shaves by teams prospective of upsets. This time, at least three teams in 1-A have been upset by unranked teams. A few Rivalry Games took place including Minnesota at Wisconsin. Perhaps one of the biggest upsets of the day, however, was in Division 1-AA with a horrible loss at home. Some sad news occured in one game as one of the nation's biggest 1-A game breakers is apparentely out for the rest of the season. Plenty of upsets were scattered about in all four divisions of college football, but none bigger than a #1-ranked team falling in a blowout. Plenty of [COLOR="Magenta"[/COLOR] will be used to note upsets.

"Take a Bite Out of Gators" #2 Florida at #11 Auburn (GAME OF THE WEEK)
You don't hear or read too much on pro teams in the state of Alabama. You do have your share of quality college teams in Alabama, though. One of them will meet Florida in this big matchup. The Auburn Tigers can't believe they lost to Arkansas. To them, it was just one of those things that... just happened.

As Auburn missed a field goal, Florida took the ball from where Auburn's kick didn't make it. Then a monkeyshine occured- Florida basically right the ball RIGHT FREAKING AT AN AUBURN TIGER! Florida had no timeouts as the pick happened. Then Florida tried to get a rugby-style run to win the game much like the end of the controversial 2005 Alamo Bowl (Michigan vs. Nebraska). But in the end, Florida botched this play by fumbling it and having an Auburn player pick it up to add insult to injury. Florida is no longer an unbeaten team thanks to a botched passing scheme. I'm calling this more of an upset than a disappointing loss. Florida actually stayed in the game. Just not long enough. Losing streak over. Time to start a new winning streak. (27-17; AUBURN)


"NEVER NEVER NEVER EVER GIVE UP!" Kentucky at #14 LSU
Bring out the gumbo, boudain, and zydeco music because we have football in Louisiana! This is a battle between Kentucky and LSU in this SEC clash. Let's meet the home first. Louisiana State University is in Baton Rouge, LA. They are easily the best team in Louisana. They excel in just about ANY sport. Football. Basketball. Baseball. Track and Field. You name it, LSU's in it, and they are normally very successful. So is it any coincidence that the Tigers (also nicknamed the "Bayou Bengals") know how to throw down at home? LSU took that devastating loss to Florida last weekend. But considering how good Florida and LSU are, it could have gone either way on paper. LSU couldn't beat Florida. But at least they are playing an opponent they KNOW they can beat. Which leads to the away team. See the title of this entry? This was inspired by when Kentucky's basketball team trailed by miles over LSU. They came back to win in impressive fashion. After all, they've won seven championships, and the only team to have more is UCLA (by four or six, I believe). Kentucky had a great Midnight Madness on Friday. Now it's time for Kentucky to tear it up in Louisiana. The Wildcats will leave beautiful Lexington, KY and hopefully return to Lexington with a win. But no matter what happens, the 'Cats will certainly be humbled back at their Lexington outfit.

"Dog Over Board!" Vanderbilt at #?? Georgia
Let's go to Athens, GA. Previously in Georgia football- Georgia had a great game in proving doubters wrong... until late. Tennessee came back to win by no less than two touchdowns. This time- Georgia has an easy opponent in Vanderbilt. Let's see who wins this one. Vanderbilt University was billed as the most bautiful university in the nation (maybe the world) in its time. The Nashville, TN school is ready to do beautiful things out on the road. The Commodores invite you to join the Vandy boys in upsetting Georgia. However, Georgia isn't going to let that happen. Georgia doesn't lose often. They aren't Mississippi State or Colorado. They are winners unlike most teams. The Bulldogs stumbled against Tennessee and hope not to lose to another Tennessee team. Unfortunately, the unthinkable happened- Georgia loses again. What's wrong with Georgia? This was a team that made the Sugar Bowl last year. Now they probably aren't going to the BCS. It's a shocking deal. Maybe even highway robbery. But I got something much worse later in this report in the Big Ten. Stay tune for more. (-; )

