Does your GPU really affect...

I agree buy a AMD 64 CPU with a PCI Express Motherboard. Or get one of the new ATi AMD 64bit Motherboards, which have PCI Express and Intergrated 9600XT.

So if you don't have the money after new CPU and motherboard, then you can use the 9600XT for a cople months or way longer. Then when you have the money buy a new PCI Express Graphics Card mate.

You guys don't get it.

My MX 4 is INTEGRATED. It isnt' a seperable card...

MachOne
... but I'm left with a dirt-poor NVidia GeForce 4 MX video card.

👎

Yeah i wonder where we all got the crazy idea you had a video card :grumpy:

Your computer is extinct with only the capabilities of a PCI graphics card. Seriously, you need to consider upgrading all of it.

I know my MOBO is PCI because the slots are white...not brown. AGP = Brown. PCI= White.

BTW:

I bought my PC at Best Buy. It is an eMachine. Got it last year. Not that old.

AMD Athlon 2205 MHz
512 MB of RAM
260 GB HDD
NVidia GeForce MX 4 Integrated GPU
NVidia nForce 2 chipset.
nForce 2 chipset does not support any form of PCI-E. Are you sure you have no AGP slot? If you don't you might as well put your money towards a new mobo, CPU, and GPU, since PCI graphics cards are rubbish this day and age. I doubt they could even play Battlefield 2 or Quake 4 and DEFINATELY not F.E.A.R.!

With a better graphics card, he should play these games no problem, at pretty nice settings.

Just overclock the CPU i guess. Ram is no problem upgrading either, another 512mb or more wont hurt.

I'm really only looking to play games like CS:Source, CS:Condition Zero, and possibly Half Life 2 on a low-medium setting.

If I go big time, I'll get big time.

But anyways,....this is it guys....please tell me I magically have PCI-E :D

The brown slot there is an AGP slot ... Although it looks a bit ... weird ... like it doesn't have an opening in the case for the outputs/inputs ... Maybe it's just the angle of the photo ...

PCI-E is only available on the nForce 4 chipset (for AMD's at least).

Sorry, you have AGP, not PCI-E.

Yes, you can do stuff with AGP. But is it AGP 2/4 or AGP 4/8? Also .. there doesn't look to be any opening in the back of the case for the AGP slot, so that will be an issue.

I'm sure he could work around that

Actually, if you count the amount of openings in the back you'll notice there's 4 of them. There's 3 PCI slots and 1 AGP slot. The top opening is for the AGP card, its just the angle of the image.

D'oh.

I counted four PCI slots and one AGP slot. :embarrassed:

I am the weakest link, goodbye!

Use everest home edition to see what kind of AGP slot it is.

Well ****

The AGP slot has NO opening. And using a saw isn't hardly an option, unles I want to cut my ethernet port out (and numerous other appliances i need) to make an opening.

Edit: After investigation closer, yes the opening is there, but it's going to be a living HELL getting a card to fit in there without having to completely rearrange my internals.

Yeah, that is a AGP slot. I would honestly go with the 6600GT, but i dont know if would be better then the 6800. With this graphics card, you should have medium or higher setting for those games. Just make sure you computer is nice and clean, no viruses, no spy ware, and so on.

Guys, thanks for the tremendous help. You may have saved me over $200, loss of patience, and hassle with tech support :D.

Now all I need is to know which of those GPUs you think (or suggest a different one, WITH LINK) would work best. I won't spend any more than what the 6600GT costs in the link I provided.

You probably do have a slot for the AGP, it's always seems like the opening is a slow too low. You may want to test it with another card just to make sure. Does anyone know where to find that 6800 le? It doesn't seem to be on newegg anymore.

I've already confirmed it's AGP. Don't worry, I have all of this established.

All I need are reccomendations now :)

Remember, no more than approx. $170 (the 6600 is $148 with mail in rebate!)

What type of video card you should get depends on what type of AGP slot you have. Run that program that Event posted a while back.

AGP 4x/8x will not work properly on an AGP 2x/4x board IIRC.

Jmac279
I can't think of any nForce2 boards that aren't AGP 8x ...
Retail companies like eMachines and HP always seem to find away to save money and gyp the customer.

Oh, I must have missed the part where he mentioned what type of mobo he had. :indiff:

Yeah and they do a damn good job at it too.

Well, you don't have much choice but the 6600GT then. It'd be hard to find a decent 6800 for the price of a 6600...

The one I posted is cheaper than the 6600 (i'll have to check on rebates though).

I'm thinking of going 6600GT, since the 6800 doesn't seem to be much of an upgrade for what i'll be doing with it.
