Does anybody know when and who discovered the relationships (As in the Mathematical equations) behind gears in mechanisms? (such as the relationship between diameter, teeth size and angular velocity). I have an assignment to do, but it's just a basic experiment involving the inertia of gears using the falling weight method. All we have to do is analyse results from a practical experiment and compare them to theoretical results.
But I want to put in my introduction something about the origins of the theory behind gears. Some basic research i've done points to the ancient Greeks and possibly Archimedes, but i've yet to find any online resource or journal that says where the equations originate, and all of the books that i've looked at through the university library website just list the equations without a thought for the origin, which is quite odd considering for example, you rarely see E=mc^2 without a mention of Einstein, and not to forget equations derived from Newton's laws (I know they're a lot more recent, but the source should always be referenced even if it's just when it was first published).
I don't need to include it, I just think it will look good. If anybody knows where they originate it would be very helpful![Smile :) :)](/wp-content/themes/gtp16/images/smilies/smile.svg?v=3)
