College Football Week 1 (8/27 - 9/2): The Championship Hunt Begins

GTPlanet, what's up? This is John M. out of Houston, TX, USA. And welcome to the first College Football thread for the 2006 season! It's time to make a run for the postseason in all four divisions of NCAA Football. Threads like this one is all about the hunt for the Bowl Season in 1-A and playoffs in every other division. I will try to do Divisions 2 and 3 if I can. If you are a fan of a certain university or college and want to share your respect with me, let me know so I can have the responsibility of getting game results to you if I can. Make sure it has a football team as of right now. So no non-football schools like Hartford, IUPUI, Pepperdine, Gonzaga, Georgia State, or anything like that in this football thread.

This thread will be updated as often as possible to talk about how games go as well as who won it all in that game. Each day or week will be complete with a general synopsis of what happened. Look at my Tuskegee vs. Stillman game to see how I do scores.

Here is a small news update. Dismissed Oklahoma QB Rhett Bomar became Quarterback for 1-AA Sam Houston State. He'll join the football-rich Southland Conference (well, there are about three or four schools who don't have football teams in the Southland Conference). He'll become a Bearkat and try to keep the Huntsville, TX outfit to get the job done and probably go as far as fellow Southland Conference member Texas State went. Texas State made their first-ever playoffs last year and are looking to return to prominence. Bomar needs to be on point if Sam Houston State goes on to play the Texas State Bobcats.

And don't worry, FoolKiller. I'll be sure to cover your Wildcats as this COULD be a surprise season for them, especially considering one of the nation's top high school prospects foregone the big schools and went to Kentucky. And if you want any encouraging news, I'll just say that in terms of basketball powers in football, North Carolina is probably the best of them. Kentucky is the best of the SEC basketball powers in football. So who's the worst of all the basketball schools in football? Well, it's a tie between Syracuse and Duke. If it means anything, I'll wish your Kentucky Wildcats the very best season they'll ever play.

Now for some off-topic deals. In speaking of Lexington, KY, my thoughts and prayers go out to the 49 people who died in that Runway crash. I think one of the casualties was a former Kentucky Wildcat athlete. So that's sad. My thoughts and prayers to everyone affected.

Well, yesterday coach Brooks FINALLY picked the starting quarterback in Andre Woodson. It was no surprise as Woodson has a long arm and can actually read the receivers. Our other option was a guy who can scramble but NEVER gave the ball to our best receiver because he can't read the receivers well. I expect to see Brooks switch quarterbacks when we are desperate for short yardage or are sitting at 2nd and goal type situations. Brooks has said that Woodson is the starter but both men will play.

Fortunately no one I knew was on the plane, but it is still tragic. I'm practically burned out on the story because my wife wouldn't turn the TV off and they did wall-to-wall coverage for 12 hours straight. fortunately I didn't watch the Emmy's immediately afterwards because apparently they had a Lost parody with a plane crash as the opening. That pissed off quite a few locals.

Yes, John Hooker was a former UK baseball player who also signed a free agent deal with the White Sox and did some bench warming and farm team work for them. The real tragedy in his death is not that he played at UK, but that he had just gotten married the night before and he and his new wife were on their way to their honeymoon.

Of course every time new details of who was on the plane comes out what would normally sound like a typically boring travel story turns into a heart wrenching tragedy, like the woman who let her daughter fly alone for the first time or the man that dropped his girlfriend off for a business flight, the same flight she takes every week.

Yesterday they discovered that the co-pilot who survived was at the controls at the time of the accident. I have a feeling once he recovers enough to realize what happened he will wish he hadn't made it.


Well, that is depressing enough, and far off-topic. It is just anyone talks about around here lately, so I can ramble on about it for days.

Let's get back to football.

I wanted to make a thread about NCAA College Baseball because the University of Kentucky has a pretty good baseball team. I think it was a ranked unit during this past season. John Hooker will no doubt be missed.

Now when I do scores, each score will be done between Sunday and Saturday. So any scores related to any Sunday games will take place in Week 2 action. So expect my report on games like Kentucky at Louisville next week. Let's talk about this battle for the (Kentucky) Governor's Cup since you brought it up. I parenthesized Kentucky because there are some other rivalry games for certain colleges which are for the Governor's Cup. For example, there's the Governor's Cup for Kansas when Big XII schools Kansas and Kansas State play. Traditionally, Louisville's been known as a basketball school.

According to my Sports Illustrated College Sports Almanac for the 2002-2003 school years, Louisville has won the Men's National Championship in 1980 and then 1986. So they won their first title three years before I was born, then won it again three years AFTER I was born. I was born in 1983 in case you can't do the math. I first got into football around 2002 when the Houston Texans made their debut and was playing "NFL Blitz 1999" at Lamar University. I never really known that Louisville has caught fire in Division 1-A. Louisville football really has a chance to go very far. I can remember when they almost upset the Miami Hurricanes (I think it was IN Miami, which makes it worse). A way to overexaggerate Louisville football is that they are the Fresno State of the East. Louisville is the king of football in the state of Kentucky. They do play in the Big East, which is not a serious football conference. Louisville's toughest competition will be against West Virginia. WVU shocked America (including myself) when they took down the Georgia Bulldogs in the 2006 Nokia Sugar Bowl. West Virginia may be on the way to silencing critics about the Big East not being worthy of a BCS bid anymore. But, that's Louisville's top competition.

Now let's talk about the blue and white of Kentucky. Kentucky is also a basketball power with a more national titles than Louisville. In football, they are almost complete lame ducks. The thing that seperates Kentucky from Louisville in football is that Kentucky plays in a much tougher conference in football- the SEC. Let me take you back to a quote I made in my College Football 2006 Preview:

"I think the Wildcats will win against Texas State, Ole Miss, Central Michigan, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, and Louisiana-Monroe. That is a total of six wins- just enough to go to a Bowl Game...The University of Kentucky's motto is 'Dream - Challenge- Succeed.' That's EXACTLY what the blue and white will need to do to get her done." -JohnBM01 on 8/21/2006 in the College Football 2006 Preview thread

The best case scenario for Kentucky is if they can make it a close game. I know they want to win against UK's hated Louisville unit, but I think they would have to be proud if they lose by about a touchdown or a field goal. Do I think they will beat Louisville and AT Louisville? Let me tell you something, FoolKiller. Papa John's Cardinal Stadium is VERY tough to play at. Louisville is nobody's cupcake. They will stay in the game and play to the bitter end. Kentucky is going to have to take what Louisville gives them and be able to execute on offense and defense to win. If they can match and better what Louisville's dealing to Kentucky, then Kentucky will be 1-0 to start the year. If they don't get it done there, then they can look for the Texas State game to regain their momentum. Texas State is a cupcake only because it is a 1-AA team at a 1-A team. But if you followed my 1-AA coverage last season, Texas State made the 1-AA playoffs and had a nice run going. But first things first- Louisville.

These are my score predictions for the UK at UL game:

POSSIBILITY 1: 41-10; LOUISVILLE
POSSIBILITY 2: 24-21; LOUISVILLE (game-winning kick)
POSSIBILITY 3: 27-20; Kentucky

I'm going to try to bring some more Division 1-AA to Division 3 content in case we have anyone on GTPlanet being represented by the lower conferences of NCAA football.

First game will be the Northwestern vs. Miami University game. Please note that Miami University is the Ohio school, not the Hurricanes and their University of Miami. Randy Walker died over the summer as a new Northwestern coach will look to keep Northwestern football into perspective in the Big Ten and in the nation. Meanwhile, Miami University is looking to rebound after sort of a lackluster season overall and in the MAC. Both schools have three popular alums. Two popular Northwestern alums are Michael Wilbon (co-host of the highly-rated ESPN show, "Pardon the Interruption") and the wonderful Brent Musburger, who I have with Brad Nessler as two of the most sensational voices in sports, much less college sports. None can be more popular on the Miami University side as Ben Roethlisberger. He probably has the best win-loss percentage of any quarterback in their first two years in the NFL. He was unbeaten in his first season and won a playoff game. We all know what happened a season later. He played under center for the Steelers and won Super Bowl XL in Detroit. So this should be a good one for both teams.

Lat year was a first for Kentucky. We hope to keep it going this upcoming season. While I mean no offense to John Hooker, he did not play during that time. He was a former player who had a few years of lackluster professional baseball since his time at Kentucky. He hasn't played any officially organized baseball in a couple of years.

Let's talk about this battle for the (Kentucky) Governor's Cup since you brought it up. I parenthesized Kentucky because there are some other rivalry games for certain colleges which are for the Governor's Cup. For example, there's the Governor's Cup for Kansas when Big XII schools Kansas and Kansas State play.

