The time has come. For the two years I've been a member on GTP, I've always dreamed of the day I would finally get to make a thread just like this one. The time has come my friends, for now I present to you. Crispy's Car Thread.

For those looking for a gallery of photos, I'm afraid you will be disappointed. See, the car currently, is covered in sleet and the doors won't open because they're frozen shut. I promise though that when the time comes that the temperature raises above 32 degrees fahrenheit, a gallery shall appear where text now resides. (Translation: Enjoy these pictures taken a while back)

An NB Miata, that's exactly what I wanted, if not for this stupid Canadian thing called "winter".

It looks so nice in yellow too.👍

Thanks guys! 👍 So I have a few things planned for this car...

First things first I'm going to swap the standard brake lines with Flyin' Miata stainless steel lines. The rear passenger brake line is leaking so I'd like to just change out the parts with more durable stainless steel parts. After that is just cleaning up the exterior, probably restore it a bit cause the front is beat to hell. Other than that it's basic maintenance to learn how to work on cars and just enjoying driving! 👍

The first week has gone by driving this car to school.

It's been a few months sense this car has been driven daily. However it has braved freezing temperatures, and mild ones. Driven through rain, and frost. Gone through sunlight, and moonlight. A little sad times for me right now, but it's comforting being behind the wheel of a great car.

That's a beautiful miata you have there. Just a suggestion, maybe remove the tail light covers? I always thought those things were tacky. Not trying to be rude or anything. Other than that it really is a awesome miata.

Thanks! So far I'm thinking of keeping the exterior exactly as it is, but I might consider it!

Also, it's funny because one of the cars not shown in the photo is a ZHP 330i my parents own!

That is awesome! Two great enthusiast cars. Provide some pics if you can!

It's rare to see an E46 in red, let alone a 330i ZHP (arguably the best non-M3 version as well). Looks sharp!

Yes. ZHP's are great cars. Just enough amount of changes to make them that much better than a regular 330. I absolutely love mine, even if it is the vert.

Now it has been quite a while since I've updated this thread, yet some seriously big doings over the past few months!

First things first! My first big event with the car was one that most Miata owners do eventually. Autocross! First event of the season, March 16th. I ran in C-Street Novice (Though I should have ran in E-Street Novice) and earned 13th out of 35 with a time of 41.253. Not bad for a first time, but I want to be higher! Here's a picture of my car from the day before.
IMG_1925.JPG

Of course during inspection of the car they noticed a wheel bearing that is loose yet within the SCCA allowed limits. The benefits of being in this part of Texas is that I'm a twenty minute drive from the guys at TrackDog Racing! So we go to get things checked up and they have a certain car sitting in the garage. A costumer car that was totaled in a wreck with a nice Hard Dog Sport Roll Bar in the back. A few hundred dollars later and my car is freshened up with HP+ Brake Pads, new shift boots, and a Hard Dog Sport!

IMG_1941.jpg

So what am I looking for next? Definitely a job. After that however... Well lets just say I've been eyeballing a set of Xida Coilovers!

Wow, April was the last time I posted on here? I think we are in a severe need for an update!

Things were going as the had the last time I updated. I wasn't going on any autocrosses because the last time my car got tech'd it almost failed due to a wheel bearing. Got the parts, didn't install it yet.

I'm driving along and I shift to 5th. 🤬. It felt really, really loose, so I limp it home.

rocBWUA.jpg

I open up the center console, dirty but no cracked boots...

dyZe6Ur.jpg

I'm no expect but that doesn't look right...

8CkYIEf.jpg

At least I found the other half...

lLUNQxI.jpg

This is how she sat for about a week. However a shifter rebuild kit ordered and installed and she was back on the road! This was my first time working on a car so I was pretty proud, even if it was something very minor and small. Shifted like a dream!

Om5VVnX.jpg

A quick pic while I was waiting for my friend to get ready for band. Man do those HP+ pads dust! It's a fair tradeoff for braking power though.

wd1BM5k.jpg

Maybe five days on the road? A day after the last picture was taken and this is what it looked like in our driveway. Why? Short answer? I was dumb. Long answer? It slid, bumped a curb at the front causing the rear to rotate around and with the power of physics proceed backwards up and over another curb. At least nobody was around. The damage was a bent long bolt and scuffed skirt, plus I suspect some motor mounts and diff mounts. The shop quoted us at $1100. Our friend quoted us at a philly cheesesteak. We found the parts for $130 and an hour total for assembly. Not bad at all.

d60izNb.jpg

The long bolt was so bent we couldn't get it out. For safety we replaced the knuckle, lower and upper control arms.

