Dodge SRT-4: SportCompactCar of the year

It's just getting better and better.

Automobile magazine had a little section on accesories for the SRT-4 and that accesory is a Stage 1 turbo for $399. And that'll boost the horsepower to 240hp in your fast lil' SRT-4.:D

:)

OK Robert, you answered my question just about the way I hoped you would. I took the $1300 extended warranty when I bought my SRT-4 three weeks ago and the dealer warned me against making any "Stage" changes to it...it would void the warranty. However, dropping a K&N or maybe a foam filter like yours in the air intake won't, according to the K&N website...

God Bless The USA,

Jim

The Stage 1 kit consists of bigger injectors and a different ECU. Supposedly, in order to get one, you have to supply the VIN of your SRT-4. So much for trying to slip that one by the dealer!

There was a recent article on an upgrade for the SRT-4 that really got me to thinking. The kit went whole hog, and replaced the stock turbo with a bigger one, and all the related parts (manifold, downpipe, fuel rail, BOV, etc). The cost was something like $2400, but the SRT-4 wound up pushing over 300 hp, with torque way over 300 as well.

I have to think a few years down the road, and the fact that we want our kids to continue their education at a parochial high school. That ain't gonna be cheap, so now everything I have on my wish list I have to put in terms of that. Good thing for me that the car is plenty fast as it is now! I think I'll be happy with that for a good long while...

Hi Robert,

Yeah, I kinda figured that would be the way to go...my dealer advised me the stage 1 kit would void my warranty and since I paid $1300 for an extended warranty, I have to be careful about what I add on...the air filter route does seem the best.

I was over at "Dodge Forums" and they had several posts about what you REALLY need on your SRT...One of the items was a oil catch can (?) the other was an upgrade of the spark plug wires...according to the experts there, the OEM plug wires (especially #4) get cooked by the turbo within 3-5 thousand miles.

Anybody here heard anything similar or had any experience with these?

Jim

dusty: Check out the SRT board at www.neons.org . We're pretty knowledgeable over there. The infighting gets nasty some times, but it's pretty apparent who knows their stuff. Look for posts by Dale Seeley, among others.

;)

You were right, that WAS a great website...got several questions answered by reading the past postings. One guy even posted a blueprint/drawing of how to attach an oil catch can...great stuff!

I was already planning on getting some MSD plug wires, but after reading the postings on the site, I think I'll make that #1 on my "to do" list tomorrow...don't need no "melty wires" on a new SRT!!!:yuck:

Jim

:odd:

Yo,

I'm trying to get a general consensus from SRT owners on the correct spark plug gap...I've heard everything from .050 to .035...that's a pretty big difference!

BTW, ordered the Greddy oil can and the MSD plug wires as well as a set of Champion platinum plugs (hence the question on the gap!).

Later folks,

Jim

So far it's 3 in favor of .050 and 1 in favor of .045...no responses from the .040 or .035 crowd. Got my MSD spark plug wires today along with the platinum plugs...2 day shipping from modernperformance.com and shipping charges were seven bucks even. I'm impressed.👍 :)

Still waiting on the catch can from turboneons.com, but since it's been raining for the last 4 days here in San Antonio and it's forcasted to do the same for the next 3 days, no biggie...I'll go buy a spark plug gapping tool.

I'm sure he'll enjoy it, I don't recall reading any posts from any owners on the various forums who were unhappy with their SRT-4's...IT IS A SWEET CAR!!

:irked:

FYI, I heard thru a friend of a friend that builds the SRT-4s in IL that next year's model (2005) will be the last...also heard less certain rumors of a 10-15 HP upgrade...this "LIMITED PRODUCTION" car will be worth some big bucks in the future!:)

The SRT-4s, built on the current platform, will go thru 2005. Not sure what Dodge plans to do after that though. I'm glad I got a 2003 Silver. Only made something like 3300 total SRT-4s for 2003, of which less than 500 were silver. Yellow was the most, then equal numbers of red and black were made. Supposedly, 10000 SRT-4s for 2004, and about 13000 for 2005 are planned.

As for the STBs, I didn't look at the link that was posted, but for $39.99 I'm sure it's not a one-piece, non-adjustable STB. IMHO, the non-adjustable ones are MUCH stiffer than those three-piece gizmos. I had one-piece, non-adjustable front and rear STBs, but the car was way too stiff for street use. It felt like a board going over even the slighest ripples in the pavement. On a smooth track, I'm sure having those STBs would make the car haul ass, with little or no body roll. But on the street, it was too stiff.

Hey Robert, long time, no talk too!
Thanks for the advice on the STB. Haven't received it yet, so I'll let ya know what happens.