You can just call it the Battle for the Bluegrass as only the media and the governor himself refer to it by its technical name, and that is rare itself.

I never really known that Louisville has caught fire in Division 1-A. Louisville football really has a chance to go very far. Know what the difference is between a dynasty and a wannabe? Five national championships and about 70 miles.

That doesn't excuse our lack of competitiveness.

If they can match and better what Louisville's dealing to Kentucky, then Kentucky will be 1-0 to start the year.

Dreams are nice, aren't they?

If they don't get it done there, then they can look for the Texas State game o regain their momentum.

I'm already looking.

Texas State is a cupcake only because it is a 1-AA team at a 1-A team. But if you followed my 1-AA coverage last season, Texas State made the 1-AA playoffs and had a nice run going.

Is it bad if even 1-AA teams leave me feeling a bit worried?

These are my score predictions for the UK at UL game:

POSSIBILITY 1: 41-10; LOUISVILLE

Wow, you are being generous with that extra touchdown.

I'm just kidding but this would not surprise me.

POSSIBILITY 3: 27-20; Kentucky

Anyway, it feels good to have football back, even if my team sucks.

I may sound harsh against UK, but if you want an idea of what the mentality is like just go to www.ukathletics.com, the official Web site for UK sports. The home page has a bunch of basketball info, including the schedule. Football starts Sunday and basketball is still more than two months away but they are all focused on basketball. It tells you where UK's mindset is. To understand how this is nothing new consider this: In the 1950's at an end of year athletics banquet UK gave Adolph Rupp (basketball coach) a new car. Bear Bryant (football coach) received a lighter. Bear Bryant quit that year.

Anyway, four days and change to the game.

I will now do daily college football scores for this season. I hope you will enjoy my content throughout the course of this season. PLEASE get involved in my college football discussion if you love college football. I'd love for you to join me in my discussions and reports to keep everything interesting. Your comments can be about a specific game, a game you will be looking forward to, or whatever. But get involved. I know there probably aren't as many college football fans as there are NFL fans. I usually want you all to get involved in the discussions because I love to share all of this with you all and how do I know if I have fans or supporters if you don't say so? So are you ready for some [college] football? New this season is my general synopsis of the day's games. These synopses I will provide will be a general overview of what happened that day. To make things fair, I usually want to do the synopsis AFTER the games. Otherwise, it would just be an extra introduction. Let's do 2006, players!

As a quick note, games are determined as certain division games based on whose homefield is on.

THURSDAY SYNOPSIS
Saturday football came two days early. Most of the critical matches are this Saturday, but a number of teams played today in an effort to reach the Bowl Games for 1-A and the playoffs for 1-AA. Northwestern has a very interesting match as they try to start anew with the passing of Randy Walker. Don't expect high-caliber matches at this point as it will mostly seem like it's 1-A powers up against lesser teams. But if California-Davis could beat Stanford last year, imagine what other upsets could happen. Teams who played tonight got their first taste of action before the fun REALLY begins on Saturday. Some of the big name schools sort of struggled against some of the weaker teams. 1-AA teams have shown nice promise against teams in 1-AA and lower. A lot of the home teams won their games. The start of football season 2006 has a wild start to welcome back die hard fans.

NOTE: I fell asleep in trying to get my scores in. All of this information has come late, and I apologize.


DIVISION 1-A GAMES
"Walker: Northwestern Ranger" Northwestern at Miami University (GAME OF THE DAY)
This season begins with Northwestern playing their first full season without the passing Randy Walker. They must lace them up and report for duty at Miami University. I'm sure fellow Wildcat and PTI guest host, Michael Wilbon, will want to see if his Wildcats get it done. The Big Ten school is up against a MAC team coming off a subpar season. It almost seems like the Oxford, OH unit wished Ben Roethlisberger was still around at Miami U. The Redhawks also will remember Randy Walker. GTPlanet, this is only the first day of Division 1 action, and we already have an emotional match on tap. Last year's sad story was Tulane University still playing sports despite the fact that Katrina and Rita unleashed Hell on Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. Randy Walker played at Miami University and coached for Northwestern. Both schools LOVE him about as much as Ohio and Nebraska liked Mr. Solich(?). It almost doesn't matter who wins this game because giving Randy Walker a great game to remember in Heaven is more important than wins and losses. ESPNU put this game on. A clutch Special Teams play by the Wildcats was a sweet touchdown. Tack on two more, please. Miami University couldn't find the end zone. Even though Northwestern won the game, the real winner of this game were the collective hearts of both teams sharing their love and respect for Randy Walker. Walker would have given his boys a motivational speech and congratulate them on a job well done. Randy Walker would have been proud. (21-3; Northwestern)

"All That and a Bag of Chips" Boston College at Central Michigan
Remember when Boston College was in the Big East along with Miami? Back then, it was when Big East was no doubt a conference worthy of bigtime Bowls. Times have changed. Boston College now plays in a much tougher conference and is able to do their best. No Doug Flutie or Hail Mary in today's BC, but the BC of new will need to do well in games against cupcakes and world powers. But can the Eagles shake off Central Michigan? Central Michigan is part of the MAC conference. In fact, there are three different schools in the Mid-American Conference with "Michigan" tacked on to its name. It's up there with Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan. The Chippewas were under fire for their American Indian nickname, but was able to retain their nickname. They are a pretty good football team up there. Maybe not upsetting a Top 10 team, but pretty good for their conference. The game saw both teams trade field goals after one quarter. BC led 17-3 after one half. Then Boston College left Mount Pleasant, MI with a more-than-pleasant 31-24 win. (31-24; Boston College)

"The Valley of the Fun" North Arizona at Arizona State
The state of Arizona has a new baby in terms of football fields. I seen only one picture of the new Arizona Cardinal stadium, but I've seen a pretty nice deal. We have the state of Arizona on tap here. Some of you people from Arizona will be proud to see me report this game here as NAU goes up against ASU. Let's meet the Pac-10 unit first. I always consider Arizona State as the best football team in the state of Arizona. Better than the Cardinals in the NFL... COMPLETELY better than the Wildcats (I'm talking about Arizona's kitties, FoolKiller. Fear not). Arizona State has seen their Sun Devils go to some big Bowl Games including some BCS games. A great season will help them to return to the postseason. And then there is Northern Arizona. Northern Arizona plays indoors in the combination football field and basketball arena called the Walkup Skydome. This Big Sky team has tough teams in conference like East Washington, Montana, Montana State, and maybe even Portland State. The Lumberjacks don't seem too powerful at football, but I have no real idea about their basketball unit. All the makings of a great match, eh boys and girls? So let's see who got her done. Do remember- regardless of the winner- the state of Arizona wins. The game was a 14-14 deadlock at some point around Halftime. Arizona State may have played its first game and already may pick up a crushing loss. Can you believe it? Not to mention it would be a frontrunner for "Most Disappointing Loss" in my weekly review each Saturday. But let's not count them out yet. This isn't basketball, so don't expect a close shave all the time. (35-14; ARIZONA STATE)

"Flash Funky" Minnesota at Kent State
One Big Ten school is on the road at a MAC school, so why not another? You got it! But unlike the Northwestern/Miami University game, this game isn't as emotional. Minnesota is a very good team in the Big Ten. The Minneapolis, MN unit plays in the home of the Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Twins. The cuddly wittle Golden Gophers are going on the road to Kent, OH. To my knowledge, there is no such thing as Kentucky State University. Kent State is not short for Kentucky. Kent State isn't even in Kentucky. They do have a popular alum in Antonio Gates. He didn't play football, but basketball. Hopefully Kent State can see their Golden Flashes get a golden victory over Minnesota. (44-0; Minnesota)

"A New Generation of Spurrier" South Carolina at Mississippi State
Steve Spurrier is back in college and in the SEC. It's been that way since last year. He coached the Columbia, SC unit to a nice winning season in his first go with USoCar. Now it's time for the Gamecocks to get cocky and win some games in the character-packed SEC football conference. Mississippi State lacks a great football unit. Even my hometown Houston Cougars (they play this Saturday at Rice) beat Mississippi State last year. Can Mississippi State improve before they have another losing season under Sylvester Croom? It would be a big win if the Bulldogs can shave off a few more hairs from Steve Spurrier with a crushing defeat. After a Touchback to start the game, Mississippi State picked off South Carolina on the opposing 27-yard line. The QB took a BIG hit from South Carolina afterwards! Sad thing is that Mississippi State couldn't cash in on first blood. Two drives go nowhere early. Don't laugh, but the USoCar QB's last name is Smelley. So we have two interesting QB's with last names- Smelley at South Carolina, and John David Booty in Southern California. South Carolina was on paydirt once this game was over. A nice shutout win can mean a lot if you're the one who wins in one. (15-0; South Carolina)

