Because PS4 and Xbox One threads tend to go into console wars direction (which is not wanted)

This is not a XB1 vs PS4 thread, so I would strongly suggest members do not try and turn it into one.

Anyone interested in such a discussion can start a thread dedicated to just that.

Anyone failing to do that may find they are unable to post for a while.

I thought it`s time to open an official console discussion wars thread.

Which console is better and why?

Be gentle!
Don`t put it on a personal level!

Have fun!

P.S.: This thread obviously is for the current console war. Poll includes all generations of consoles though. I just skipped some obviously not so important systems.

Skipped systems (from my knockledge level):

Channel F
Sega SG-1000
Amstrad GX4000
Vectrex
Philips G7000
Nintendo Color TV-Game 6
Hanimex HMG 2650
Action Max
PC Engine
NEC SuperGrafx
SNK Neo-Geo
Philips CD-i
Commodore CDTV
Apple/Bandai Pippin
Commodore CD32
Panasonic 3DO
Nintendo iQue Player
NEC PC-FX

Hit me with missing gems.

I would give the edge to ps4 so far for games. I've got both systems and have compared several games side by side and the ps4 version looks a good bit better. Using ghosts the PS4 version looks much better. I also like the UI of the ps4 better. The Xbox just feels cluttered. Also I give the controller edge to PS4. I don't care fur the triggers or bumpers at all on the Xbox.

I have no idea about kinect or the multi media abilities for either console. I couldn't care less about anything but the games.

I picked dream cast. Would have picked 3DO if you had it in the list. It was way ahead of the competition just like the dream cast.

I do hope this stays friendly! Maybe removing "wars" might be better!

I went for Snes, Megadrive and PS2, in that order. Atari Lynx (despite its flaws and being a handheld) and PC Engine get honourable mentions as well.

3DO as console on which Need for Speed started... Worth being mentioned. I agree.

Added "discussion" to title, kept "wars" :D

No love for the GCE Vectrex?

How come there's no 'Neo Geo'? (Not that iv'e ever played one.. console form that is). :D

[EDIT]

Voted NES by mistake instead of SNES for one of my votes.

I am aware that there are very specific preferences. But I didn`want an endless list - long enough I guess.
But feel free to mention your (forgotten) system and glorify it with specs, games and pics.

To a mod: Could one please correct my poll typo "Atarti 2600 / 5200" into "Atari 2600 / 5200" and add Xbox 360 to the list?

EDIT: Thany you, Sir Scaff

The Panasonic 3DO is underrated, was an awesome piece of kit for the early 90's. It was like the Rolls Royce of games consoles and priced like one with an eye watering price of $1,130 in today's money. Had awesome games like GEX :sly:

Good call on a one point discussion thread for console comparisons, especially as the inevitable comparisons and cross discussion began to appear on the other threads.

The Wii U despite being underpowered compared to the other two big consoles, is a fine system - quiet, fast and really beginning to pick up now that the third-part developers are joining in. I suppose they were wary at first due to what happened with the Wii. I know that Miiverse could be more flexible and have better options for sharing screenshots, but I still like it.

Of the big two though, I'm only getting the PS4 as it suits what I want a console for. It also seems to be a solid step forward into a new generation, which I'm sure the XbOne is too but I have no investment in the exclusives coming to that platform - I am very much looking forward to next weekend :)

Now that the list is "complete" I may write down my thoughts.

As child I enjoyed playing with my brother the

Interton VC4000 (yeah, I am that old and played Pong in the late 70ies) - cartridges (that`s what discs where called these days) were expensive as hell, games were simple you cannot imagine nowadays.

ColecoVision was my next console and I remember well playing Donkey Kong, Zaxxon and others. I had the steering wheel for a racing game. Mindblowing peripheral gimmick these days. A young racer was born.

No Atari, no Nintendo system. I went PC with Commodore 128D (a barely portable portable computer) and Amiga 2000.

Back to consoles with PlayStation 1, which I played very much, Tomb Raider series, Resident Evil series, Gran Turismo 1+2, Ridge Racer to name a few.

I received a Sega Dreamcast from Sega Germany (because of a cooperation with my previous employer) with Virtua Tennis and Shen Mue mostly played on it.

Paused gaming a bit, pursued hobby a bit on PCs only.

PS3 was bought for playing GT5 - somewhat of 100 games at the moment .

Console collection was upgraded during the last years with Atari 2600, Atari 7800, Xbox 360 and Wii U.
Guess I will get a 1st gen Wii and a NES and/or SNES.

Overall my experiences in my childhood are still alive. Vote for this period goes to ColecoVision. Next period was dominated by PS1. Gaming today is PS3 for me. So votes go to PS1 and PS3.

Next gen console = I don`t know. Probably PS4 but you`ll never know. Decision will be made some day in 2014.

This thread makes me feel young :P

PS4 vs Xbone can't be decided now, I always maintain that the Playstation brand has the better games due to it's insane lineup of studio talents at their disposal.

