Yes I do have a source, professor Stephen Hawking. If they are any more qualified than him, id like to meet them.homeforsummerHave you got a source for that?
While the situation you describe is plausible, the picture which you've painted I suspect is vastly exaggerated. The nearest star to Earth is indeed around 4 light years away, but it's expected to last another four trillion years.
I suspect the one you're referring to is WR 104, but even this isn't expected to die for another few tens of thousands of years. And even then, we'd have to be directly hit by a Gamma-ray burst for it to cause any trouble to Earth, so it's not just a reasonably unlikely event, but extremely unlikely to happen any time this year.
Also if you had read on you would have seen that I didn't say that it would happen this year, quite the opposite in fact.
nealcropperThere are many reasons as to how the planet will come to an end, none of them concrete, but there are two things you can be sure of, it is going to happen, and it won't happen any time soon.
Also, the supernova I was referring to is something that was found entirely by accident, in the cold war by American military satellites in 1967, because of the spikes of gamma radiation, the same radiation used in atomic weapons. There still is no proof of what causes this type of radiation but there are well respected theory's that they are produced by a certain type of supernova called a Gamma Ray Burster. Also it isn't 4 light years from earth, it's 8,000, but is called WR 104. Deep inside the star itself is a bright sphere throwing out a shell of hot gas as it nears it's life's end, as it dies it could produce two tightly focused beams of gamma radiation, each one contains more energy than our sun will make in its entire life. Nobody knows if it will do this, or even if it will hit the earth, but it is entirely feasible.
Now, I have just typed that out from a documentary that is on National Geographic right now, narrated by Stephen Hawking himself. At no point have I said that this is going to happen or have I said that it will happen this year. In fact I think that the latter is about as absurd as the idea that someone could predict it over 400 years ago.
I also agree with you on the blackout of earth. If it lasted more than a week there would be chaos. Worldwide chaos.
In short I agree with you, and I don't.