"War of the Birds" Eastern Michigan at Ball State
Muncie, IN is where we are for this game as EMU meets Ball State. Ball State is maybe one of the worst teams in the MAC. Some of you who watch "Pardon the Interruption" may remember Jason Whitlock as a guest host. Well, he's a Ball State Cardinal as much as the current Cardinals. They also have one of the worst-looking Cardinal logos I've ever seen. I like the cardinal logo from Lamar (non-football school) better (their website at: http://www.lamar.edu ). But they are playing against some boys in green from Michigan. No, not Michigan State, but Eastern Michigan. Love your football? The Eagles are throwing some long bombs your way. Can you catch the ball? Can you dig their vibes? You NEED to dig them because they were for real in this one. (34-6; BALL STATE)

"Owl Hunt" Temple at Buffalo
Quick! Name one of the worst Division 1-A schools in the nation. If you guessed Temple, you're right. This team hasn't been to a Bowl Game in a hell of a lot of years. Not too many people care about this lethargic team, but did you know they are the newest members of the MAC conference? So it means that Temple tried to hang with the Big East and failed miserably. Likewise, UCF (Central Florida) tried playing in the MAC and was winless. Now the Owls look to catch fire in the MAC conference without being fried meat. Nintendo people, don't point your Nintendo Zapper light guns at the Owls' chances of succeeding in the MAC just yet. It's because they have Buffalo to deal with. Buffalo, New York hasn't had much to cheer for last year as Buffalo has been lethargic themselves. The Buffalo Bulls are also starting anew so to speak. It's a new slate for both teams. But who will prevail? I could probably imagine what happened for the final score- both teams traded field goals, but Buffalo cashed in a touchdown, but without a successful point-after attempt. Same old, same old for Temple. I can see them being kicked out of the MAC in less than three years now even though this game was close. (9-3, OT; BUFFALO)

"Land of the Rising Huskies" Rhode Island at Connecticut
The boys from America's littest state went up to where you can enjoy beautiful weather any time of year. Meet Connecticut. I think you can find the University of Connecticut in Hartford, CT. They play their college basketball in Storrs, CT. I say that this basketball power is on the rise after having a winning season last season. You know how I've badmouthed basketball powers in football? I don't hate any team. I just like it when a school can succeed in both sports without being so much of a power in just one sport. Connecticut has a wonderful and melodic fight song. Go look for it at { http://www.fightmusic.com }. The Huskies are on the rise as they need to keep up the good work. They'll need to do it against Rhode Island. They are part of the Atlantic 10, which will no longer sponsor football after this season. They will carry over football honors to the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). The Rams are no pushovers in 1-AA. They may be pushovers against a 1-A school. Connecticut led at 31-7 at the half. They never looked back since. (52-7; CONNECTICUT)

"Golden Hurricane Watch" Stephen F. Austin at Tulsa
Welcome to Tulsa, OK! It's home of two proud college programs with Oral Roberts in the non-football ranks, and Tulsa for both football and basketball (maybe even baseball as well). Tulsa is an ex-WAC school that was the runner-up in the inaugural C-USA championship game. The Golden Hurricane is ready to sweep away all comers, including Texas' own Stephen F. Austin. Stephen F. Austin is a very important figure in my home state of Texas. He's as special to Texas as Sam Houston was to the city of Houston. The statue of Sam Houston can be found in Herman Park here in Houston. But this 1-AA unit is part of a football-rich Southland Conference. They are football-rich despite the fact that Lamar, Texas-Arlington, Texas-San Antonio, and Southland newcomers Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (welcome to the party, boys!) don't have football teams at present. The Lumberjacks looked to chop down Tulsa, but the reverse happened. Tulsa makes this a not-even-close deal. Thanks for coming! (44-0 TULSA)

"A Whirlwind Season" Toledo at Iowa State
Big XII is the home unit as the MAC is hosted by the Big XII's Iowa State. Toledo is a great football team in the underrated MAC conference when they went to Ames, IA to play against Iowa State. The Cyclones want to start on a good foot. Iowa State led at about 14-8 at the half. The game later got VERY interesting as we have our first multi-overtime game of the season. Toledo was thinking upset, but Iowa State was thinking "winners!" And that's what they did. The would win by two, maybe because Toledo failed to score a 2-point conversion in the Third Overtime. Iowa State did convert, and they win. (45-43, 3OT; IOWA STATE)

"Ragin' Cajun Nation" Alcorn State at Louisiana-Lafayette
This was defense at its finest as the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns got it done by one over the Braves of Alcorn State. Alcorn State was brave, but not brilliant. (7-6; LOUISIANA-LAFAYETTE)

"Blue Meanies" Florida International at Middle Tennessee State
A defensive strangehold meant that the Blue Raiders barely nudged out the Golden Panthers from Miami's Florida International University. (7-6; MIDDLE TENNESSEE STATE)

"Don't Give a Dam" Eastern Washington at Oregon State
It was about 42-7 at the half in favor of Oregon State. The Beavers beaten their counterparts VERY badly. Eastern Washington is a good team in 1-AA. Just that the Eagles had a tough time in this tough place. (56-17; OREGON STATE)






DIVISION 1-AA and LOWER
Please note that I will try to present as many different divisions as possible. Feel free to take a good look at these scores.

* Slippery Rock at Youngstown State
Youngstown State would be the last school if you put together all Division 1 schools (even non-football schools) in alphabetical order. Air Force would be first and Youngstown State would be last. The Penguins are ready to hit the ice... I mean, the field to play some football. They will have to do it against Slippery Rock of Division 2's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). I think they are a good team. Just wish I knew more about the Rock. The game ended with a score that seems like a badly lopsided college hoops game. (51-21; YOUNGSTOWN STATE)

* Hofstra at Stony Brook
The state of New York is in the house here with two wonderful games. Hofstra is from Hempstead, NY, and Stony Brook is from Staten Island, NY. Let's do Hofstra first. Hofstra was one of the basketball units shafted in NCAA tournament consideration. Their basketball team went 24-6, yet no March Madness. Air Force got in, but not Hofstra. Oh well. There's always football. Hofstra is Pride. The Pride are prideful and aren't willing to lay down for anyone... not even Stony Brook. Who said pride is a sin? If that's true, then Hofstra did a hell of a job in the greater New York City area. (17-8; Hofstra)

* Morehead State at Western Illinois
You want more football? Sure. Do you want Morehead State football on the road? You got it! They knocked on Western Illinois' door saying, "let's play football!" Western Illinois were kind enough to welcome Morehead State for a game of pigskin. The Eagles of Morehead State would love a fresh start. So would Western Illinois. Just because Western Illinois loved to welcome MorSU doesn't mean they'll kindly let the Eagles beat them down. Western Illinois has plenty of fight that makes a Leatherneck a Leatherneck. The Leathernecks did give plenty of fight with at least two touchdowns early on. Add a lot more and a lot less, and the Leathernecks blew out the Eagles. (31-6; WESTERN ILLINOIS)

"Dora's Explorers" Wagner at La Salle
This game is between Wagner and La Salle. Wagner College can be found on Staten Island. This Northeastern Conference school is home to one proud bunch of Seahawks. The boys in dark green will be ready to find their way into Philadelphia, PA. La Salle is part of the Atlantic 10 in football. But did you know that they are part of the five-team MAAC conference? MAAC stands for the Metro-Atlantic Athletic Conference. It's often pronounced like the MAC conference. I usually spell out MAAC to avoid confusion. There is even a Division 3 conference called the MAC, but the full name is the Middle Atlantic States' Collegiate Conference. I probably seen it registered as the MAC. Anyhow, the La Salle Explorers are one of a number of Division 1 schools in the greater Philadelphia area. Philadelphia's Big Five in basketball include Villanova, Saint Joseph's, La Salle, and Pennsylvania. The City Six are all of the Big 5 including Drexel. There are only three MAAC football schools of five in which they play in the same conference for football and basketball. Counting La Salle, the other two are Marist in Poughkeepsie, NY and St. Peter's College somewhere in New Jersey. Wagner led 24-0 at the half as La Salle needs plenty of coaching adjustments. La Salle got in a touchdown sometime in the second half. This is a BEATDOWN no matter how you slice it. How bad is La Salle? Last year, they lost to a number of teams not even in 1-AA. They lose to The College of New Jersey. Sad. But not as sad at Texas Southern and Savannah State. (38-15; Wagner)

* Southern Arkansas at Nicholls State
Nicholls State welcomes Southern Arkansas. Then the Colonels beat down the Southern Arkansas Muleriders. (35-0; NICHOLLS STATE)

