Does the DD Extreme need to be updated if its played on PS5?

I just bought one and can't change the settings on the wheel, can't even get out
of settings mode to where it shows the speedometer. It also has a hard time
connecting when I push the PS button. I've checked the forums and YouTube
videos but couldn't find any answers to those problems. I had a DD Pro that
I never updated and it worked fine, and right now my PC is down so I can't
even try it.

I had heard you only need the update for use on a PC, so is that true?

No, it's not true. Read the changelog file that fanatec supplies to see what they changed AND why they changed things.
Sometimes new firmware fixes some "edge case" bugs, sometimes there are changes that improve compatibility with certain software (including games on consoles), or add support for new/upcoming hardware.

Firmware 455 is the best I had no problem since I got the wheel 6 months ago, with new firmwares (last is 464) there are several erratic problems like miss shifts..that can be see in Fanatec software forum..