With 9:00 left in the Third Quarter, a BIG fight occured after an extra point by Miami was scored. Miami and Florida International (an inferior opponent in Miami) engag
-+-ed in a hellacious brawl similar to Clemson/South Carolina a few years ago as well as the Pistons/Pacers game in the NBA that was marked as the "Malice at the Palace." A number of people will likely be suspended, expelled, have scholarships removed, or any number of things. On kind of a funny side, this may spark a new rivalry since both schools are in the greater Miami area. But this is nowhere near funny overall. It's like the same people who think NASCAR is fun because of all the crashing, bumping, and thugging road rage which takes place. I never condoned crashes in NASCAR and feel no different about college sports fights. Speaking of that Clemson/South Carolina game a few years ago, it was Lou Holtz's final game before hanging it up. He mentioned that he couldn't control his boys as he was obviously disgusted after that specific fight. Thirteen played from both teams were ejected. Twenty-four policemen had to be on the field to break things up. Miami won the game, but it didn't really matter since this mega-brawl took place in South Beach. A stunning move would be if Miami decides not to go to a Bowl Game much like what Clemson and South Carolina did a few years ago after their brawl. (35-0; MIAMI)

* Baylor at #?? Texas (RIVALRY GAME)
This is a Big XII Rivalry Game between two of Texas' four Big XII teams. It's the worst Texas Big XII team vs. the best Texas Big XII team. Baylor University is in the Texas city of Waco, and the University of Texas is in Austin. Austin is the city where we'll be in for this one. The Baylor Bears have very little redeeming quality in football and men's basketball. Can you really make the case for teams like this? Meanwhile, Texas excels in almost every sport they play in. They almost went for a triple crown as they won the National Championship in football and baseball, but just didn't make it into the Final Four. The Longhorns want to continue their winning streak and remain unbeaten in Big XII play.
Texas connected over 6 touchdown passes. It was a record-breaking performance passing even... Vince Young. (63-31; TEXAS)

"Live By the Axe, Die By the Axe" Minnesota at Wisconsin (RIVALRY: Battle for Paul Bunyan's Axe)
This game pits who next door neighbors that simply hate each other. Last year's game saw Minnesota ready to take home the axe... until they blew it late. Wisconsin had the winning edge (no pun intended). Now they want to win this game in Madison, WI. The Minnesota Golden Gophers are basically like a car running out of gas with no gas station in sight. Meanwhile, Wisconsin is running at full song. Too bad their hockey team couldn't beat North Dakota at home in Overtime (Wisconsin was #2 in the nation in hockey against #5 North Dakota). The Wisconsin Badgers don't want this weekend to get any worse. (48-12; WISCONSIN)

"Engine Breakdown" Houston at Southern Mississippi
Let's go to the state of Mississippi now as Conference USA is underway. Houston stumbled against both Miami and Louisiana-Lafayette. The Cougars can't afford to stumble to a quality team like Southern Mississippi if they want to revive Houston football. It wasn't to be as the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles were a bit too much. The steam has been out of Houston now. They need to win only two more games to be liable for Bowl Game consideration. The Cougars have now lost three straight. I never said Houston was a powerhouse. They just need to win the games they could win on paper. Sad stuff for Houston fans. Houston loses even though Kolb threw for over 340 yards and 2 touchdowns. (??-??; SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI)

"The Road Less Travelled" UAB at Rice
Rice is glad that their crosstown rivals lost tonight. It could be a chance for Rice to bring some good news to the city of Houston. The Rice Owls are the second-best team in Houston. They have been staying in the game longer compared to past times. The Alabama-Birmingham Blazers were ready to turn up the heat in an already-hot Houston evening. Could you believe that Rice actually led UAB by two touchdowns? Despite UAB's comeback, Rice was still money. Congratulations, Rice. For one day of your miserable team's life, you're a winner. You won for Houston while Houston lost their third straight game. Enjoy. (34-33; RICE) *big win nominee*

"One of Those Days" Cincinatti at #7 Louisville
Louisville is up next, everyone. They got Cincinatti at home. It's a battle of two former National Champions in basketball. Louisville's boys caught fire in recent years, so can these Louisville Sluggers bat a Home Run against Cincinatti? Football types know Cincinatti for the Cincinatti Bengals. College football types know Cincinatti for the Cincinatti Bearcats. These boys in black, white, and red are red-dy to shock Louisville and put a big, fat smile on the faces of people in Lexington. Not wanting to hear much of that are Louisville. Louisville is like St. Louis in the MLB- postseason bound. They also share the same nickname- Cardinals. The Lousville Cardinals were looking to stay on a winning track. It only seems like Louisville has inferior competition across the board (until they meet West Virginia on November 2nd). I don't think Louisville is completely cocky. I bet they just want to win the Big East in their sophomore appearance and play in a BCS Bowl Game against whomever thinks they are better than Louisville. Louisville's been known for putting on the points. This one seen fewer points than most Louisville games. The end result was the same- Louisville finished one game to make ready for their next game. A touchdown decided this one. (23-17; #7 LOUISVILLE)