"Miles Away from Outstanding" Miles at Samford
This is all I know about Miles- it is part of the SIAC, or the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. I do know about Samford. Samford can be found in Alabama, and they are home to the Bulldogs. Woof woof! But is their bite bigger than their bark? Of course! They win by 3 dimes because Samford was money all night long. (37-7; SAMFORD)

* Chattanooga at Tennessee Tech
Chattanooga stayed in Tennessee to play Tennessee Tech. So let's see how it went. Chattanooga's Mocs were getting ready to hold down Tennessee Tech to plenty of 3 and Outs. But would Tennessee Tech take it? You know how it's said that you can't keep a good dog down? Hope you can't keep a good Golden Eagle down as well as this HBCU (historically-black colleges and universities) laced them up and went footballing. Chattanooga made this a VERY easy win. (31-7; Chattanooga)

"Why Must I Be Like That..." Northern Iowa at Drake
Northern Iowa is a sweet, sweet university for sports. They succeed in almost every sport. Now the Panthers need to rule football again until their basketball program gets started. But Drake is thinking "why must I be like that, why must I chase the cat? Nothing but the Bulldog in me!" Did the puppies sink their fangs into these kitties? Not a bad start for the Panthers. JOHN'S NOTES (where I share some extra comments either about today's games or just want to share something with you all)
That's Thursday's games. Now I just want to share some extra stuff. For some of you who have been reading my reports, how do I know so much about these other conferences and other teams? Believe it or not, I keep a small Text File on my computer which serves as my registry of NCAA teams. I even have to revise my little registry to keep track of teams jumpshifting to different conferences. I put it upon myself to examine as many conferences as possible and learn some new teams. If you love college football PERIOD, then I suggest you get to know some new teams and conference. Look up the CIAA, Old Dominion Athletic Conference, Great Northwest Athletic Conference, and that sort of thing. Also look into new teams like Central Arkansas, Lenoir-Rhyne, Millsaps, Grand Valley State, Mount Union, Louisiana College, Bentley, American International, and more. The best network which really highlights a number of different colleges and different sports is College Sports Television (CSTV). Where else are you going to see stuff like NCAA and NAIA football? This network has no problem showcasing Division 2 and Division 3 schools? ESPNU is good too, but most of its coverage is on Division 1 and here-and-there Divisions 2 and 3 games. Give it a go.

I also want to read more on other college football clubs, especially from non-football schools. Believe it or not, there is a little-known 1-AAA division, mostly reserved for non-football schools. My interest in football clubs comes from Marquette University's football club. I am wondering if there are other schools without scholarship or a full-blown team. I kind of wished that Wisconsin-Green Bay have a club football team just to have some college ball in Green Bay just like the Packers who play at Lambeau Field. Maybe even use Lambeau Field. I'll look more into the Marquette deal. Take a look at my college football thread called "Former Glory." I focus in on teams who once sponsored football but no longer sponsor football to this day. I'm going to put in two entries to that thread in this regard. So stay tuned.

It just occured to me that my fannes seems to have a very anti-cardinal base.

In college sports I am a UK fan - cross state rivals are Louisville Cardinals.
In NFL I am a Rams fan - in NFC West with Arizona Cardinals.
In MLB I am a Reds fan - The St. Louis Cardinals are the bane of my existence.

Maybe I just don't like cardinals? It is my state bird though, so maybe I should get over it and conver.......wait. I'm talking crazy now.

I can't beer good without think. That will be solved tonight.

On topic, I am glad to see Miss St. go down. Someone needs to break their spirit before UK takes them on. Of course we do have to take on SC first.

I'm surprised they played a conference game for their first game.

Week 1 now shows Friday. Now please remember that my definition of "week" is not like how we see NFL weeks. An NFL week is more like Tuesday to Monday. Weeks in college football will be between Sunday and Saturday. So any games this Sunday and Monday will be covered next week including Kentucky @ Louisville and the Miami/FSU game. I got me some Stuffed Crust Pizza Hut pizza with chicken and pepperoni, and ready for some college football. No, you can't have any of my pizza. Bad doggie! Bad, bad, bad!

WEEK 1, FRIDAY SYNOPSIS
Friday Night Lights, baby! I couldn't pick up too much action for this week, so expect to see only two games I was able to pick up and report about. The real fun begins Saturday. Football lovers who wanted at least SOME football action will get their money's worth with a 1-A game and a Div. 2 team up against a potent 1-AA team. One of these two games wasn't even close. Not a single home team under Division 1 won today.



DIVISION 1-A GAMES
"It's a Doggy Dogg World" Nevada at Fresno State 14-6 FrSU in Half
This is a west coast battle where a good team played at a better team's playground. Nevada has a very underrated basketball school unit, but their football unit has seen a Big Sky championship. They are now a Division 1-A team playing in football's highest conference. Reno, NV is called the World's Biggest Little City (I believe). Introducing the Nevada Wolfpack. These puppies are ready to go on a tear in Fresno, CA. So Fresno State didn't beat USoCal. They didn't lose any ranking as they stood up to them. My hometown Houston Texans have David Carr under center, whose number was retired last year or so. Carr's dominance will have to carry over the years. That has worked for some time. The Bulldogs are no one's cupcake. If Division 1 had a 32 or 64 team playoff (or make like March Madness and put in a play-in game), Fresno State could go very far. Just have to hope the Bulldogs are ready to welcome the doggies out of Nevada. Dog lovers, come get some! Fresno State led 14-6 at the half. Fresno State said "NO!" to Nevada and "YES!" to winning, which they did. (28-19; FRESNO STATE)





DIVISION 1-AA GAMES
* Asuza Pacific at San Diego
Another term for Cougar is "Mountain Lion." Did you know that? There's also Catamounts... but Division 2 independent Azusa Pacific prefers Cougars. San Diego's Toreros prefer beatdowns. And what do you get? A beatdown that extends longer than California's coastline. (27-0; SAN DIEGO)

DIVISION 2 GAMES
* Merrimack at Stonehill
This game was won convincingly by the Merrimack Warriors as Stonehill didn't stand a chance. (16-3; Merrimack)

"Fight Night" North Dakota at Central Washington
It was rumored that North Dakota may join Division 1 in a few years if North Dakota State was going to be in Division 1. Meanwhile, the Fighting Sioux of the North Central Conference met Central Washington of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. In basketball, the GNAC is the ONLY conference where you'll find two Alaskan schools- the Alaska-Anchorage Seawolves and the Alaska-Fairbanks Nanooks. Neither of them have football teams. The Wildcats of Central Washington do. Just that CWU's team didn't have enough fight to take down North Dakota. (28-14; North Dakota)





DIVISION 3 GAMES
Only one game was reported. Let's check it out.

* Curry at Worcester State
It was a close game as Curry of the New England Football Conference's Boyd Division met Worcester State. The game seen two touchdowns traded among the two. Only that Curry banged in the big winner with a money kick. (10-7; Curry)





JOHN'S NOTES
---NCAA Football 2007---
All my sports gamers out there... check out "NCAA Football 2007." I rented it for the PS2, and it's basically all you love about past NCAA Football games in a prettier package. This game seems to be more about momentum than last year's Heisman race. The kicking game is a bit more natural as you have to tilt down the right analog stick to initiate the kick, then quickly tilt up to get the most out of each kick. Nighttime has never looked prettier for this game. Commentary is much improved even if some of the same commentary we're used to in past games. As of 9/1/2006 9:24:50 PM CDT, I haven't made my User team, the Marina Dragons, yet. It even includes the two newer 1-A teams, Florida Atlantic and Florida International with their authentic football fields (compared to the generic fields they got in NCAA Football 2005), but not authentic fight songs. I have heard their fight songs on my computer from { http://www.fightmusic.com }. There are even new animations and hard hits. I'm talking about maybe a defensive tackle getting a huge vertical leap in tackling the holy Hell out of you. You want hits? Come get them because this game has plenty! A great addition to this game is the auto-naming feature for all rosters for all three divisions (1-A, 1-AA, and Historic). So you don't have to identify someone as "QB #77" or "MLB #15." You can have some wonderful action with generated team players. I think this is a good thing since you don't have marketed players. It's illegal to have actual players featured as playable characters. So you don't see any Vince Young or Matt Leinart featured as playable characters in the game for their respective teams. Brad Nessler actually announces when the offense works in a (something) and Goal situation. Commentary is improved in the game. You also get to compete in Spring Games, drills, scrimmages, and more. You even get to challenge plays. But unlike in the NFL, you get only one challenge compared to two in the NFL plus the third challenge if the first two are successful.