The rumor mill also said 2005 will be the end of the Neon as well as the SRT. Dodge is supposed to start building a new vehicle on the Lancer platform with a Hyunda (?) engine. I kinda doubt it will be the new "King of the Street"

Lancer platform with a Hyundai engine...yikes...I suppose the Neon has never really caught on as an econobox car, and sales were disappointing. However, I didn't have any reservations at all about getting my sRT-4 because of the 7/70 warranty, which is darn good on a car with so much performance. And again, for the money, it's one helluva car!

There are lots of mods available on the SRT-4s now, with money being the limiting factor! The one mod I saw that looks awesome is the big turbo kit, costs something like $2400. But you get the bigger turbo, intercooler, injectors, ECM, all the other assorted parts (wastegate, BOV, etc). Result is over 300hp, and something like 330 ft-lbs of torque. Sheesh, that car will flat out rip from a rolling start with a mod like that!

But I'll have to wait for a rich relative to pass away or win the lottery before I drop that kind of money into my SRT-4. I gotta plan a few years down the road, and the wife wants to put the kids into an all-girls private high school, at close to $6K a year. Ouch, that'll certainly put a major dent in the funds I'll have available for any mods to the SRT or my motorcycle!

Anyway, keep the rubber side down, and don't let temptation get the better of you!

:)
Yo Robert,

Did you see where the stage 2 is now available for about $1400/$1500? Figures look pretty impressive! I'm starting to clip coupons to save up for mine!

Dustyloins -

Save a little bit more and get the big turbo kit (Rage?) for $2400. You'll have one CRAZY quick SRT-4 then. If you're going to void your warranty anyway (which I believe any of the Mopar Stage kits will do), might as well go for the brass ring with the big turbo kit!

Mine is plenty fast with the few mods I've done to it already (rims, ram air/cold air hose, Uni filter, front and rear STBs, Eibach springs, rear end link kit). When I get home from this TDY, the first thing I'll put on is the Mopar BOV. Next will be the cross-drilled brake rotors (have to exchange the drilled/slotted ones they sent me instead). I've been able to keep the miles pretty low on my car since I got it, and want it to last a good long time. Doubtful I'll pass it on to one of my kids to drive in high school, but I don't see any reason why it can't still be on the road 100K miles or 10 years from now!

:)

After paying all those bucks for the extended warranty, I'm not going to blow it all for Stage 1 and 10 more HP...I can get 5 more with a K&N filter alone. I'm going to the dealer tomorrow morning for my first oil change and probably have a BOV installed. I've got the MSD wires to put on after that as well as the K&N air filter and a WPx
front STB. Dollar total for mods: < $250, not too bad at all.

Be Safe Buddy & God Bless the U.S.A.:D

I've got a Mopar BOV waiting for me when I get home. I'll probably install it myself the next day after I get back from this TDY. Been reading up on that installation process, and if you have the right tools, knowledge, and patience, as with other things, the installation should go pretty smooth.

If the dealer installs yours, make sure they tighten back up the oil line to the turbo. I read in another forum where a dealer installed a Mopar BOV, and didn't tighten up the oil line, which caused an engine fire and total loss of the car.

I'm anxious to get mine on, and hope the "psssshhhh" sound doesn't get too annoying after a while. I drove a guy's 2004 that had the Stage 1 ECU and BOV, and it drove noticeably different from mine. With the ECU, it seemed to pull harder from mid-range to redline than mine, and that "pssshhhh" sound when I changed gears had me grinning like the proverbial Cheshire cat! But it would be a sure cause for cops to pull someone over, 'cuz there's not another car out there with that kind of sound!

Enjoy, and hope all goes well at your dealer...

Got back a few minutes ago from the Dodge dealer and a visit the clinic on base to refill some meds...Everything at the dealer went smooth, I was in and out in about 30 minutes. They changed the oil and inspected a few things, no problems noted. I was surprised everything was free. I didn't realize the first year's oil changes and adjustments were free of charge because of the service contract/extended warranty I bought when I got the car. I played it safe though, I took my own oil (Mobile 1, 10W-30) and had them put it in instead of the dealer's bulk oil. That my be overkill, but mistakes do happen. No luck on the BOV though. The parts department has them backordered. I may just get one via the internet, instead. They DO sound pretty cool.

Later:)

Hey guys, long time no talk. Been on a break from all the shinanigans of GTP (mostly from the younger people).

I sold my 12 second SRT4 for a 1988 Mustang LX 5.0. Though there are things of the SRT4 I like better, Im more comfortable with this car atm.

I bought a '87 Mustang GT back in late '86 and enjoyed the heck out of it for many years. It was black and had louvers on the rear window.

The Mustang felt like a bigger car on the road than the SRT-4 does. My SRT-4 handles like it's on rails which can upset people who are used to a more "relaxed" driving style. If had to take a trip cross-crounty I'd choose the Mustang (I did, twice). For short trips or running around the neighborhood, I'm happy with my SRT-4.:P
