BMW 540i

The Infiniti is butt-ugly, the Audi (as much of an Audi fan as I am) is hardly "sporty" with it's null feedback, and the S-Type will never be a true Jaguar so long as it's mostly Lincoln-LS-based. The BMW, on the other hand, is as great a ride as any BMW, as well built as the Audi, and almost as luxurious as the Jaguar. As for cost...well, you'd probably have to pay me to be seen in the M45.

Depends on what u want. I dont think the infiniti is all that ugly. Its got a whoooole lot more HP compared to the rest. Its MUCH more affordable than the BMW, and has more cargo room.

I would rank them:
1. Audi A6
2. BMW 540
3. Jaguar S-Type
4. Infiniti M45

We don't get the Infiniti here. I would wager that if we did, it would sell in low volumes and suffer heart-attack depreciation.

Seriously, cars like that do not go down well in the UK. I think the only way to make it depreciate faster would be to drive it into a wall.

I like the Audi the best. I agree with the general consensus that the Infiniti is horrible looking. My aunt has one of the Jaguars. It is pretty luxurious and comfortable, but it never seemed very sporty. I personally do not really like the BMW. It looks the same as every other BMW to me.

I forgot to mention that you people were supposed to forget how these cars looked. Hooligan's only reason for hating it is that it's butt-ugly. That seems to be mark2080's, advanR's and BMW POWER's only opinion on it, too. What about the fact that it's more powerful, cheaper, has more room, and has a better overall warranty?

It's funny to me that several people have voted 540i, too - the most expensive, oldest, and least powerful. Hmmm... some people are brand lackeys.

its also the lightest.

i have actually driven a bmw 5 series. i find bmws very tight. of the above cars, it is definately the most sporty.

i dont really care about top power. maybe we could get some 0-60 and 1/4 mile times printed up for people to see, that would help.

also, you never mentioned looks shouldnt be considered. when im researching cars to purchase, i certainly do.

i seem to be a bmw brand lackey. but for each car i look at them differently. i dont automatically choose the bmw. it just usually works out that way.

But see 'sporty' is another of those vague categories like 'plasticy' that no-one can back up with some statistics.

Yahoo! didn't have those, but I'll have a look for them and post them.

Why does it matter what a car looks like?

im actually looking at a current road and track right now. i will post times in a second.

why do looks matter? why dont they? i dont at all consider myself superficial, I consider looks among other things. i wouldnt pick a great looking car with 100hp over a butt ugly one with 500hp. i try to consider it somewhere in there though. if i find the m45 is much quicker i might consider it over the 540.

sporty means tightness. steering response. overall drving feel.

Okay, cool, because cars.com and Yahoo don't have it and MSN Carpoint won't load.

Gir. Styling really shouldn't matter very much in consideration for a car if it's practical.

sporty means tightness. steering response. overall drving feel.

Except for tightness, you do realise that these categories are extremely subjective, right?

road & track says:

M45
------
6.1 0-60
14.6@96.8mph

A6 4.2
---------
8 0-60
16.1@85mph

540i
-------
not listed, still looking

S type
-----------
6.8 0-60
15.1@82.5mph

It's hard to say... the 540 and the A6 are pretty dull, not to mention there's basically no styling difference between the A4 and the A6, save for the size... The 5 serie's starting to show its age, and the new model is gonna look like a shrunken 7 series (read: butt ugly). The Jag's nothing more than a Lincoln LS, it's overpriced for what it is...

Which leaves the M45. Not exactly the best looking thing on the road, but certainly not the ugliest. It's a better bargain than the others, for sure, when you look at the numbers, at least. None do it for me, honestly... what about a second hand M5? or an E55?

What about the new Benz E-Class, did you forget it? The Lexus GS430?

You're joking, right?!

If a car is practical, great, but if it also resembles the crack of my ass...:irked:

So this is pretty fair - the M45 owns the two not really in comparison as far as power. Can't wait for that 540i stat. :D

I've been trying to preach this for years, and no-one listens.

Form after function. People actually purchase the Volkswagen Beetle based on ONE SINGLE condition. Don't eliminate a car just because you think that it doesn't look good - especially if it's all around near-perfect for everything else you want it for.

And it really isn't too distinctive, either - with the other cars, people know you're driving around in something by far worth more than the rest of the range. With the 4.2, there's the alloy wheels and the 4.2 badge. Doesn't much make it worth spending the extra.

exactly. i dont consider only looks. that would be stupid. but i do consider it. if the m45 is much better in other areas, i might consider it over the 540i. but this is all fake, so.............

my mother bought a 1992 audi 100S for $6000 about a year ago. it looks pretty much the same as even todays S8. which costs over 10 times as much..........

To very roughly quote Top Gear: "The BMW 5 Series is quite possibly the finest automobile in the world."

The M45 doesnt come in manual.

The A6 doesnt come in manual.

The S-Type doesnt come in manual.

'Nuff said.

Yeah, what's the story there? Not enough enthusiasts getting the S-Type to justify a manual transmission? Seems strange.
