Criminal Emu?

UK police have detained an emu after it escaped from a property and was founding wandering the streets and trying to break into people's homes.

Police said they thought they were being pranked after receiving calls about an emu running up and down a residential street and weaving through traffic in North Devon yesterday.

"When I arrived at the scene to check it out I could see this bird in the street – it was trying to get into people's houses," acting sergeant Zoe Parnell said.

PC Parnell said the emu, a five-month-old female named Betty, was going from house to house - trying to find its way into each one.

Police managed to catch the panicking bird and wrangle it into the back of a police car.

"It's a bit of a state in the back of the car now - there's mud, feathers and a few other thing," police constable Stephen Huxtable said.

The bird was handed to a local wildlife carer Diana Lewis who is looking after it until its owners come to pick it up.

It escaped after somebody broke the gate to its paddock.