On the field, the gameplay is wonderful. Sometimes when making plays, you'll see the game slow down before a big moment. Think of it like in Enthusia when you're going too fast and end up making heavy contact with the wall. People who played Enthusia know that a head-on hit results in time slowing down and a BIG crash leads to a bright flash on the screen. Well, there are even dramatic moments in the game when it comes to throws into the end zone and sacks. The element of drama is eminent in this game. Campus Legend features playing in the life of one player of the team. You compete in a series of drills well before school starts. How well you do in the spring drills determines which schools will want to sign you. You want to play for Texas or Ohio State? Do your absolute best, and you'll be signed up to whatever school that's available for you. You actually have to pick from a number of schools to sign. Most collegiate prospects verbally consider certain schools. For example, let's call a person Firstname Lastname. Firstname is a student out of Cincinatti, OH. He may say to consider Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, Kansas State, or even Minnesota. Firstname would then select the school he wants to attend. You then have to select a major. Easier classes are stuff like Conferences and Majors (which I used in my demo run). But there are much harder majors to choose from for your player. You may need a tutor to help you if you need help. Keep your player's grades up and do your absolute best in practice. Great game. It's real fun.

I still have a number of gripes with the EA Sports' NCAA Football franchise. Read on to find out. Do you know why I like "College Hoops 2K6?" It's because many of the different schools are pretty much authentic with the arenas. Everything seems authentic though some areans look generic. What does that have to do with the NCAA Football game franchise? Almost all of the 1-AA stadiums are completely unauthentic and even generic. Take my hometown for example. The University of Houston plays their football at Robertson Stadium. But so does Texas Southern University just down the street from UH. But when you access Texas Southern's home field, you get this generic football field with trees and hills in the background. Another sad thing about this franchise? It seems more focused on 1-A, but 1-AA teams are there. You can only play in the Season mode for a Bowl Game bid and not the 1-AA playoffs. In addition, some conferences and teams are missing. There is the MAAC, Patriot League, Great West, and such are all missing. There are also other teams missing like Cal Poly, California-Davis, Georgetown, Saint Peter's, La Salle, Lehigh, Coastal Carolina, Northern Colorado, Jacksonville, Savannah State... need I go on? It's why I put a focus on both 1-A and 1-AA because I love football and real devoted. And as usual, some of the fight songs aren't real exact, especially on the 1-AA level. Even "College Hoops 2K6" introduced me to some new fight songs. Even non-football schools had fight songs for your ears to hear like former football school (ended 1993) Santa Clara, Gonzaga, DePaul, and even Georgia State. Among schools WITH football teams and fight songs include Idaho State, Missouri State, Texas State, Rhode Island, Butler, Indiana State, and even Lehigh. Other than that, these are the only college football games on the market. I'd love to see what 2K Sports would come up with while EA is hogging up all the money with their college football game. Show your school spirit with this game (granted your school has a football team)!

The first full Saturday of college football action is under way! I want to thank you all for reading my reports. I want to reward you for reading my reports by giving you a great assortment of college football to kick off the 2006 season. I'll try to get you scores, scores, and did I mention scores? Hopefully your favorite college or university will be featured. Any scores not listed can be found at some websites I'll share later. Read my synopsis of Saturday to get a general overview of what to look forward to.

WEEK 1 - SATURDAY SYNOPSIS
The new season's first Saturday mostly seen tough Division 1 teams play against members from lesser conferences as well as 1-A cupcakes. There is no preseason college football like in the NFL. But if there was, this week would sort of be like that. More critical matches come next week including Ohio State playing in Austin against Texas. Expect lots of offense from a number of teams as well as big wins. Three Division 1-A schools disappointingly lose to 1-AA schools while teams under 1-A have shamefully lost agaist teams under 1-AA. One 1-AA school even lost to a program not even in the NCAA. Excitment is all around as the season is back underway. Some succeeded, some failed. I have a LOT of games to share with you all. So get to reading!





DIVISION 1-A GAMES
Division 1-A games will begin with a BIG matchup in Atlanta. A lot of talk is going to be on the Notre Dame/Georgia Tech matchup and if Brady Quinn will be the next Heisman winner. We then go northwest to Knoxville, TN to see California's campaign begin. The next two scores after will feature the winner and runner-up (respectively) of the classic 2006 Rose Bowl. Let's go for it, shall we?

"Hello Heisman?" #2 Notre Dame at Georgia Tech (GAME OF THE DAY)
It's time for Brady Quinn and his boys to get back on the field and make some magic. The first Fighting Irish task is to take down Georgia Tech in Atlanta. But the Yellow Jackets won't sit down so kindly. Good start for Notre Dame? Or overhyped start for Notre Dame? We shall see. Georgia Tech was being beaten by Notre Dame. That beating ended up in a Fighting Irish win in a well-fought match. (14-10; Notre Dame)

"Rocky Top of the Mountain" #9 California at #23 Tennessee
Dial up a travel agent because we're going to Knoxville, TN! California will be on their way. Let's see who beats who in perhaps one of the best football matches this weekend. California is first. Berkley, CA is where you can find the University of California. Berkley is a northern California city not too far from beautiful San Francisco. Beautiful also describes their combination of blue and gold. California is a great rugby football school, having amassed a whole lot of championships. The Golden Bears look to translate their rugby football success to gridiron football success. Tennessee needs a better year. They went to nobody's Bowl Game last year. It was the first non-winning season since about 1987. I was about 4 years old when that happened. Over 100,000+ packed Neyland Stadium all Volunteering their efforts to upset California. It's an upset in terms of rankings if they succeed. And they did. A brief rally from California meant absolutely nothing to anybody in Volunteer Orange. Storm the court! I mean, bring down the goalposts! (35-18; TENNESSEE)

"Brave New World" North Texas at #2 Texas (<-Rose Bowl 2006 Winner and National Champion)
Northern Texas meets Central Texas in this Lone Star battle. It's called the Lone Star State for a reason. The football reason is because there can be only one dominant star. And Texas is that star. They will have to live without Vince Young knocking people on their asses with sensational play under center. This will be an easy test for Texas, but they have to be REALLY concerned with their game next week against Ohio State. The Longhorns will give anyone a long day. (56-7; TEXAS)

"Bootylicious" #6 Southern California (<- Rose Bowl 2006 Runner-Up) at Arkansas
How do you fill the shoes left behind by Leinart, White, and Bush? It can be hard. No wait... it IS hard. The primary question is if Southern California can find new stars. I bet you ladies will love the quarterback because his name is John David Booty. Yes, his surname is Booty. He's under center for the Trojans are ready to kick some... uh, booty in Fayetteville, AR. Did they get their money's worth? Arkansas hopes not to be fried bacon by Southern California. The Razorbacks hope to be razor-sharp in this game of Pac-10 vs. SEC. (50-14; Southern California)

"Like Blue on Rice" Houston at Rice (RIVALRY GAME - "Battle for the Bayou Bucket")
There are two big college games in Houston. This one is the 1-A match. GTPlanet, welcome to my hometown of Houston, Texas. I was born and raised in this great city. My brother is a proud alum of Houston. I may go to the University of Houston-Downtown looking to clear my Communications major since the Houston Community College System doesn't have a major program for Communications. So I might be a UH boy myself. A Japanese friend of mine had some time at Rice. Regardless, this is probably the biggest rivalry this Saturday. Houston and Rice flat out DON'T LIKE EACH OTHER. The two schools are maybe 5 miles apart. Any sport these two play in can be hellishly evil. As for Houston, they have Kevin Kolb (pronouned "cobb"), who may be a Heisman hopeful. His numbers are up there with Notre Dame's Brady Quinn. Notre Dame is more glamourous than Houston, but could the Cougars get antoher Heisman winner since Andre Ware? They need to win as many games as possible, even against their hated crosstown rival. Rice stinks in every sport except baseball. There may be change on the way courtesy of Major Applewhite as an Offensive Coordinator of the Owls to perhaps a winning season. Kolb says he's not buying into the Heisman talk just yet. Could he be up there? The Cougars had a BEAUTIFUL kickoff return which led to a short touchdown drive. The game ended up as a game of whose offensive motor can last longer than the other team's offensive motor. This game was basketball on grass. Houston took the lead with 10:28 in the 4th Quarter by leading 31-30. You can really sense that these two just don't want the other to win and are willing to fight for EVERYTHING. Go hard or go home. These guys could have gone out and partied in a happenin' place like Houston. But they chose to fight for everything they got. Houston has the Bayou Bucket, and Rice wants the Bayou Bucket. Rice gets picked off with about less than 2:30 left in the game. (-; )

* Vanderbilt at #14 Michigan
It's the first stop at the Big House. Vanderbilt nearly made the postseason last year, and Michigan made the postseason, albeit a less-than-stellar effort. It would be almost criminal to say Michigan is rebuilding themselves, but it's true. They lost in a poorly-officiated MasterCard Alamo Bowl last year to Nebraska. The Wolverines are usually never ANYONE's underdog. They ARE football. (27-7; MICHIGAN)

