Welcome to:

December Car of the Month!

Featuring:

Mitsubishi FTO GPX '99 &
FTO GP Version R '99

This month we shall once again delve into the world of understeer, following a month of oversteer, it only seemed fitting. Not often do we go after front wheel drive cars, and they have difficulty all their own. So, as suggested by @DaBomm4, we shall take on the challenge of tuning the FTO. There are 7 models to choose from thanks to PD (8 if you include the race car:dopey:), but we shall only be choosing 2. The '99 GPX, and GP Version R FTO models. Back in the Original Gran Turismo, the 94 FTO GPX was the 2nd car I purchased :D, using it for Lightweights and FF ;). I later Race Modified it (miss that feature :ill:), and ran many miles in it. Since, I have had an FTO in every GT version, and finally got around to tuning a few for this month :embarrassed:. I invite you to share your version of these powerful lightweight front wheel drive hidden gems :cool:. Normally not the go to FF car in game, let's see if we can change that. 👍

So tune them and share them here, or feel free to jump into one of the others and give feedback and a review. Nothing stopping you from doing both! ;)

Please be sure to give tire choice, and if possible, a track selection for testing :sly:.
Now let's get to it, and tune that understeer out of these babies shall we? :mischievous:

A front wheel drive car is an great choice to mix things up a bit! All I've been doing for the past few months was tuning MR/FR cars. First impression of the FTO is that it's really slow; despite its low weight it does not turn very well and it barely has power at 450. Good stability, but the car doesnt feel like it compares to my Integra in terms of performance. Tuning it for higher PP probably won't fix that, and I don't really feel like doing a 430 tune. It feels better on flat courses than it does on Trial though, maybe it's just not a good car for that track. Need to think about where to take this one, I really wanna make it run well because it just looks cute. Have fun everyone, hope the unusual drive will lead to some interesting tunes.

Has to be some difficulty to it or would be easy to choose the car each month. Try Deep Forest or Autumn Ring, they should be interesting.

I did try out Autumn Ring, it feels a lot better there and you can do a lot more to the setup without wrecking laptimes. Much better corner exit and more intuitive drive, easy to make adjustments to the suspension.

I guess the problem with Trial Mountain is that it kind of feels like one huge corner, there are no flat straights on corner exits, always banked or uphill/downhill. Requires a pretty specific setup and racing line, but if you can run the car well here, it will run anywhere (except NBR, needs a more stable ride). Guess I'll tweak this setup on Autumn and later move back to Trial to see if it helped any.

So, just curious what times you guys are getting on your test tracks, once I get my tune built and posted I will try to get to the tunes this month, along side learning PCars.

Here's my setup for this sweet FF ride. I used @shaunm80 template to post this tune, I hope you don't mind

Note: I'm pretty happy with the end result, although there is some weight transfer issues around flowing turns like Spa, Bathurst and MidField if steering isn't very smooth. I didn't want to go harder on the suspension than I already have because the speed sensation is just TOPS!! It probably isn't the fastest 500pp version out there, but it is a real blast for me to drive. Sport hard tires do not work with this tune unless you have TC1 because you will just keep bouncing off of the rev limiter costing a lot of time

Here is a review from @hall90 for the 450PP car I have tuned.

The Mitsubishi FTO GP Version R '99 (450PP) its a lot better than the 500PP version, and it is a nice car to drive. I done this on the same track at Mid-field Raceway with ABS 1 and everything off and Grip Reduction set to Real no other issues when using wheel :cheers:.

I had no trouble with understeer using my wheel, the only trouble with understeer is when you I don't brake when I am approaching the corners :lol:.

A slight tap on the brake usually does the trick to get the apex nailed perfectly. :)

Left foot braking does the trick and a little bit of trail brake also.

This is your Mitsubishi FTO GP Version R '99 (450PP) at the Mid-field Raceway.

I'd post mine and do reviews but I haven't been able to get on my PS3 since my last post. I'll see if I can get some testing done this week though.

My tune is 450pp/SH and I couldn't get it to go significantly faster yet in the 2 hours I worked on it last week, really not sure what it needs. I can feel my tuning's effect on the car's behaviour but my times are almost always about the same (or worse).

We know what you mean, I will have my results up probably Friday tonight and two of the tunes are similar but times are not as close as you'd think. I would be glad to add your tune to the mix. ;)

You seem to be missing the Ballast Position number, would you care to add it or keep it a mystery for us to figure out? Also, you didn't state if you have window reduction installed but with current weight setup I get 1030kg instead. And lastly, I cannot match your gears with the default final gear of 4.312, but I can match the gears when using 4.090 for the Initial Final Gear.