"Room for One More?" #19 Missouri at Texas A&M
People really belittled Texas A&M in the past. I only belittle Texas A&M when they play Texas Tech and Texas. Other than that, they are nobody's cupcake. Yeah. Nobody's b:censored:es. Missouri wants to slap TAMU around so they can run the table like most people envisioned. Did they? I don't see Missouri running the table. The University of Missouri can be found in a little city called Columbia, MO. Funny how there isn't a big league 1-A team in St. Louis or even Kansas City, MO. Oh, there's Washington University, but that's Division 3 (and my brother used to go there). The Tigers are all big league players and one of many Division 1 teams with Tigers as the nickname. The black and gold are coming our way. You can find Texas A&M's main campus in College Station, TX. College Station is pretty far from Houston, but still in the general vincinity of Southeast Texas. People slapped around Texas A&M like they are completely abysmal. At least they're better than Baylor (everyone is). The Aggies don't want anyone else talking about a 12th Man Advantage because Texas A&M is HOME of the 12th Man. The 1930s National Champs are ready shut up Mizzou. And it was something they did quite well, thank you very much. (25-19; TEXAS A&M) *upset!*

"Hoos Your Daddy?" #1? Iowa at Indiana
JNast would be beside himself if his Iowa boys don't get it done against Indiana. Should be an easy win, right? Indiana's going nowhere fast. Indiana's only good for making NCAA Tournaments in basketball (and winning some every now and again). Let's meet Iowa first. The University of Iowa has a nice logo. It just means that they can see things in other teams that other teams know they have. Iowa can see an easy win. After all, Hawkeyes are just the most dangerous foul out there other than eagles. They left Iowa City and Kinnick Stadium as Kirk Ferentz and company went into Bloomington, IN. Pretty nice name for a city, eh? Some teams have seen their high rankings push up daisies and lay belly up. Indiana hopes to continue this trend. Indiana University has seen their coach come back from a brain tumor. So you could say that this has to be an inspired effort by Indiana for the rest of the year. It almost seems like when something bad has happened to you, you become a better person. Look at Brett Favre when his dad died. Favre UNLOADED on the Oakland Raiders and beat them mercilessly. Now Indiana is looking to give his coach some calming thoughts when he sleeps tonight. The Hoosiers usually aren't very good in football as they are in basketball. Pick any day of the week for Indiana to show why they can be a contender instead of a guaranteed win, and they'll do their best. And in this game, the Hoosiers were money. It's the first Top 15 win for Indiana since they beat (then) #9 Ohio State in 1989. It's also the first time they got 2 Big Ten wins or more in a long while. JNasty, how bad does this one hurt? (31-28; INDIANA) *upset!*

* Rutgers at Navy
The State University of New Jersey and birthplace of college football will go to Annapolis, MD to meet the United States Naval Academy. Navy is a surprising team, so can they plant a surprise on Rutgers? The Navy Midshipmen are ready to send some torpedos right at Rutgers. But the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers are ready to thrust their swords into the air and intervene any Navy attempt at an upset. And that was no problem in the end. Rutgers remains unbeaten. (34-0; Rutgers)

"ABOUT DAMNED TIME!!!" Texas Tech at Colorado
Let's see if Colorado loses another one as their season has gone straight to hell and burned to a crisp. The Colorado Buffaloes will play in their beautiful stadium against Texas Tech. The Texas Tech Red Raiders been winning unlike Colorado. Colorado stinks this year. But after this game, who feels like crap now? BLOWOUT win for Colorado as they avoid the winless bug. They couldn't beat Montana State. They couldn't beat Baylor. But they get Texas Tech. Wow! (30-6; COLORADO) *disappointing loss nominee*

* James Madison at New Hampshire
I believe New Hampshire was the #1 team in the land in 1-AA. New Hampshire's Wildcats had a horrible Saturday in being blown out by the James Madison Dukes. Certainly not the way to lose a game if you're highly ranked. The polls won't favor New Hampshire after this. I hope I didn't jinx New Hampshire in saying that they are the best team in 1-AA. But considering what kind of upsets and sad losses this weekend produced, this seems pretty normal. (43-24; James Madison) *upset nominee*