So she lives! I'm going to replace the motor mounts and diff bushings with Mazda Competition parts. Acceleration feels dampened initially before picking up like normal after a half second or so. (Plus I'm missing shifts :grumpy: ) No noises however so I don't think it's gears and the engine revs perfectly fine. The only thing I and someone else on miata.net can think of is the mounts. Right now I'm just going to drive it, and get a job. I feel guilty about my parents paying for stuff. Until I get the money to replace these things it'll drive at 90% health.

In other news the friend that helped us piece it back together is a good friend of ours for a very long time, Georg Taht. Perhaps some of you guys in Dallas might know him as part-time owner and track instructor for Apex Driving Academy at Motorsports Ranch Cresson. We paid for a spot for November 1st, which will be my first track experience outside of karts!

Hopefully I'll be updating more frequently than I have. Until next time!

Ugh... So today has really brought my spirits down.

This week my clutch has become a wet noodle for the first few inches of travel. Adjustment is fine, no visible leaks and all the fluid is still there. My guess is just a large air bubble, so I'm bleeding the clutch later today. Unfortunately on my way home last night I started to get a really, really strong electrical burning smell. So strong in fact that when my mom came outside to help me with all my stuff she could smell it, from ten feet away. :banghead:

Somehow I'll have to figure out what it is. I can't see any wires that look to be burnt. Furthermore on a drive to see if we could replicate it, the smell lingered for half a second before going away. Whatever, clutch first, then figuring out what the hell is going on with the electronics. (Squirrels, they've already taken out my relays.) Right now I'm really thinking about canceling my track day though. :(

First, I really like the color of your car 👍

If you don't see any leaks it could be the clutch master cylinder leaking inside. You can get a replacement at most local auto parts. I would call around and make sure they have one in stock before the 1st.

That's what it was. 👍 Got the part yesterday, bolts were on there pretty good and we didn't have tools that could easily break them free so down to the local shop it goes today...

So in a sudden burst of confidence and courage I decided that I will try one last time. Using the money I was going to use for the shop, I went out to Lowes.
oU5OMb3.jpg

This is what I came back with, plus some PB Blaster not pictured. I unbolted the bracket for the cruise control to get some extra space, and used those deep sockets and large ratchet to go to town on that damn master cylinder. No more trying to break the nuts loose for an hour using all the force in my body. Ten seconds and they were finished!

About an hour later I had bench bled the new cylinder and installed it. The clutch hardline was a pain and took way longer than the rest of the install, but it finally went in after some curses and force. The clutch needs to be bled still so I don't 100% know if it worked until tomorrow, so here's to hoping!

Tools are always a great investment 👍 and PB blaster is a must have when you own a miata.

Yesterday was a track day out at Motorsports Ranch in Cresson. I was doing Apex Driving Academy so I was put in the novice group. The cars in that group were pretty high end. You had a Gen 1 Viper (Rented to some guy, Apex owns it), you had a Spec Miata, a E36 325is with Hankook RS3's, a C6 Corvette, an ISF, an E92 M3, a V6 Jaguar F-Type, and a Mk.7 GTI. Looks like I was going to get to use point by's pretty often!

Just before class starts. We were running the 1.7 track Clockwise, I'll get to that in a minute...

Here's the car just after the third session. Still looks clean!

So this guy shows up, first time, and probably last time I'll ever see a CGT. Wow.

Obligatory lame photo! I'm only 5'7" but I look much taller next to the car.

Back at home.

So my impressions of the first day can be summed up in one word. AWESOME! We had a total of five sessions with classroom sessions in between. Our first track session was a braking test and slalom test, plus a time to get to know our instructors. I had a guy named Richard. If you go to MSR and watch the Apex Instructors run he is the guy in the Matte Black S2000.

Our second session was two laps we hand the keys to the instructors, see how they go through the track, and then take the rest of the thirty minutes to try our hand at the track. Course yellow. After a lap or two my instructor saw I could get the line down, so he had me point out where the ISF was going wrong. That was fun.

Third session was passing, course green. Time to get passed! This was mostly getting to know the line. A funny thing happened, I didn't get passed. In fact my first track day kill was a C6 Corvette. I was up on the ISF but he wouldn't let me pass and instead used his advantage on the straight to pull away before I was right on him after the first corner. He ended up spinning though so I passed him there. Next car was the GTI, but they called a cool down lap before I could.