I voted for the NES, SNES, Genesis (Mega Drive), PS2, and Xbox 360. All based on software, because good hardware is pointless without good software! Super Mario Bros, Megaman, Kirby, the Legend of Zelda, the original Sonic trilogy, Gunstar Heroes, Final Fantasy I through VI, Chrono Trigger, Super Metroid, Secret of Mana, Gran Turismo 3, Enthusia, Forza Motorsport 4, Forza Horizon...all those and many more have given me countless hours of enjoyment over the years.

I've also greatly enjoyed a number of titles for N64, Gamecube, Wii, XBOX, PS1, and a handful elsewhere...but the systems I voted for cover my all-time top favorites.

For sure, I still have mine hooked up to my TV and still play it from time to time for nostalgia sake. I used to love Ocean's Below and Starfighter.

As for the best console? That's hard, but I don't think any of the current generation systems can even begin to top some of the older systems in terms of games. New games are good, but they still focus way to much on how they look instead of how they play. If I have to go with best console, it would be either the SNES or Genesis followed closely by the N64 and the original PS.

I enjoyed the Mega Drive and PS1 more than a NES, Master System or Atari 2600.

In the UK we had the BBC micro, ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, Commodore 64 plus the Amiga 500 and Atari ST all doing well so the 80s was mostly Personal Computer that me and friends had with the Master System being the dominant console. Mega Drive and SNES seem to change that.

Very hard to choose between Mega Drive and PS1, Megadrive had a very good list of 2 player games that we played but PS1 brought in MGS, Resident Evil, Gran Turismo, FF7 single player experiences

If the best console is judged by it's games, it would be ridiculous to come to any conclusion on the just been/soon to be released ones. With firmware updates in the picture, it's even difficult to judge the new consoles purely on their hardware. Not that I would know enough about hardware anyway.

Judging on games available: PS1 for me.

PS3 is my most used console so far and I love it but PS4 is going to replace it I am sure.

I also have PS2 slim but not played too many games in it. I love PS2 HD collection with trophies support :D I hope they redo the graphics on PS4 too :) Nostalgia wise the earlier console will always be great and now next gen console are trying to emphasis too much on online and sharing stuff. PS4 is trying to be Facebook  However I will simply take screenshot and may be make some videos too. Not interested in twitch and all that. PS4 design and performance wise is the best console ever IMO and the DS4 looks sexy. Though it will drain fast as charge does not last more than 8-9hrs. I will anyways get 2 controllers. All thing considered I think PS4 has very good chance to be the best console ever.

Since the PS4 and X1 both launched with 1 million it looks like it will be a close battle for a little while. I still predict that within 3 years the X1 will outsell the PS4. Not that it matters, but I still find it funny for those that went into rants bashing me saying the X1 would not even be close to the PS4. Especially the ones that said adding a blu ray player and dedicated servers would make no difference. The 2 systems are already this close and that's with the X1 costing $100 more than the PS4. AND with the PS4 selling a week before the X1. If they were the same price and launched at the same time, it wouldn't even be a close battle at all.

I cant vote in the thread yet because I dont have the X1. I plan to get the X1 in spring 2014. Hopefully most of the launch console problems have been worked out by then. Also hopefully Forza 5 will have more cars and tracks by then.

I am a lot older than most of the members here on GTPlanet. I was about 30 years old and about to get married when I bought my first Video Game Console. It was called the Fairchild Video Entertainment System - 1977, followed up by an Atari 2600 in 1978 and a ColecoVision in 1982. All three of these consoles were destroyed when a broken water pipe flooded our sunken living room in late 1982. I really thought that I was done playing video games until I was blown away by the 'impressive' graphics on a friend's NES in 1986. The NES - 1986 and more specifically, The Legend of Zelda in its golden cartridge rekindled my interest in video games. These initial systems were followed by:

Sega Genesis - 1988; TurboGrafx-16 - 1988; Super NES - 1990; Nintendo 64- 1996; Playstation - 1997; Playstation 2 - 2000; XBox - 2002 (only one game ever bought for this - The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind); Playstation 2 Slim - 2005; Gamecube (for my nephews) - 2005; Xbox360 - 04/05/06 (I never even finished the only game I ever bought for this console - The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion due to numerous scratched discs and three different console failures. I will forever be in debt to Best Buy and their Product Replacement Plan); Playstation 3 - 2006; Playstation 3 Slim - 2009; Playstation 4 - 2013.

My favorite console is the Playstation 3, and my Playstation 4 is working just fine straight out of the box. I am waiting, however, for the supposedly forthcoming system software update that will enable MP3 and DLNA playback on the Playstation 4. Only then might I consider the Playstation 4 to be a better console than the Playstation 3.

As usual, you're missing a key point. Microsoft sold 1m units in the first twenty four hours in 13 countries. The ps4 only released in the US and Canada, both of which were traditionally ms territory last gen yet still managed to shift 1 million units in twenty four hours.

You forgot to put this baby on the poll:

image.jpg

In fact, you forgot to put in a few handheld consoles, including the Nintendo Gameboy, the 2/3DS and the PSP/Vita

Sparky (PS2) and Sparky II (PS3) are my favorites. I had so much fun with the PS2 over the years that most of my nostalgia lies with it. The PS3 is most recent but it's cetainly right up there as one of the best consoles for it's time.