* Western Kentucky at Missouri State
The 1-AA scores continue as we check in with Missouri State of Springfield, MO. This was a school our own FoolKiller once attended. Surpringly on the year he transferred, WKU were National Champs. They are nowhere near National Championship status as they are about 2-3 on the year. A BIG win over Missouri State would help numb the pain. Missouri State is part of the Missouri Valley Conference in basketball (maybe football as well). You don't put down teams in the Missouri Valley Conference in basketball because they will surprise you. The Missouri State (formerly known as Southwest Missouri State) Bears are going to make some noise. You don't want to upset a bear now, do you? They say that you get the horns if you mess with the bull. You become raw meat to an angered bear. Looking to take their chances are Western Kentucky. Western Kentucky University is a Pioneer Football League team in football and a Sun Belt team in basketball (picked to go all the way in the Sun Belt in basketball for 2006-2007 (Sporting News). They reside in the Kentucky city of Bowling Green. The Hilltoppers are ready to make some noise. And they did just that. All even, boys. Great job. You're 3-3 now. (17-14; Western Kentucky)

* Morehouse at Savannah State
I profiled Savannah State some time back. They epitomize what losing is all about. Granted I've never seen Savannah State in action, it just pains me to see Savannah State lose game after game, week after week. Something has to give. No one loses forever. At one point to save someone's job, the team has to win so that they don't feel like s:censored: waking in the morning after a tough day's work. Almost every game for Savannah State seems like a challenge. The Tigers want to do something about it. So this is a case of two HBCUs (historically-black colleges and universities) as Savannah State met up against Martin Luther King Jr.s' alma mater- Morehouse College. The Maroon Tigers of Morehouse College is a member of the SIAC in Division 2 including Stillman, Tuskegee (conference power), Miles, Kentucky State, and more. I have great news- SAVANNAH STATE WINS!!! No, let me rephrase- SAVANNAH-freaking-STATE freaking-WINS!!! You dig? Losers no more, but they are still losers. (24-20; SAVANNAH STATE) *big win nominee*

BIGGEST WIN(S) OF THE WEEK
SAVANNAH STATE WINS!!! Finally! - No. This isn't a typo. Talk about dopey teams. Temple gets root canaled against Clemson. Finally, Savannah State actually wins a game when losing is their trademark for a school whose motto is "you can go anywhere from here." Where they've been is in the dumps, wallowing and crying after every loss. Now they know what it takes to win games and what victory feels like. Enjoy the feeling, Savannah State? Go and do it again in future games.

MOST DISAPPOINTING LOSS(ES) OF THE WEEK
Texas Tech Falls to Lame Duck, Colorado, in Blowout Loss - I wanted Colorado to get a win some place, I just wasn't expecting against Texas Tech and in a blowout. I initially had Virginia Tech's loss to Boston College as my Most Disappointing Loss, but this is much worse.

UPSET(S) OF THE WEEK (if any)
(tie) Auburn Shocks Florida; James Madison Outclasses and Stuns #1 New Hampshire - (Florida/Auburn) Not only did Auburn beat Florida, they outclassed and OWNED them late on a bad passing scheme. Auburn could have settled for a win by a single point. A basketball analogy (and Florida should know basketball since their men's basketball team are the defending National Champs) is that Florida has the ball until they turn it over on a clean strip which leads to a lay-up on a fast break. Lewis and Clark Collectively Get Smashed by Whitworth - Whitworth basically whitewashed Lewis and Clark. If the score looks familiar, that's the amount of points Texas put up on Colorado in last year's Big XII Championship game.

"NEVER NEVER NEVER EVER GIVE UP!" Kentucky at #14 LSU

I heard the first half of this on the radio while driving home from a cookout. I couldn't see it and it was still ugly. Oh, and they did give up. I think it was after about 10 minutes of play. It felt like every time LSU touched the ball they scored and every time Kentucky touched the ball they punted. After teh first half I just turned it off because it was already 28-0. After hearing the final score of 49-0 I was glad I turned it off.

It's like the same people who think NASCAR is fun because of all the crashing, bumping, and thugging road rage which takes place.

Do you know my dad? His exact words Friday night, "They should let them get out and duke it out the way they used to. Now they can't even cuss."

This is the same man that took me to demolition derby's and figure-eights as a kid. Of course, my interest in racing is due to him, but I think NASCAR crashes way too much to be considered quality racing.

I caugh the end of this one. Bearcats had the ball on Louisville's 16 with 45 seconds remaining. An incomplete and penalty later and it was 2nd and 21 with 18 seconds left. Incomplete, incomplete, incomplete Louisville's ball with 3 seconds left, game over. A missed touchdown decided this one. I sat there thinking, "ONE SCORE and you end it!!!" Thsi was also Louisville's homecoming game. Should they be that close on homecoming?

This was a school our own FoolKiller once attended. Surpringly on the year he transferred, WKU were National Champs. They are nowhere near National Championship status as they are about 2-3 on the year.