The advanced group went on and our classroom time was done, so our classroom instructor and good friend of ours Georg decided to take me out in his stripped and slicked 250hp turbo Miata with spec Miata suspension. That car was 🤬 fast. My mom also took a ride later, but it stripped third so they had to pit. Here it is!

IMG_2395.JPG

Fourth session my instructor decided he would focus on more advanced techniques. Since he drives momentum cars he knew how to tailor the skills for my car. We focused on carrying as much speed into the corner and keeping that momentum up with the throttle. I was pulling crazy speeds through some of those corners. This time the ISF let me pass, I guess he learned. I was keeping a good distance from the instructor driving the F-Type behind me, but we eventually let him pass because he was gaining on me each lap.

This next advanced session my instructor let me ride with him in his S2000. He was going to show me what it is like to dance the car on the edge of grip. I've never felt like I was going so fast. That car just went. Unfortunately a Corvette put the pressure when we were going to pit so we clipped a curb and had to get the car checked out.

The fifth session he wanted me to dance the car on the edge of grip like he did. So I did as I was told. That was by far the fastest run. I had the entire group behind me except for the 325is and I never got passed. I eventually passed the 325is after keeping my distance, his line was all over the place.

That was one of the most fun experiences ever. Unfortunately I've caught the bug. Next event that is open is January 3rd. I know what I'm doing! Big thanks to Richard and Apex Driving Academy as a whole. Huge thanks to Georg for getting me a spot too! Hopefully one day I can keep up to the instructors!

I'll update this thread when the next part breaks!

Great write up 👍 sounded like fun!

Wow the last post here was over two years ago! A lot has changed, and a lot more is going to change in the near future! Let us get up to speed?

EDIT: Some pictures won't show up so just imagine them!

Now please, bear with me here as most these photos come from instagram. I imagine quality and what not is going to be kind of low, but this will be the only time I promise! (Also obligatory instagram plug: crispychicken49 ) It's wear my build has mostly been documented for some time!

The last update was made my Junior year of high school. The rest of the year went by pretty uneventfully. I was a leech so the most done to my car was filling it up with gas. Just before summer break my car's radiator took a giant dump and spilled coolant everywhere. Out with the old plastic fish bowl and in with a tank that would make Seaworld proud in the form of a Koyorad 36mm radiator. Unknown to me was a bad fan fuse that later caused the car to overheat while it idled in my driveway. With no evidence of a blown headgasket I soldiered on.

That summer it was time to de-leech myself and get a job. Why not start at as a grocery store bagger? Not too complex and I can start to afford car parts, win-win right? Well...

In retrospect the job wasn't really that bad. It was your average minimum wage job. Plus it got me this.

That right there is an Enthuza XR Lightweight exhaust for the NB Miata. Finished in Aluminized steel because I'm cheap. It replaces the muffler with a resonator and is 2.25" ID mandrel bent. Yes it was super freaking loud when it was first installed. It gave an Abarth 500 a run for it's money. Over a year later? Still loud, especially from behind, but it has mellowed out quite a bit. It has a nice deep racecar like tone without making your ears bleed. I get tons of compliments from Miata guys and the friends that sit shotgun, so I'd definitely recommend it! Here's a link to it for you NB guys. He also makes Turbo versions and NA versions. He has seemed to go dark the past month so I'd definitely give a call or email before ordering.

Now finding the cash to get gas, hang with friends, and buy car parts all on a minimum wage budget was not easy. Over the course of 3-4 months I saved up just enough to give my radio a little upgrade. See the SE NB's came with a 6-CD changer Bose Headunit. Well the CD player has broken and I got tired of having a half functional head unit that took up a bunch of space (double DIN). On to the internet!

My biggest criteria was that it was Single DIN (you will see why) and could play off my phone while looking relatively OEM. That is a much taller order than I thought it would be. Of course I eventually found one. From my picture down below it looks like a Kenwood KDC-BT582U. To change a Bose headunit in the Miata requires the use of a Scosche line level adapter. Thankfully all the stuff is included if you head on over to Crutchfield! In fact, choose your car and Skynet will find all the things you'll need in order to make it work!

So why did I want a Single DIN radio? For this.

I wanted a working water temp and oil temp/pressure gauge for my car, especially after my overheating saga that I slimmed down into a few good sentences. Unfortunately at this time the OPG gauge only read pressure when the oil temperature was above 190 F. It has stopped reading completely as of now. At least I have the dummy gauge to tell me I actually have some pressure!