* Montana at Iowa
A sunny day in Iowa City, IA means football is in the air. The Big Sky's Montana meets the Big Ten's Iowa. Montana probably had to sit in the opposing locker room looking to stun Iowa. The Grizzlies are no 1-AA cupcake having played against the likes of James Madison for the title once. Iowa is a great team as well. It is a good team capable of some upsets. The Hawkeyes are looking to soar about everyone and leave all other teams in the dust and pushing up daisies. Montana had one golden touchdown. Iowa got MUCH more than that to win. (41-7; IOWA)

* Western Kentucky at #15 Georgia
Athens, Georgia is a football powerhouse. They also have a good women's basketball team while their men's team can passionately lose to teams like Florida and Kentucky and such. The Georgia Bulldogs came off of being stunned by the West Virgina loss in the 2006 Nokia Sugar Bowl. The Bulldogs will likely have a better season granted that they don't disappoint like Tennessee did. Going out east to Georgia is Western Kentucky. The boys from Bowling Green, KY are a Bluegrass team, but they wear red. The Hilltoppers are a Sun Belt team in basketball, while in the Gateway Football Conference in football. These boys from Bowling Green are looking to bowl over Georgia. Did they? The one idiotic move Georgia committed was celebrating early in an open field touchdown. I know Western Kentucky isn't a Division 1 powerhouse, but you still need to be composed and smart. You can't be doing that if you're going to return to a BCS Bowl Game, much less the postseason. They still win big. Just don't do that again in bigger matchups. (48-12; GEORGIA)

* Marshall at West Virginia
Two West Virginia groups are ready to set it off as Huntington meets Morgantown. And it was the Mountaineers getting it done over the Marshall Thundering Herd. (42-10; WEST VIRGINIA)

* Florida Atlantic at Clemson
It's the third year of FAU and FIU playing in Division 1-A. Florida Atlantic is looking to make it big in the 1-A ranks. But the Owls will have to be careful because they have a death wish. Actually, they are just going to meet the 1981 National Champions. Those 1981 boys would be Clemson University. The Tigers are meowing and purring to loving fans. But they are the National Geographic Channel come to life. They are viscious felines who fail to lay down. They didn't lay down once... well, maybe when FAU got that consolation touchdown or field goals. Clemson's 1-0, and Florida Atlantic is not. (54-6; CLEMSON)

* Louisiana Tech at Nebraska
It was 21-10 NEB at half, but the Cornhuskers smashed the Bulldogs of Louisiana Tech. (49-10; NEBRAKSA)

* Indiana State at Purdue
Indiana State was absolutely horrible last year in going 0-11. Can they break the losing skid in West Lafayette? Let's see. The Sycamores (pronounced like "sick-a-mores"") are a not-bad basketball school in the Missouri Valley Conference. I think they are part of the Gateway Football Conference in football. I may be wrong. (60-35; PURDUE)

* Montana State at Colorado
Montana State comes from Billings, MT. They are looking to give a scare to Colorado. I know very little about Montana as a state. I know there are rivals Montana and Montana State in 1-AA's Big Sky conference. The Fighting Bobcats will go down (or should I say up) to Colorado to play on beautiful Folsom Field. The University of Colorado is in a beautiful Rocky Mountain setting. The defending Big XII North champions are ready to stage their 2006 campaign. I'm sure Colorado won't lose 70-3 like they did in the Big XII Championship game last year against Texas. Just remember that the Colorado Buffaloes don't want to go into their Rivalry Game against Colorado State with a big loss. Or will they have to face reality? Under five minutes to go, Montana State was leading 16-10. That's right. The Fighting Bobcats looking to upset Colorado on beautiful Folsom Field. * Weber State at Colorado State
Today is the first game by a brand-new network in alliance with CSTV (College Sports Television) and Comcast called "The Mountain." It's the first network fully devoted to Rocky Mountain sports. This game was one of the first games to showcased on this network. A Utah school matches up agianst a Colorado school. The Rolex Sportscar Series was racing in Toole, UT in their nine-hour race. One team from Utah left. Orem, UT proudly presents Weber State University. Please note that "Weber" is pronounced with a long "E" sound. It's not "Weber" as in Chris Webber. But more like "wee-ber" state. The purple-clad Wildcats are up against a talented MWC team. That team would be Colorado State. Rocky Mountain high describes Colorado State as these Rams know how to play football. These Rams have uniforms similar to (get ready, JFM_Racer92!) the St. Louis Rams, only that the primary color is dark green and not dark blue. But who knows? Maybe there's a little Marshall Faulk and Torry Holt up in Colorado. Let's see if ColSU gets it done. Since Colorado lost against Montana State, this could a WONDERFUL oppurtunity to get some momentum playing against Colorado next week. (30-6; COLORADO STATE)

I'm sorry if you're feeling sad. Cheer up, because we're going to Happy Valley! And Pennsylvania State couldn't have been happier since last season's amazing season. If they didn't lose as Michigan, they would have played for the National Title against either Southern California or Texas. The Navy Blue and Vanilla White (vanilla... yummy!) are ready to impress 79-year old and Hall of Famer, Joe Paterno, yet again. They are more than just lions. They are the Nittany Lions. Whatever Nittany is or means still remains a mystery to me. Ohio welcomes Akron. Their home stadium is the Rubber Bowl. Maybe they didn't need a plane to go around. They all probably used a MASSIVE rubber band to fly through the air and Zip their way into Penn State. Okay, so maybe they didn't. Time to Zip the football down the field becaues the Akron Zips are ready to seal the lips of Penn State fans shut. Did they succeed? Let's find out together. You damn skippy, hiippie! There is only one power in Potato Land- Boise State. Idaho is one of the youngest WAC schools. Moscow, Russia is the world's newest Most Expensive City beating out Tokyo. Moscow, ID has lots of potato love to give to all of us. I'll need to pick up a bag of Four Cheese Cheez-It. Idaho's ready to start some trouble. Time yet again for them to Vandal their way through every team they meet- even if they have to go to Michigan against a Big Ten team. Yeah. Bad to the bone. So is Michigan State. * Northern Illinois at #1 Ohio State
The #1 preseason-ranked Buckeyes of Ohio State are looking to keep a good thing going. They did just that by shutting up the Northern Illinois Huskies. (35-14; OHIO STATE)

* Rutgers at North Carolina
This match is a long time coming. The last time they played each other was WAY back in 1919! World War 1 was taking place when these two first locked eyes. Who'll win this time? Rutgers is The State University of New Jersey. They came off of their first Bowl Game bid since the late 1970s. They sadly lost to Arizona State in the 2005 Insight Bowl. Nwo the Scarlet Knights are looking to return to the postseason as their campaign begins in Chapel Hill, NC. It's a stroll down Tobacco Road. North Carolina isn't high... they're low. Low on intimidation, incredible talent, and low on peoples' radars as to their chances of making the postseason. I do say that North Carolina and Connecticut are sort of on the rise. The Tar Heels aren't a football power as they are in basketball. They need to buckle down and play like they mean it. But did they do that against Rutgers? Close. Scarlet Knights win. * Richmond at Duke
Now let's meet North Carolina's rival in Durham- Duke. Be VERY afraid when you play in Cameron Indoor Stadium where Duke dominates half-court, full-court, 3-man weave, 1-4 High, and all that good stuff. But in football, they're worse than North Carolina. Coach K isn't going to be able to save Duke's asses on the gridiron because he's still greiving over Team USA losing in the FIBA semifinals to Greece. The Blue Devils can still play any NCAA-sponsored and sanctioned sport. Now let's meet the other team. It takes some guts to play for Richmond and have your nickname after an arachnid. Richmond has a nice basketball team in the Atlantic 10. I'm sure they will have their football played in the CAA now that the Atlantic 10 will not sponsor football after this year. The Spiders are looking not to get washed out in Blue Devil waters. Ouch... that didn't sound right. Moving on... Duke is one of the sorriest sacks of good-for-nothings in the nation. Coach K, your Blue Devil football team needs guidance! So yet another Division 1-A team joins Colorado in the "I Lost to a 1-AA School in Week 1" club. (13-0; Richmond)

* William and Mary at Maryland
Towson and Maryland was rained out in women's college soccer. Would the weather hold up when the University of Maryland and The College of William and Mary go at it? A Virginia college meets a Maryland university. The College of William and Mary is a proud football-playing Tribe. But fear the turtles! Fear the Terrapins! Did William and Mary and their team heed the warning? Not at all... and the Tribe paid for it. (21-1?; MARYLAND)

