Yes, Dodge wants do another horror. Bring back the Challenger for 2009.
CNN Money Autos
NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - It's starting to look like the muscle car wars of the late 1960s are coming back for real. Following this year's introduction of the Dodge Charger, the next muscle car name to be resurrected will be the Dodge Challenger, according to a report in the industry weekly Automotive News.

The Challenger will be based on the same platform as the Charger, which shares its mechanical underpinnings with the Chrysler 300 and the Dodge Magnum wagon, according to the report. The newspaper cites industry sources including outside analysts familiar with the development program.

No-one with Chrysler Group, the division of DaimlerChrysler responsible for Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep vehicles. would talk about the program, Automotive News said.

Unlike the Charger, the Challenger will be a two-door car, according to the report. That would put it in direct competition with the recently redesigned Ford Mustang and the Pontiac GTO. The current Charger has four doors.

Like the Charger, 300 and Magnum, the Challenger will be available with an optional V8 "Hemi" engine, Automotive News said.

When it was originally introduced for the 1970 model year, the Challenger was a small "Pony Car" competitor to the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro.

The car is scheduled to be introduced in 2009, Automotive News said. The report said the company expects to sell 60,000 to 70,000 Challengers a year
Either their guys who are in charge of coming with cars found a way to make some money with little work, or they have no imagination.

Better not screw it up Dodge.

It's going to be, and it'll have dodge's bad ass fascia on it.
It'll be a 2 door half azz retro charger....

And it'll have a hemi!

oh yeah

Well, at least we're finally getting the hemi powered, rear wheel drive coupe that we should have got when the Charger was brought out. The Challenger had better have a 6 speed manual available...

Don't care at all.

"They're going to ruin it"? How are they going to ruin the memory of a car from the 1960s? All they're doing is borrowing the name. I still don't get why people care so much about heritage and long-running names in the auto industry. Get over it.

I don't care what they call it, but it will more then likely be ugly. The Charger is really ugly, I don't know why they didn't make it closer to the concept. Oh well I'll be curious to see the concept version of the Challenger.

Yeah, the Charger Concept from a few years back would have actually been perfect to make.

Then they could have made this 4-door Charger by the names of something else.
I like the car, the SRT model looks great, just imo, the name doesn't fit.

At least the Challenger will be 2-door and face the Mustang and GTO.

Because that name gives them potential to build another car that shares some styling cues with the good looking original, or performs along the same lines. If Dodge were to be silly enough to bring back the Charger, for example, and make it a stumpy looking 4 door, this would mean that there would be no chance of them bringing back a proper looking one.

Exactly. What if it was the other way around, like Toyota bringing back Celica and calling it Camry. :D

It's still just a name... just because they use the name of a car from the 1960s doesn't mean they're trampling on everything that car meant in the 1960s. All they're doing is reviving the name. Don't get all worked up.

And lemme get this straight - you guys all pissed and moaned because they called a 4-door a Charger. And now that they want to call a 2-door a Challenger, you're still pissing and moaning? Good grief.

And speaking as a person who was born in 1965 - 15 years at least earlier than most of the people screaming the hardest about "that's not a Charger" - I'm hear to tell you a resounding "so what?" I was around when those cars were new. The new Charger is a perfect update of the old Charger: big, heavy, badass looking, V8, rear wheel drive. Back doors? So what.

Try having your car renamed from this:

Been there, done that. I don't have any sympathy with people who scream about the new GTO, either. The original GTO was something you wouldn't turn your head at unless you knew what it was... just like the new one. The '04 GTO is a lot better and more agressive looking than the '64 ever was.

And understand - I have a '67 Le Mans convertible in my garage that I've owned since it was new! My sister has a '68 GTO convertible. My father had a '72 Grandville convertible. I know and love classic cars, and there's nothing to be that upset about.

Wow - a Korean-built LeMans sighting. I'll never understand why the hell the American companies begged Daewoo to build cars for them in the 1980s and early 1990s. GM did it, and Ford did too - twice! Then Daewoo entered the market and, within four years, went completely belly-up.

Here's one: as far as I know, the vehicle was sold as the Daewoo LeMans in Korea, too. :D

I am sure if they did a retro job half the people would be moaning about it, if they did something a little different the other half would complain that it wasn't true to the originals spirit.

I did not know that, but it's starting to make a lot of sense.

One thing I've found about people on forums regarding cars is that they will, invariably, without fail, under ALL circumstances, complain. No matter what car it is, they find a way - the 7-series is too ugly, the GTO is too boring. The Charger has four doors so automatically it's ****, the Mustang's live rear axles automatically makes it crap, the Mercedes SLR is ugly so it's stupid. A car could be perfect in every single vein, but if it has one bad quality - usually looks - every single person on these forums writes it off. I used to argue about this, but it's not even worth it anymore. The complaining is constant and unending, and it's old. It's not even worth discussing.

The only car I've never heard anyone bash is the Mazda 6, though I can recall hearing poeple upset about the chrome "milk mustache" over the grille. I remember wanting to slap those people across the face. There's a few other favorites - Nissan 350Z, for instance - but everything draws criticism. I realise you can't please everyone, but those who don't have something factual to say should shut up.

Except you. :P

I don't understand all the moaning – Dodge is on a roll right now, and I definitely look forward to the Challenger. I mean, think about it: A wagon, 4-door, and 2-door, which means they've covered all the bases, and all of them are/will be available with a V8 and in SRT trim. Can you imagine a car company doing that 10 years ago? These are great times for car enthusiasts (in fact, it has me a little worried that by the time I can buy a new car myself, the market might go into a '70s-style drought).

I'll give you the Caprice/Camaro, but the Japanese boys didn't have V8s (which you conveniently clipped out of my quote :P).

Speaking of Dodge (oops, back on-topic), when's the Caliber supposed to come out?
Production of the Caliber begins in December, which means it'll start reaching dealers in January or February 2006. Meanwhile, production of the Jeep Compass, its Jeep twin, will begin the following June, so models will hit dealers in July or August 2006.

I'm excited! :D

I've looked all over for the picture of the Accord with the 350 in it but I'm coming up short, you got it M5?