I believe that install was done at the start of the second semester of Senior year. I'm not too disappointed about the OPG gauge, it was a clearance as-is gauge and it looks cool! How can I deny my inner rice? Plus I had something big to save for... :mischievous:

Reading this thread earlier makes me smile a whole bunch. When I first started the thread I thought that by the end of my high school career I'd have a turbocharged beast of a Miata sitting on Xidas and wide track tires. For those who don't want to math this late in the year, that was about $11,000 worth or parts. I figured if I worked 30 hours a week at a little above minimum wage I'd be able to do it. That plan was going perfectly until I actually started working. Maybe just start off small right?

Second semester senior year meant three things to me. Prom, college, and car parts (not in that order obviously). I got accepted to University of Texas at Dallas, and I planned on majoring in Mechanical engineering. Fun stuff! It was about a week before prom when I got all the parts for my car that I had been ordering for a while. All said and done it was probably about five parts per corner. Plus some detailing equipment!

While my girl-friends were getting themselves ready for prom, I was getting my car ready. The day before I got home around 1:00 from my dual credit class. Crunch time. This was where all the AmmoNYC and Chemical Guys videos would truly pay off. Two buckets, ten towels, one clay bar, and a determined peacock trying to show his feathers. All and all it took about 6 hours, but the surface was buttery smooth and oh so shiny. Who really needs a repaint after all?

I also decided to pull off those front headlight masks. Much better! Also at some point in here my parents bought an ND Club. Fun car. Really fun car. I still like mine better though! :sly:

Prom was a blast. It's so much fun going with friends instead of worrying about dates and what not. Besides there is only room in my heart for my Miata. It's like dating a horse girl.

That being said it doesn't end there. Remember that big project I was talking about? I think it is time I give y'all a hint.

Or maybe just show everything!

13113967_557390114434324_132433780_n.jpg

Yes those bumpstops were trimmed down. For my coilover setup I decided to go the Better Bilstein Coilover route as seen on Miataturbo.net. Those familiar with Ground Control coilovers will recognize this. Basically you take a Bilstein HD or MSM Bilstein shock, put some coilover sleeves on it, and get some springs. My particular setup is an NB HD, 450 lbs/in front, 300 rear, 36mm bumpstop and extended rear top hats (1.5"). The car is amazingly comfortable on the street and handles great!

13118282_552541708281296_684369118_n.jpg

I also took advantage of the time to rip off the tupperware kit. The car looks like an NB now, well then!

13116722_1578777319119630_980304938_n.jpg

Here it is all shined up and ready for a meet called ECM. Huge meet, tons of cars. For those near the DFW area definitely come! Right now it is in the mornings but after the holidays it'll be back to evening hours. Huge Miata turnout too!

13408831_1156495381079421_1517864202_n.jpg

The school year was coming to a close now. I had a bit of leftover money from working and the graduation money was coming in. There was just one last thing the exterior of my car, and any great Miata, was missing.

S8T4ANV.jpg

Those are Advanti Storm S1's. They're basically the basic 🤬 wheels for Miata's. I've been eying these for a long time, ever since I started this thread. I wasn't going to settle for anything less than a 15x9 anyway. I wrapped these babies in a Hankook RS3, 225/45/15. I had to wait almost two months for these but it was completely well worth the wait. Here's what they look like on the car.

Dozqe23.jpg

Now we bring ourselves to a transitionary period. I quit my job working at a grocery store and wanted a bit of time off from working. Nothing crazy, just a few weeks to get used to college and what-not. The mods stopped for quite a time, in fact they really still haven't caught back on. Of course I definitely have plans on what to do next, there is nothing wrong with taking a break. After all the car is for me, not anyone else. That being said there was one thing that really bothered me...

See all that black stuff? That is tape. That holds the body kit on along with 5 screws per side. No manner of goo-gone and plastic razors could take that stuff on. Texas heat does terrible things to adhesives. With my new job working as a mechanics assistant, I started saving back up for stuff again. This time, body work.

15538868_1539871159373685_5696426523528003584_n.jpg

Here she is as of Thursday. No more hole in the front bumper. No more tape. All the holes have been plugged and paint chips have been filled. This is how it looked when it came from factory, just less faded. Shout out to "The Body Shop" in McKinney for doing a great job!

I think that just about catches us up. Things to come are a full exhaust, Megasquirt ECU, flex fuel sensor, and stiffer springs. It never stops really. That being said looking at my plans every time I update this thread nothing really pans out exactly how I imagined it, and that is perfectly fine with me! The build of a car isn't about what ends up, not at all. It's about how we got here. The weird quirks, friends we make, and fun we have, of which there is plenty. Thank you all so much for reading this great wall of text, and I promise to update much, much more in the future!

Happy Holidays!