* Hawaii at Alabama
Aloha! It means hello, but also goodbye. We have Hawaii trying to dodge Hurricane John in getting to Alabama. Let's meet the teams. The University of Hawaii, to my knowledge, is the ONLY NCAA school to have a football team. And they are a good one. Whoever can forget the triple overtime game between Hawaii and Houston a few years back? Hawaii won the game, Houston won the brawl afterwards. ^_^ Call them Hawaii or Hawai'i. They are a proud WAC football team and are ready to show it to Alabama. As I said, only Hawaii has a football team. Not the Chaminade Silverswords. Not the BYU-Hawaii Seasiders. Not the Hawaii Pacific Sea Warriors. And not the Hawaii-Hilo Vulcans (all of which can be found in the non-football Pacific West Conference). But the Hawaii Warriors (even called Rainbow Warriors) are going to win as much as they can without Timmy Chang under center. It was 15-3 at the half for the Alabama boys. Alabama wins by eight. * Virginia at Pittsburgh
Hines Field is a lovely place to play football. The Pittsburgh Steelers play there on Sundays, but the University of Pittsburgh plays there on Saturdays. ACC meets the Big East. It would be a classic match in basketball among conferences, but we're talking about football here. Meaning that you won't see Georgetown (Patriot League), Villanova (Atlantic 10), Notre Dame (football independent), St. John's (non-football), Seton Hall (non-football), Providence College (non-football), DePaul (non-football), and Marquette (non-football) mentioned in Big East football. The Pittsburgh Panthers are every bit as good in football as they are in basketball. Their foottball team has slumped since Dave W. took control of the Panther football squad. They can make it better starting with this game. The Panthers did just fine. Thank you very much. (38-13; PITTSBURGH)

* Southern Mississippi at #7 Florida
The National Champs of D1 Men's Basketball are Florida. But the footballin' Gators were ready to set it off with Southern Miss. The Golden Eagles were fool's gold to Gainesville's Gators. (34-7; FLORIDA)

"You Dropped a Bomar on Me" Alabama-Birmingham at Oklahoma
No Rhett Bomar here. Bomar transfered from Oklahoma to Sam Houston State (I'll have the results from Sam Houston State if I get any SHSU scores). The Blazers looked to get it done, but the Oklahoma Sooners won by a touchdown when it seemed like the Sooners would lose. Nice comeback by the Crimson and Cream. (24-17; OKLAHOMA)

* Missouri State at Oklahoma State
The Missouri Valley Conference are looking to spring an upset and make the NCAA playoffs... oh, wait. Wrong sport. Missouri State (formerly Southwest Missouri State) is looking to uproot OK State. The Bears didn't get the upset. Instead, the Cowboys saved the day. (52-10; OKLAHOMA STATE)

* Murray State at Missouri
The Racers of Kentucky's Murray State ran out of fuel and DNF'ed as Missouri had the flag-to-flag victory. (47-7; MISSOURI)

* The Citadel at Texas A&M
The Aggies didn't get a shutout, but they did get a blowout win over The Citadel's Bulldogs. (35-3; TEXAS A&M)

* Utah at UCLA
I saw a woman wearing a shirt that said "Utah... but I'm Taller." Still not as funny as "Idaho? No, Udaho!" Racing action at Miller Motorsports park in Toole means that Utah will see their fans going to Los Angeles, CA. The Utes went undefeated under Urban Meyer, but no title to show for it. Now let's meet UCLA. You can call UCLA the North Carolina of the west... in basketball at least. They have a great football team, too. Maybe not the best in the Pac-10, however. The Bruins can still play ANY sport in the land. They REALLY played football in winning this game. (31-10; CALIFORNIA-LOS ANGELES)

* McNeese State at South Florida
South Florida's postseason seen them lose 14-0 against North Carolina State in the Meineke Car Care Bowl. Now the Bulls from Tampa Bay, Florida is ready to get her done in the Sunshine State. They have to do it against McNeese State. The Cowboys are ready to return to Louisiana with a big win over the Big East. When's the last time you heard of a Southland team beating a team from a big conference? Do any of you remember Northwestern State beating Iowa in last season's March Madness? No upset here. DIVISION 1-AA GAMES
We begin with a rivalry game and a potential upset.

* Prairie View A&M vs. Texas Southern (RIVALRY GAME; Reliant Stadium - Houston, TX)
Let's start with a rivalry here in Houston. I listened to not much of the game on the radio. All I know is that late, the Texas Southern Tigers banged in a field goal late to make it 17-14. And for the first time in three years, the Texas Southern Tigers start the season at 1-0. TexSoU proven me wrong. DEAD wrong. I thought Prairie View A&M would win by three touchdowns. Just goes to show you. You can analyze all you want, but it all comes down to who gets it done when the analysis ends. (17-14; Texas Southern)

"Jack-sonville of All Trades" Jacksonville State at #5 Furman
Let's go to Greenville, South Carolina and Furman University. Furman is one of the finest football schools in 1-AA. But they are matched up against Jacksonville State of the Ohio Valley Conference. Only thing I know about Greenville is that Furman Paladins are out making a difference in the classroom and the football field. These young warriors couldn't have been any more proud to see football season return. They'll have to deal with Jacksonville State. Jacksonville does not mean Jackonville in Florida. Instead, this is an Alabama school. There is SOME lineage with Jacksonville State and South Carolina because the Jacksonville State crew call themselves the Gamecocks. Certainly they are game enough to go to SC and get it started. When I got home, Furman landed a touchdown with 28 seconds left in the game. Sounds like the Rose Bowl? It does in ways. And just like that game, the one who last scored won the game eventually. That's what Furman did as they survived the Gamecocks. (17-13; FURMAN)

* Grambling State at Hampton
I am an African-American. So it's nice to see some black college football being represented here among the nation's two finest Black College Football conference. Grambling State needed to hit a PAT to make it a Double Overtime, but Hampton blocked it. And Hampton's regular season winning streak continues. The Pirates are many games away from making the postseason yet again while Grambling State's hopes are still good. (27-26, OT; HAMPTION)

* Florida A&M at Delaware State
Just lay back while Delaware State's Hornets whip up on the Florida A&M Rattlers. It's actually an upset in Division 1-AA. It's a big win. (34-14; DELAWARE STATE)

Massachusetts is one of the finest athletic programs in all of America. But they will be tested by Colgate of the Patriot League. Colgate wears red and operates out of Hamilton, New York. The Raiders were on a mission going into Massachusetts. The Massachusetts city in question is Amherst, MA. We're talking about Amherst and not the February birthstone on Amethyst(?). The Minutemen need sixty minutes to prove they are among 1-AA's elite. No sweat for Massachusetts as these boys got it done by three TD's. (28-7; MASSACHUSETTS)

"The Other Blue Devil Meat" Marist at Central Connecticut State
New Britain, Connecticut is where we are for this game as New York's Marist came down to Central Connecticut State University. Let's see who will win. Marist can be found in Poughkeepsie, NY. This Metro-Atlantic Athetic Conference team are known as the Red Foxes. Red is the color of blood, something these Red Foxes are smelling in Connecticut. It's a new season in New Britain. Central Connecticut State University is ready to go. These Blue Devils have blue blood and ice water veins. They also have nerves of steel. Would it all pay off in the end? You bet, player! * Virginia State at Norfolk State
The Virginia State Panthers of Division 2's CIAA lost big at Norfolk State. The Spartans were beautiful in this one. (29-14; NORFOLK STATE)

The Jacksonville team may be known as the Dolphins, but they are already floundering thanks to the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs. (49-14; Gardner-Webb)

* Albany at Lehigh
This is the first of two close shaves. The Great Danes of Albany shut down the Lehigh Mountain Hawks. (17-16; Albany)

* Davidson at VMI
Fall in line, maggots! The Keydets knew the key to winning- win any way you can. Must be sad for Davidson College to see their Wildcats lose by a penny. (20-19; VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE)

* Charleston Southern at Presbyterian
The Buccaneers took down the Blue Hose of South Carolina's Presbyterian College. (21-13; Charleston Southern)

* Lafayette at Sacred Heart
Sacred Heart's Pioneers couldn't engineer a win over the Leopards of Lafayette College. (25-14; Lafayette)

* California-Davis at Northern Colorado
The Aggies of the University of California-Davis thumped the Bears of Northern Colorado. (38-7; California-Davis)

* Bloomsburg at James Madison
James Madison was going to be upset, but the Dukes shook off Bloomsburg with two touchdowns. (14-3; JAMES MADISON)

