I want to register a domain that is currently unavailable. It's status is REDEMPTION PERIOD. Here is what the whois database says about it. I can't tell if it may be coming available or not. Can anyone else tell?

Status: REDEMPTIONPERIOD
Updated Date: 28-jul-2003
Creation Date: 20-jun-2001
Expiration Date: 20-jun-2003

Nobody is using it now. I hate it when domains are registered and not used. And it's my name to boot! The dot com version is taken and being used by a realtor in Texas but this one, dot net, is not and I wish people wouldn't do that.

Anyway, any help is appreciated.

Hmm.. Redemption period = Time to redeem the domain and pay for it. It'll probably be available (hopefully) by the end of the year if noone pays for it.

I just got this email response from the registrar:

"A Registrar will usually hold the domain for 45 days to give the registrant a chance to renew. After that time, they release the domain to the registry. When a registrar releases a domain, the domain's registry will hold the domain registration in a 30 day 'Redemption Period'. During this period the registrant may renew the domain. If after the 75 days, the domain is not renewed, then the domain will go public."

I think it's BS that they dick around like that. If you don't renew on time it should go public immediately. What gets me is no-one is even using it and it's my name. Frosts my ass I tells ya!

I just want to know if it's worth it for me to spend 18.00 to have it watched by my registrar so if it does go public I'll have the best chance of getting it. I guess that email doesn't really answer my question.

Well I'm hoping it will be. But whoever is sitting on it gets all this extra time to renew it after they let it expire.
