Crashday can trace its roots back to 1998, where it began life as a hobby project of two 14-year olds - a game part Carmageddon, part Stunts. After eight years of teaching themselves programming and creating game art, the game was released in February 2006, with the help of development partner Replay Studios and distributed by Atari.

The game was very well received with players. Yes, there was a very cheesy story and the vehicle physics were a bit derpy, so it wasn't particularly well received among reviewers. Even so, the game seemed to have found its niché in the gaming community - the Carmageddon franchise had vanished off the face of the planet and FlatOut, though similar in many aspects, perhaps wasn't crazy enough, what with not being able to fire a missile into the taillights of the car ahead and all that.

Then, in June 2016, a game simply titled Crashday found its way into Steams Greenlight process, was greenlit the following month and would evolve into what's now called Crashday: Redline Edition, which released less than 24 hours ago. As you've probably expected, it's a remaster of the 2006 game - more than 100 bugs eradicated, some slight touches here and there, a better online experience - and who can forget glorious full Steam Workshop integration? The graphics may not be anything to shout about, and it certainly is neither 4K nor HDR - but that just means it can run on pretty much any system.

The base car list is unchanged from the original, with a total of 12 vehicles on offer - a police cruiser, a few hatchbacks, something that totally isn't the original KITT, a pick-up truck, a selection of muscle and supercars and what's essentially a Hummer H1 - each with their own selection of modifications. Of course, the Steam Workshop will make sure you never run out of metal to bend.

Among game modes can be mentioned the racing game classic that is racing (surprising, I know), Stunt Shows, something you'd more typically find in Call of Duty like (Team) Deathmatch and Hold The Flag (which, for no apparent reason, is a giant yellow smiley), Bomb Run (which totally isn't a Speed reference) and Pass The Bomb (pass on the bomb before it blows up - you get more points if you were the last to pass it on).

And best of all: as part of the launch, it's currently 20% off, putting it at a lower price than similar games like FlatOut 2, Burnout Paradise and Split/Second.

The long and short of it is this: it you enjoy games all about crashing cars, but find that the likes of Wreckfest or BeamNG.drive are not silly enough and weren't satisfied with the modern Carmageddon games, this might be worth looking into. 98% positive reviews on Steam should be an indication of something.

Of course, a post like this isn't complete without a few screenshots to demonstrate it:

..yes, not unlike Just Cause and true to Lord Michael Bay, the game is at its best when something is getting blown to smithereens.
