A co-worked called my yesterday from California Speedway (he said it was off the 10 and the 15 freeways).
He knows how much I like the D1GP, so he got to telling me that "some Japanese" driver hopped into a Dodge Viper and started drifting around the Speedway. I asked what he was doing there and he said that he was there with his roommate who needed to get some equipment for his job.
It struck me as kinda odd that some random Japanese guy would be out there and have decent drift skills. So I asked if his friend/drinking buddy - Yuke Taniguchi - was over there as well. Well it turned out that Yuke was there for some setups and testing of some race cars. Since he's the prime sponsor for 2002 D1 champ, Ueo Katsuhiro's AE86, I asked him if Ueo was there racing and he told me that he didn't see him there.
So he's telling me that Dodge is putting some bucks into this year's D1GP. So one or two teams will be drifting Vipers at next week's D1.
Take it as you will. Until the event is done with, I'd take the Viper speculation with a grain of salt. But if it does turn out true - you heard it here first.
