Do I need more ram?

Crapping hell.

This is what happens when you don't bother building an up to date computer. The last PC I built used DDR ram running at 266mhz it was an AMD 1400.

Up to date computers = $$$

My dad got his built and it cost him $2,700AUD. It is an AMD 2xxxx, 512mb unknown-to-me ram.

I feel your pain.

I just finished building mine about 3 months ago. XP 1800+ with 512MB of DDR PC2100 in it.

What just the 2 types of DDR ram have different Bus speeds?

I thought Rambus was different technology and what about RAMBUS. I've been living in a 133mhz cave :irked:

Check out some of the previous posts in this thread MistaY. You will find out a whole heap of new crap about ram - I did anyway.

Yeah, sorry - missed the RAMBUS thing at the end.

Honestly though, if you don't know what the difference is, chances are you aren't going to notice a change by switching.

Oops I typed rambus instead of RDRAM.

So you can use Rambus, Rdram and DDR on most P4 boards and AMD supports?
AMD doesn't support RAMBUS, so if you choose RAMBUS then you are tied to a P4. Unless, of course, yoiu buy a different type of memory, then you can go over to AMD if you choose.

Yup, RAMBUS owns RDRAM memory. The memory packaging is called RIMM.

Thats it!

Iv'e heard of Rimm's, so basically we have Dimms, DDR memory and Rimm's as memory choices.

Although I think Eddy's P4 may only be using PC133 Dimms, because the IBM P4's we have at work use those.

I'll check if you tell me how to find out what I have...

Well I'm not sure how you could check.

I know that DDR memory has only 1 notch, unlike Dimm's have 2 notches. Also the memory probably has a sticker saying what specification it is. Shame IBM's bios is so crap because on most PC's you can find out what speed the memory is running at.

Pentium 4 2.4ghz
256mb DDR memory
533mhz front side bus
Gigabyte GA-8IE mothoerboard
GeForce 4 MX 64mb
DVD-Rom
CD-R/RW - 40x12x48
17" flat-screen monitor
USB 2.0
40gb 7,200rpm HDD
Windows XP Home
Sweet as case!

- $1,620

I could've had that computer except my damn parents were more interested in the 3 year on-site warranty that came with the IBM I currently have. :gnasher:x10

The computer I ended up with:
Pentium 4 1.6ghz
256mb unknown ram
Crappy IBM mobo
No front side bus
Network Card (no need for it though)
40gb unknown rpm HDD
Originally 16mb Nvidia Vanta (I bought the GF4Ti4200 myself)
No DVD or Burner
Ugly as desktop case
Windows 2000 Professional

- $1,650 (he forgot to add on the price for the modem as well, so the other computer was way better for less).

I'm still pissed off. I hope nothing goes wrong with this IBM in 3 years time that way I can give mum and dad the biggest ****...

Hahahahaha NVida vanta. Thats the card that I have in my work PC, I bet its crap but I havent used it for games barring a nes emulator.

The only 3D game I have on my computer at the moment is UT2003. Couldn't play 3D games beofre and the good ones are way expensive. :(

Yeah, I didn't know DDR memory was classed as a Dimm as well.

On that other thing NO COMMENT

What OS are you running and do you have DMA on in your IDE Controller settings.
