Here's another constant for you:

Indecisive governing body.

The FIA announced overnight that it had changed its mind over the change in numbering for next year - so ignore the numbers I gave previously.

I haven't updated them as:
- I have no idea what the new numbers are
- the FIA may change its mind again and I ain't changing 'em twice...

how do they determine who receives each number

The constructors are allocated numbers according to where the lead driver finished in the championship.

M Schu won, so Ferrari get 1 & 2.
DC finished second, so McLaren get 3 & 4.

And so on - except there's no 13.

But Heidfeld finished ahead of Fisichella and the list you posted (even though you said ignore it) has Fisichella a few up on Heidfeld

Mmm...

Maybe it's the lead driver for a constructor.

No, wait, now I remember.

It goes on the order of constructors in the championship, except the champion driver always gets number 1 - when the champion retires the leading constructor gets 0 and 2.

The numbers then get allocated according to the finishing order in the constructors, so Jordan will be ahead of BAR, and Renault and Prost are down the bottom, with Minardi last except for Toyota who are new.

Depends on how good Sato is.

If he's as good as his F3 season suggests, Jordan might have a pretty good year. Fisichella will do a lot better now he's away from Briatore.

Renault could do okay if the motor's decent. They showed toward the end of the year the chassis was pretty solid. I rate Trulli very highly, and Button will be better for the experience last year, and showed some form last year.

I doubt Sauber will show as prominently, simply because I can't believe Jordan and BAR could have two years as bad as '01 in a row.

It might be a real log-jam for scraps behind Ferrari-McLaren-Williams.

The interesting one is McLaren - I'm inclined to think Raikkonen is there a year or two early. Still, he acquitted himself pretty well.

yeah ...Trulli should have his best season so far at Renault next season ......he's seems to be a better qualifier than racer though .....yeah BAR and Jordan better shape up fast ......and yeah again ......there's not going to be much food for the vultures after the pack of wolves eat their meal

I'm surprised Renault are keeping the tobacco sponsorship. There was a suggestion when they bought the team the first thing they were going to do for 2002 was pull the Mild Seven stuff off the car.

BAR really need to pull their finger out next year.

Have you been reading the 2001 season summaries for the teams at www.grandprix.com - very interesting reading. Apparently the Honda donk was pretty ordinary, especially in qualifying.

Things I'm looking for next year:
- Raikkonen at McLaren
- how will Minardi go with the Asiatech engine
- how will Arrows go with the Cosworth engine
- is Montoya going to show up Ralf properly this year?
- is Ralf going to behave more like a petulant little boy if Montoya does beat him?
- how are Jaguar going to blow it this year?

I think the championship's a foregone conclusion. DC's not tough enough to mount a full year challenge (which he proved again this year) and it's just too early for Raikkonen. Losing a double world champion will hurt developmet too.
I don't think Michelen will be consistent enough for Williams to mount a full title go either - and that will further hurt McLaren (they're on Michies remember) - plus Ralf seems determined to get a nice cosy 'Piquet-Mansell' thing going at Williams.

Mate it's not even time to finish work - about 4.45pm.

It used to be worse when I was living in Melbourne. I was literally across the road from the circuit, at Queens Road (my old apartment building is in most of the games), and I could watch them build the circuit - it seemed to make the waiting worse!

The best year was 95-96. We went to the Adelaide GP in November '95, and the Melbourne GP in March '96.

I was pretty blase about the Melbourne race until I heard Schumacher's Ferrari go past. Hair went up on the back of the neck, and I was a basket case...

It's hilarious when you go to an F1 race - Jos has a huge Dutch fan (well, they're probably not that big, but they're certainly LOUD) club that cheer in loud voices, 'HO, JOSIE, JOSIE, JOSIE' (pronounced yosie).

When you get to the pitwall after the race, they're almost louder than the cars!

I like Juan - very fast, he can pass, and he's got a bit of attitude about him. And he's giving Ralf a bad time (who's proving not to be the quiet acheiver he'd like everyone to think he is - fancy telling Frank Williams he needed team orders!)

Last year would have been incredibly lack luster if it wasn't for some of the agressive passing by Montoya. It almost seems the other drivers are affraid to challenge Micheal. I think the wheel to wheel racing of cart gives a driver a supreme confidence when it comes to passing. We've seen the same thing from Villeneuve. Insane passes that is. However Zanardi was just a pilon.
