Corvette Z06 RM and ZR1 RM
I have noticed that these seem to be two of the most popular cars for GT class racing and the “like the wind” series. So based on this and the number of tunes available for both cars I decided to compile a review of the major tunes available for these cars. For these tests all cars will be run on the medium racing tyre with no assists except ABS set to 1 at High speed ring as I believe this track provides a good balance of corner types to test out the cars.
First of all the cars, I know there are differences in the base model and these do lead to two different race cars however once race modified there is little to separate these two cars, the reason for having both is to show the setups on the cars they were intended for. Both cars were maxed for the tests. The following are the basic specs of the cars used in these tests:

Corvette Z06 RM ‘06
Displacement: 6997cc
Power: 866 bhp
Torque: 102 KgFm
Weight: 1090 Kg

Corvette ZR1 RM ‘09
Displacement: 6162cc
Power: 883 bhp
Torque: 111 KgFm
Weight: 1100 Kg
Control test
For this both cars would use their factory settings, the main reason for this test is as a benchmark for the cars lap time and also the cars handling.
Corvette Z06 RM ‘06
Time: 1:00.149
Notes: I was not expecting much from the standard setup but there really is a massive amount of room for improvement, the first is an easy fix for the car topping out at just over 200mph but the steering leaves you disappointed, in the high speed turns the car starts to drift out wide meaning that you have to lift off the power but in slow corners the car still under steers but when power is applied to correct this the car is quick to slide. Despite this the car has decent throttle response and it is not too hard to put a lap in.

Corvette ZR1 RM ‘09
Time: 0:59.123
Notes: I was expecting a bit more speed and similar handling and that pretty much what I got, the extra power of the ZR1 is noticeable and welcome but the car still will not hold it’s line well in high speed turns, still under steers at low speeds leading to the need for power to correct the car and yet again it is too easy to get the rear end sliding losing time.

Notes: This was quite a basic setup on the whole only making changes the suspension and LSD, the suspension changes do not get rid of the cars problems but do help to ease them with slightly better turn in. The main advantage though is the LSD setup which seems to up the throttle response making getting out of the corners quickly easier; this is also helped by the suspension keeping the back in check just that bit longer to allow the car to get out of the corner.

Notes: That’s more like it. This more detailed setup from RKM goes a long way to improving all areas of the Z06. The changes to the aero balance give the car vastly more grip than either Prone’s setup or the factory settings provide. This setup also makes the car faster but more manageable due to a better selection of gear ratios and the LSD manages the power well in the corners. Aside from this the highpoint of the setup has to be the suspension which provides the Z06 with superb turn-in for a car of its size. All this allows you to push harder through every type of corner due to the road holding, this becomes very noticeable when exiting low speed corners as the cars power seems easier to manage.
Summary
When I first drove the Z06 I was disappointed by its numb feeling suspension and poor turn in, both setups made the car better. Prone’s setups tightened up the car but RKM’s setups completely transforms the way the car feels and gives the driver more confidence in the corners, so it is RKM’s tune that I would recommend.
Further note: sorry for the low number of tunes but these are the available ones at this time.

Notes: This at the time of testing was one of the best setups I have tried; much like RKM’s Z06 it gives the driver confidence in the corners and lots of manageable power. However it goes beyond what RKM did with the Z06, this car, unlike the standard setup, can take the first corner flat out at over 200mph. The gearing suspension and differential work on harmony to let your pick your line and then be able to use all the cars power through the turns, this is truly brilliant.

Tuner Name: Sail IC (GTP, Independent)

Time: 0:57.207
Notes: I now stand corrected on the previous setup, as can be seen this setup is faster. Both setups use the same gearing but though it lacks the high speed grip and stability of Vett’e’s tune, it more than makes up for it with its superior turn-in and cornering abilities. This car is really agile and with this setup could probably run with LMP’s.

Tuner Name: NastyFireman (GTP, Independent)

Time: 0:58.326
Notes: This setup says it’s for ovals and I can see why. In high speed bend it outruns the ghost lap of Sail IC’s setup and would be a great car for grinding at Indionapolis. However this should not be used for other tracks, even at high speed ring it is too loose in the low speed corners to be competitive and with no traction control is very hard work to drive.
Summary
Again a lack of available setups keeps this section short but those users who have tried have all had success in some way over the standard ZR1 RM. The setups used here are all fit for their intended purpose but on balance the setup I would use would be Sail IC’s, it may lack some of the high speed grip but it is the best feeling car on balance for the ZR1 and would out do the Z06 at every turn.
Hope this helps those looking for the best setup:)

Great stuff Car Man! I recommend some more details next time and a wider variety of tracks if you were to do amendments. I think these minute differences are attributed to which track the car was set for. I generally use Suzuka because its not particularly long, has a good variety of on/off camber turns and undulating bends.

I'm pleased to hear you praise our car, but the crown still belongs with Sail. Again he's beaten us, here and also on Adrenaline's review earlier this month!

Once again, on behalf of Avid, we would like to extend our gratitude to you for your efforts!

Have a happy new year and best wishes
