I did a search just to see if there wasn't a thread on this already.

Does anyone on here recognize all or most of the country initials? There are some that really leave me scratching my head.

One is [ES], part of me wants to say Spain, but shouldn't Spain be [SP]? Perhaps it is for Estonia?

I know:
[JP]=Japan
[FR]=France
[US]=United States
[CA]=Canada
[GB]=Great Britain (I'm assuming)
[NL]=Netherlands(?)
[DE]=Denmark(?)

I've seen [HK] as well and the only thing that I could think of for that is Hong Kong, although I'm probably wrong heh.

Thanks to MasterGT and Cobra Girl

What you need to bear in mind is that many of the country abbreviations are based on the name of the country, in the country's native language, not necessarily in English. ;)

Hence Spain is [ES] from Espana and Germany is [DE] from Deutschland.

Thanks to the poster who posted the full list originally. 👍

To those of you who repeatedly quoted the whole thing over & over again, double posted and slowchatted about it afterwards, I deleted those 5 posts.
DON'T do that sort of thing again please. You know who you are. :grumpy:

Great! You do realise that now I'm going to have to print this off and tick the ones I play.

Thanks GTP you've turned me into a trainspotter :grumpy:

I certainly get that. If you follow that logic though, wouldn't it make sense for Japan to be NP for Nippon?

BTW, thank you to the individual that posted the original list. That was really great. :)

That's very true. :boggled:

Also by the same logic, United Kingdom shouldn't be GB, since technically Northern Ireland isn't part of Great Britain, and therefore Northern Ireland would need it's own country tag too. However, since Nicaragua already has NI, it would create incredible confusion, and so the United Kingdom (which does include Northern Ireland) gets the GB tag. (Although I'm not sure why UK isn't used instead? To avoid confusing it with Ukraine maybe? :confused:)

Uhhh no, just because someone has the same avatar as me doesn't mean I'm the same person posting... and if an Italian decided to make his/her name a tongue and cheek joke like that, I would laugh at it since it's his or her decision to do edit their name in such a fashion. It's a joke. I never said I'd do it.... and besides no one is saying Italy is full of fecal matter or that a play on a userID has any corrolation to what they think of Italy.

I'm sorry if that offended you but I'm not even the original poster of that 'idea' or whatever you want to call it.

Moving steadily along... does anyone find it funny that they apply the 'native tongue' rule for the abbreviation kind of willy nilly?

I thought I would do it but coudn't use the countries I'd wanted..

DRIVEN_BY_[AI] (Anguilla)
THIS_IS_[BS] (Bahamas)
I_LIKE_[MR] (Mauritania)

Just for the laughs I thought doing also this... but I can assure you that this is not true:

I_AM_[BI] (Burundi)

:dunce:

Damn, reputation (whatever it was) lost forever.

edit: I know I'm sometimes very childish.. :ouch:

DustDriver: Great!

And to the quoters; I'd love to see an edit, it sucks scrolling trough the full list 3 times. :P

opelgt1969 ,thanks,I've seen some of these and wondered,where they were from. Printing off a copy now. Again, thanks

Northern ireland is counted as a part of the united kingdom thanks very much we aint to free staters over here.

He was referring to Northern Ireland not being part of Great Britain, which is true.
There is a difference between "Great Britain" and the "United Kingdom" you know.

That's very true. :boggled:

Nope, I dont think its weird at all... You cant expect the whole world to speak English and use english... they're entitled to use their own language.... So I dont find it funny at all...

I imagine that these are worldwide abbreviations which everyone uses in some way.... Or am I wrong in that respect?

They're actually ISO codes. So yes they are used worldwide.
ISO = International Organization for Standardization.
