Air ducts open up while braking causing drag which helps slow the car. But their main function is to force air into holding tanks where it is held under pressure. When you press the button it releases it to boost the airflow into the engine. The tanks quickly empty but then get replenished when you next brake.Presumably it's simulating the 100% boost pressure configuration on this car, but it's also a limited resource and it recharges when braking...
Of course I might have just completely made that up. Now I've written it though it actually sounds like a semi plausible idea for the buttons use.
