Whenever I'm bored or don't have access to a racing sim or something, I try to imitate engine sounds. From BOVs to Hybrids to gear boxes. Not saying I can imitate it as perfect as to the counterpart, but I have been doing it for a long time. Now, I try to place the sounds on real-life tracks, based on what I know about the track. I would for to say take a Zonda F and pretend I'm driving it on Spa. I even "jump" inside the cockpit and steer and play out the gauges with my hands. I also attempt to chain in opponent's engine sounds, and create uproars. Usually I don't do this in public. I do it at home, or when I'm alone or when I have nothing for entertainment in my disposal. And since I do such for a while, I try to get the imitation as close as the decibels the engine produces. Of course, it does get noticed and I get a strange look on people's faces  But my family has seen & heard me do something like that for ages, so I'm guessing they're used to it. They aren't even worried if I'm hyper or anything. For me I don't find it a problem, nor does my family. None of my acquaintances really understand, though. I spend a lot of time just doing this, probably around 10-30 minutes tops. And in addition to engine sounds, I copy tire screeches, pit stop sounds, cockpit rumbles via shaking my head, elevation gaps, backfires, and so forth.

So for this, I'm asking if anyone does a similar activity, or if this is actually considered "normal". I have a love for cars and racing (that is what GTP is about, eh?) so I guess that's comprehensible as to why I do it. And if you are wondering, yes it is a bit embarrassing to imitate when someone is subtly nearby. But it has never impacted much in my background. Well, not in a long shot :P

And please don't make fun of this.

You may fill the following information if you are a believer of this impersonation:
Do I make car engine noises?

Do I drift shopping carts, while makine engine and tire noises?

Do I make car engine noises when playing with a Hot Wheel or Matchbox cars?

Do I make car or motorcycle noises with my electric guitar?

How old am I!?

Anybody here have a problem with that?

I like to make engine sounds, though I don't go to the extremes that you do. I prefer making rally car sounds above anything else.

I actually do it when my garage door is closing/opening and try to make the perfect sounding hum so I can't notice a difference between the sound of the garage door and my humming. Its quite cool once you get it perfect. I need a life...

Maybe if you were a few years younger, then it would be normal. At that age, it makes me wonder. I did this sort of thing when I was around 9-10, and so did a lot of people I know. :)

Making rally noises is brilliant, trying to perfect that blow off noise. And the pulling away from the camera noise, just out the corner of your mouth gradually getting quieter.

Not that I practised that..ever...

 I like to try to replicate the way the revs bounce up and down when the car's accelerating through a rough spot.

And struggling for traction through slippery sections. :D

Quite like doing F1 noise on guitar as well.

I ALWAYS do engine sounds, I can do a pretty good open headers V8 sound. I drag race my Hot Wheels with the sound too :dunce:

So you're good

But for me, I feel like this imitation will never go away, nor I really desire to disappear. Sometimes it can be calming to me, a way to distill my mood for the day.

And to Ashers and Veyron, I've been attempting rallying effects as well. Including the dirt swooshing over the tires, the impact when you jump over a gap, and so on. My head even feels like its dislocated from my neck when I'm done

I did the noises... When I was about 8. :P I admit to doing this maybe once or twice in recent times. But usually I just sit there doing driving movements and practising with H shifters (and heel and toe).

I take up commentating. :sly:

I thought everyone did this. It's like drifting shopping trollies. Or is it just me...?

I used to do that when I was little, because I could memorize tracks in GT.

Now I just imitate revving and ignitions from time to time. I was just leaving my cousin's house on Saturday and he was starting up his Golf. Without thinking I went "kitikit kitkitkitkitkit vruuum!"

I find Ignition sounds arousing. Then again, what kind of car guy are you if you don't?

edit: Daaaamn those F1 sounds on a guitar... I'm not an F1 guy but that was entertaining.

Or drift walking. Then when the grip jumps in again you snap back the other way almost walking into someone, hitting the wall and falling over.

+1 billion!!!

Making sounds is harmless with the only drawback being awkward moments when busted & no doubt a fair bit of drool so, in short, you're all good mate!

I have seen some truly abnormal things mate & you're well and truly in the normal category for now... until you marry your car or get caught molesting your copy of GT5, then you're in trouble

I drift trollies at work all the time

I only wished our store was structured differently; so I could do big wide high speed drifts and tackle S-corners.

I make F1/GT/LMP downshift noises when taking corners in my mums car. And I'm 16 and a half.

Drifting shopping carts? Oh yes. The ones where all 4 wheels spin make me feel like Ken Block

And I do a full 2 man commentary when I play F1 2011.

Ah, drifting shopping trolleys. A classic pastime for supermarket boredom.

I like to make engines in my own mind. Then I make the noises they would

I can't believe you all make your own noises... I have a team of 20 people who's sole purpose is to create engine, gearbox and tyre noises. :sly:

So while you're silently running down the aisles with your trolley, you got 20 people running after you, 3 making tire screeches, 8 making engine noise, 1 making exhaust blow offs, back fires etc, and the rest responsible for the transmission.

If you run from the cops you can make engine sounds, then scream the engine sound half way through.

Human VTEC.