* Holy Cross at Georgetown
Georgetown University is a good basketball school in the Big East, but the Hoyas of the Patriot League were doubled up by Holy Cross. Two teams with National Championships in Men's basketball went at it, and the 1947 basketball champs won this game as the Crusaders doubled up Georgetown. (26-13; Holy Cross)

* Monmouth at Fordham
The Monmouth Eagles flown into New York City to meet Fordham. The Eagles took a big bite out of the Big Apple by taking down the Rams of Fordham. (23-9; Monmouth)

* Morgan State at Towson
Morgan State isn't a very good unit in football and basketball. The Bears were ousted by Towson. Only thing Morgan State got was a safety on the Tigers. (30-2; TOWSON)

* Winston-Salem at North Carolina A&T
The CIAA should be proud of Winston-Salem taking down the North Carolina A&T Aggies. (41-14; NORTH CAROLINA A&T)

* Alabama A&M at Tennessee State
The Tennessee State Tigers of the Ohio Valley Conference were no match for the SWAC's Bulldogs of Alabama A&M. I believe music artist Raphael Saddiq (Tony Tone Toni, and Lucy Pearl) is a proud alum, so I'm sure he's proud of his Bulldogs getting it done. (27-20; Alabama A&M)

* Savannah State at Benedict
Savannah State sucks in just about every major sport they play. They lose to teams not even in the NCAA. They are simply the worst atheltics program in all of America. When they win a game, it's the only reason to care about Savannah State. It's what keeps them into the game. The Tigers need more than good players. They may need a brand new beginning for football and basketball. It's no wonder why they are Independents. Benedict is part of the SIAC conference. * Montana Tech at Southern Utah

WEEK IN REVIEW
I will make my picks concerning what teams did best and worst. Get ready for everything from big wins to saddening losses. I may show a little more emotion in my reviews.


BIGGEST WIN(S) OF THE WEEK:
(1) Texas Southern Goes from Loser to Winner in One Night - Texas Southern University used to be dreadful. I didn't go to the game. All I do know is that Texas Southern is a horrible football team. The Tigers are the worst in the SWAC and went winless last year. Now they get a big win, and especially a win over a rival is big regardless of what takes place. The Maroon Mean Streak is looking good after Week 1. (2) Shorter (NAIA) Downs Brevard Bigtime Brevard College lost one against an NAIA school. Sad.

MOST DISAPPOINTING LOSS(ES) OF THE WEEK:
(1)Duke Can't Even Beat a 1-AA Team This is sad. I know Duke is a basketball school, but even Duke's BASKETBALL team can b:censored:slap Richmond in hoops. Men OR women. Here, not only do they lose to a 1-AA team, they get shut out by one. Completely sad. Somebody needs to be fired and a proven coach needs to get in there instead of the coach dying of a heart attack in trying to get Duke to play fundamental football. Absolutely outrageous and inexcusable. Duke isn't upholing ACC football like true professionals. They represent one of the strongest conferences in college football and lose like this to a 1-AA school. I don't know what the hell happened here, but it's the saddest thing I've ever seen. No excuse for losing this game. (2) California doesn't play like a #9 Team in Tennessee - California was beaten by Tennessee. The reason why I haven't fully credited California is because I simply don't know about them. Tennessee was just amazing. I can't call it an upset because Tennessee is a quality team.

UPSET(S) OF THE WEEK:
Montana State Defeats Colorado - Montana State got their first win over a 1-A school in over 22 years. It's the damndest crime wave Colorado faced. Montana State took down Colorado. This is why you never assume that 1-A teams will always win games against 1-AA teams and lower. If in college basketball that Chaminade can beat Virginia and Alaska-Anchorage can beat Wake Forest, then ANYTHING is possible. Teams in 1-A losing to 1-AA or lower or non-NCAA is a rare occurance. Nothing is a given. It's why I take games like this seriously in the event of an upset. You need to win ALL your games, even against teams you can easily win against. Forget about that game in Knoxville, TN. This was the REAL upset.

OWNAGE OF THE WEEK
Central Missouri State Embarasses Lincoln 78-0 - Central Missouri State went on the road in an attempt to beat Lincoln at home. Division 2 schools don't have the ten-thousands of fans like in a 1-A powerhouse, but I wonder how many empty seats there were at Lincoln. The Central Missouri State Mules SMASHED Lincoln University. So for 2006...

Lincoln University = OWNED!!!



JOHN's NOTES
--- SHORTER GAMES? ---
There's all this talk about making football games shorter. That's why there are new rules where the clock moves right after a kick or after a final timeout is used. I like a good football game. Let it go all night long!

--- THE NEW LOOK RICE AND TEXAS SOUTHERN FINALLY WINS ---
Rice looked VERY capable against the Houston Cougars. Houston may have shot themselves in the foot with penalties, but the Coogs still managed to win. Rice is going to be tour de force in Conference USA if they keep up the goof work they did- even in a losing effort. As for Texas Southern... how did they win? Why did they win? They did it somehow. I'm proud of the Texas Southern Tigers in beating their in-state rivals in the SWAC. Hell of a job.

--- 1-AA WINS OVER 1-A ---
I know I get carried away a bit on 1-A teams losing to teams not in the 1-AA, but it's pretty good to see the lower division schools beat 1-A schools. It shows that not every of these games can end in cupcake performances. Way to play football!

The big one for next week will be the game between Kentucky and Louisville for Bluegrass bragging rights. Will Louisville continue to deliver? Will Kentucky make plenty of magic happen? Those results in my next thread!

Montana had one golden touchdown. Iowa got MUCH more than that to win. (41-7; IOWA)

Yea, we couldn't stop the flow of TDs pouring out. They did score once, but oh well. We were all the way down to the 3rd-string QB at one point, and very few starters in, and even then we couldn't NOT score. I think we have a chance to be VERY good this year. I said that a bit last year, and we didn't. So, I'm not going to make this more than it really was. We played good against a not so good team, and won big. End of story. Though the outlook is nice.

I have to be honest, I don't follow a lot of D2 and D3 stuff. But, being here in town, there has been quite a lot of press the last few years about UNO. I knew a couple kids that played a couple years ago, and they talked very well about the program. I don't honestly know what to expect this year. But, in the coming years, they should become a very good program.

Overall, they are doing VERY well with just about all their athletic programs. The girls soccer team is REAL good, along with the volleyball team. For the longest time around here, sadly all you ever heard about was the Huskers. But now, thankfully, all the teams at UNO are getting better and better, and we have something to get fired up for. Its nice that we don't always have to hear Husker crap all the time.

Here in Houston, we have a SERIOUS dark horse. The Houston Cougars QB, Kevin Kolb, had sort of a less-than-stellar game in a 31-30 win over crosstown and conference rival Rice. He's been efficient with most of his passes. He's one of the few threats barely anyone outside of Houston or watching CSTV (College Sports Television) knows about. If he somehow wins the Heisman, Kolb will be the first Houston Cougar to win the Heisman since Andre Ware won it back in 1989.

"Rocky Top of the Mountain" #9 California at #23 Tennessee

Cali-who? What the heck were the preseasons ranking guys thinking? 9th in the nation my butckus. While I hate Tennessee when Kentculy plays them I still cheer on my SEC teams (begrudingly in this case) and California might as well have not shown up.

* Western Kentucky at #15 Georgia
Athens, Georgia is a football powerhouse. They also have a good women's basketball team while their men's team can passionately lose to teams like Florida and Kentucky and such. The Georgia Bulldogs came off of being stunned by the West Virgina loss in the 2006 Nokia Sugar Bowl. The Bulldogs will likely have a better season granted that they don't disappoint like Tennessee did. Going out east to Georgia is Western Kentucky. The boys from Bowling Green, KY are a Bluegrass team, but they wear red. The Hilltoppers are a Sun Belt team in basketball, while in the Gateway Football Conference in football. These boys from Bowling Green are looking to bowl over Georgia. Did they? The one idiotic move Georgia committed was celebrating early in an open field touchdown. I know Western Kentucky isn't a Division 1 powerhouse, but you still need to be composed and smart. You can't be doing that if you're going to return to a BCS Bowl Game, much less the postseason. They still win big. Just don't do that again in bigger matchups. (48-12; GEORGIA)

While my degree says University of Kentucky I did spend three years at WKU before transferring and so I have a soft place in my heart for the Hilltoppers. A friend of mine was even Big Red for a year. He got me down on the field with him and I got to hang out with the cheerleaders. It was good gig.

Anyway, while Georgia was celebrating early we can't go without mentioning WKU's Henderson making an early celebration on his punt return only to drop the ball and have it roll out of bounds. I couldn't stop laughing. He made up for it later with another return but one man's ego cost them six (probably 7) points. It wasn't a game changer but it would have kept people aware that WKU is a good team in their conference not to be messed with.