Before I start I wanted to say I enjoyed each tune for what it had, and I am glad that I spent some time testing them. ;)

All tunes tested with ABS 1, no other aids, DS3

@shaunm80's GP Version R '99 400pp
1:35.3 - Autumn Ring
1:48.8 - Trial Mountain
1:35.4 - Deep Forest
Conclusion, easy to drive, 2nd to 3rd gear feels a little long.

GP Version R '99 - 450pp on the tune specified tires

@DaBomm4
1:33.5 - Autumn Ring
1:47.5 - Trial Mountain
1:35.5 - Deep Forest
3:33.1 - Rollercoaster of Death 2.0 by @NixxxoN

@Bowtie-muscle
1:29.8 - Autumn Ring - 1:33.5 CS for comparison
1:43.0 - Trial Mountain
1:29.2 - Deep Forest
Conclusion, sometimes hard to stay in the power zone and a little wobbly at high speeds.

@shaunm80
1:28.9 - Autumn Ring
1:41.1 - Trial Mountain
1:29.0 - Deep Forest
Conclusion, this tune feels almost exactly the same as the 400pp version. 👍 (P.S. where are the FITT tunes like this one?)

@Soren Jacquet
1:25.1 - Autumn Ring
1:38.1 - Trial Mountain
1:25.1 - Deep Forest
SH tires for comparison
1:29.9 - Autumn Ring
1:42.9 - Trial Mountain
1:28.8 - Deep Forest
Conclusion, very comparable performer when on equal tires, but power understeer seemed to be more of a problem on some corners. Power and gearing worked well together.

@Burned_Rubber
1:29.5 - Autumn Ring
1:42.2 - Trial Mountain
1:29.0 - Deep Forest
Conclusion, 1st to 2nd gear sometimes was hard to get right into the power zone, otherwise the gears were good and either I was pushing too hard or it liked to push a little wider than Bowtie's. Specific note, second gear really struggled on Deep Forest.

GP Version R '99 - 500pp on Sport Soft tires

@TheInfamousJEW6
1:23.2 - Autumn Ring
1:29.1 - Apricot Hill
1:35.2 - Trial Mountain
1:22.9 - Deep Forest
Conclusion, on throttle lift off there is a lot of rotation willing to happen, once I figured it out I could benefit from it though. The gap between 2nd and 3rd feels a little long, and the inside wheel I feel is a little too easy to spin up.

@shaunm80 on SS tires
1:24.3 - Autumn Ring
1:29.7 - Apricot Hill
1:36.6 - Trial Mountain
1:22.9 - Deep Forest
Conclusion, this tune feels very solid and predictable, but with this much power through only the front wheels and very little off throttle rotation, turns have to be entered more slowly.

@Burned_Rubber
1:23.0 - Autumn Ring
1:28.5 - Apricot Hill
1:36.0 - Trial Mountain
1:22.6 - Deep Forest
Conclusion, well balanced, easy rotation under braking, a little difficult for my fingers to find the optimal throttle position at times.

Thanks for the reviews. You spent a fair bit of time on this so thanks for that. You are right about my two low power tunes and I really do try to make all my FITT tunes like this. The level of talent in FITT is amazing these days so getting a podium place is almost as good as a win. Almost...

As for the 500PP tune, it was experimental and you worked out how to get the best out of it, slow in and fast out is the only way I could get this tune to work properly. I spent a while working on this, but rotation and exit speed did not seem to be possible or easily found when compared to the 450PP tunes.

Great work as always and I hopefully I can make a FITT tune or two in the same manner of this. :)

1:28.8 - Deep Forest
Conclusion, very comparable performer when on equal tires, but power understeer seemed to be more of a problem on some corners. Power and gearing worked well together.

@Burned_Rubber

@TheInfamousJEW6

1:24.3 - Autumn Ring
1:29.7 - Apricot Hill
1:36.6 - Trial Mountain
1:22.9 - Deep Forest
Conclusion, this tune feels very solid and predictable, but with this much power through only the front wheels and very little off throttle rotation, turns have to be entered more slowly.

@Burned_Rubber
1:23.0 - Autumn Ring
1:28.5 - Apricot Hill
1:36.0 - Trial Mountain
1:22.6 - Deep Forest
Conclusion, well balanced, easy rotation under braking, a little difficult for my fingers to find the optimal throttle position at times.

Really a nice job you have done here.👍👍 Thanks for your rewiew :cheers:
