Does GT5 on PS3 support modern wheels such as the Fanatec GT DD Pro?

I'm guessing the answer is no and that the GT DD Pro needs to be in compatibility mode but even then I am wondering if this might work?

Its been years since I played GT5 and back then I used a now defunct Logitech wheel. At the time I never had a nice cockpit or wheel and I was wondering if it was even possible to play GT5 with a modern set up? Like I am not even sure if a GT DD Pro would even connect to a PS3, it's been that long....

Yeah, you’re spot on. GT5 on PS3 doesn’t really play nice with modern wheels like the Fanatec GT DD Pro. I used to have a Logitech wheel back in the day, and even then, it was a bit of a struggle to get everything set up. I doubt you’d be able to connect the GT DD Pro without some serious workarounds, and even then, it probably wouldn’t feel great. If you want to use a nice setup, it might be worth looking into the newer Gran Turismo titles on PS4 or PS5; they support modern gear way better!

Oh I have those. I was just thinking it might be fun to look at GT5 again, particularly for when having an online connection is not feasible.
 
You can use a DriveHub, there's a thread about it. Last time I checked, you need to downgrade its firmware to 2.03 to make it work with PS3. And here were my thoughts on how it feels:
Just out of curiosity, I revisited GT5 today. With the help of Drive Hub, I could use DD Pro to play it, the hub disguises the base as a G27. It's so much worse than I remembered, the FFB is so dull that there was no detail even when cornering, only a constant spring effect, which makes feeling the grip very challenging. Oversteer happens without any sign, and the wheel won't feel any lighter until the car has completely spun. Obtaining license test gold medals is significantly harder than in GT Sport and GT7, I had to rely on trial and error. Only dirt roads and some curbs create spikes in the FFB signal. There of course are games out there with better FFB like ACC, but the GT series has come a long way for sure.
Another thing I noticed was the ABS in GT5 was so aggressive that it was almost impossible to gold the International C braking test with ABS on, I had to turn ABS from 1 to OFF and try to do threshold braking to achieve the gold medal time. In GT7 I don't think I ever needed to do that, ABS on low feels good enough.
However, GT6 feels quite a lot better on the wheel, the FFB makes more sense, I golded quite a few events that I wasn't able to with G27 back in the day and platinumed the game (mostly because I've learned a lot more since then).
